met office warnings For tomorrow for Scotland and NW England, extending to Yorkshire. NW Scotlant in particular looks awful with blizzard conditions.

I'm not quite sure about the warnings for England, I'm going to be really interested to see how they pan out. Tuesday scattered sleet and snow showers for many.

The forecasts I've seen on News24 this afternoon have been reflecting that forecasters are struggling with where/how much snow will fall over our way ~ methinks I'll be doing a lot of 'lamp-post watching' tomorrow evening/night!
A poster on met-monkey mentioned Wednesday as another possible 'snow day' too.

Fatsatsuma, even if the air temp close to the ground isn't cold enough, if the rest of the layers of air that the snow goes through is it can often stay as snow. How long it lasts on the ground for is another matter, but it takes heat to mel the snow and so the ground cools as more and more snow hits it and melts. Eventually, hopefully it can then stay for a bit. Once you get a decent layer of snow on the ground it also cools the air above it.

We may get some evaporative cooling into play too, where if precipitation falls through a drier layer of air, even if that air is above zero, as the precip evaporates it takes heat out of the air and cools it down.

Thanks OYBBK that's a very helpful explanation.

MrsAFlowerpot · 09/02/2013 23:24

OYBBK the forecast seems to be changing hourly for both Herts and London. From heavy snow to light snow to sleet to rain - and back again!!

What do you think will happen oh weather guru?

reastie · 10/02/2013 05:47

OYBBK when you mean kent is positioned well do you mean to get lots of snow or to escape the snow?!

TobyLerone · 10/02/2013 07:40

If I know OYBBK, she'll have meant that Kent is going to get bucketloads of it!

What time? I haven't panic-bought anything!

leesmum · 10/02/2013 08:07

Raining here in Nth Manchester, and looks like rain is going to win over snow for us today.....not fair [sulking]

TobyLerone · 10/02/2013 08:11

Birds are singing here and it doesn't sound like the road outside is wet (still in bed and cba to get up). Going to watch DS's rugby match this morning, so I hope it's not too cold. Then got to take DD's friend home, right out in the middle of nowhere. THEN the blizzards can begin :o

2gorgeousboys · 10/02/2013 08:13

Raining here in North Yorkshire too Sad. I woke up this morning hoping for lots of snow but nothing.

Suppose I better go and organise rugby kit Sad

Nat38 · 10/02/2013 08:20

TobyLerone · 10/02/2013 08:32

Perfect! See you on the big hills with the sledges on our snow day tomorrow Wink

DamnDeDoubtance · 10/02/2013 08:32

Hopeful for Kent now though sometimes it seems to miss is as we are very near the coast in the east of the county.

The ground looks quite dry out there which bodes well.

I'm gonna have a look at the radar, see what's afoot.

DamnDeDoubtance · 10/02/2013 08:37

Whatever it is it's getting closer.

TobyLerone · 10/02/2013 08:49

Really? Pleasebesnowpleasebesnowpleasebesnow!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2013 08:53

Nat- that was always expected til later. Don't lose hope!

latest NAE once again bringing snow further south than the met office warnings. A lot of people will have to wait until this evening/night before they see snow (if they get any)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2013 08:56

2gorgeous, I think later for you too. It seems to be taking longer to turn to snow in your area than the models were showing, but I think it will happen by this evening. (No guarantees though, it's already misbehaving)

OP posts:
2gorgeousboys · 10/02/2013 08:58

Snowing here now Grin but it's too wet to settle.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2013 09:05

Kent looks like this evening.
To be honest the situation is so utterly marginal that the best thing for people to do is look out of the window and see what is happening. All sorts of things are going to make a difference today, including even small changes in elevation. I've still not given up hope for my area, it is possible we may get lots, or none. I know that most of the day will be rain though.
