Snow watch!!!!

well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

I have given up with net weather, sticking to met office and the beeb.

Virgil · 15/01/2013 10:57

We have a good four inches in the garden here in notts and the roads are lethal. I skidded in my four wheel drive. Skies quite clear though so doesn't look like a top up is coming yet.

snowflakehellokitty · 15/01/2013 10:58

Icy as all hell here and the odd light flurry

LeChatRouge · 15/01/2013 11:56

We still are in beautiful bright sunshine, and not one flake. My DH says we can drive somewhere where they have snow on Sat to have some fun! Bless him.

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 12:04

Hello Kitten.

Hope you're well.

I was watching the bbc weather last night and also something on line, also the bbc. There seems to be a 'battle' between the warm air from the Atlantic meeting the cold air that's currently sitting over most of the uk. The bbc says the cold is set to continue.

My accuweather app on my phone is saying that we will have some snow on Friday and Sunday but the temp on Sunday is showing as a high of +7 and a low of +3. That doesn't sound quite right to me, so should I be preparing myself for another major let down in terms of snow? Is that it for us in the Kingston upon Thames area ? We had some snow yesterday but it was gone by about 11am ish and then it was wet with rain and some sleet.

Thanks so much, again. :)

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 13:39

Just watched the bbc weather and it looks like Friday is going to be a potentially good one for anyone in the southwest and Wales. I've never seen that much snow on a forecast before.

The met office have also issued weather warnings for the area.

Really hoping we see something in the London area. I can't link to the report at the moment but it does look interesting, very interesting!!

mankyscotslass · 15/01/2013 13:49

We had very light snow flurries on and off all morning, but it's glorious sunshine here now - am hoping that Friday may mean proper snow for us here, the kids are desperate for it.

DamnDeDoubtance · 15/01/2013 14:45

OMG! just watched bbc forecast and they are now saying persistant snow for east kent tomorrow afternoon.

Please please please, wouod be marvelous! Grin

The forecast seems to change by the hour.

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 15/01/2013 15:12

Started heavy again here when we have no more forecast now, thought it was starting to melt too.

wewereherefirst · 15/01/2013 15:14

Not even had a flake here in south Devon. Is there any hope for us?!

leesmum · 15/01/2013 15:33

Manky are u in Manchester too? I didn't know we were getting snow on Fri Grin

mankyscotslass · 15/01/2013 15:46

I am. Grin

Possibly Friday/Saturday I think!

leesmum · 15/01/2013 15:49

Goody, I'm off this weekend for mine and Ds2 birthdays Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2013 16:05

Ok, a summary for the next few days (bearing in mind how precarious some of these snow situations are and that we tend to notice the presence/absence of a snow shower much more than we do with the equivalent in drizzle)

Wednesday: Light snow showers possible down the eastern coast. It is possible that these may become persistent in nature, especially for parts of Kent and coastal East Anglia.

Thursday: Similar but also snow possible for much of Scotland away from western coasts. Perhaps some for northern England too.

Friday: Where it gets tricky! A weather front moves in from the west. Really tricky to forecast exactly who will get how much snow. Dew points (as predicted by gfs) are a bit marginal in the far south west and so there may be rain. But in general plenty of snow potential for the SW, west Midlands and Wales. As it moves further east it will bring either snow showers or perhaps some more persistent snow for a time. Note that at the moment the Met office is going for a more marginal situation for those in the south.

Saturday: The remnants of the front exit the UK, so some snow showers in the east in the morning. Some snow perhaps lingering in northern Britain through the afternoon.

Sunday (getting into very dodgy forecasting territory!) GFS shows another weather front moving in with heavy precipitation - snow for for those north of the Thames valley (approx!) rain for those south.

So, main points to note. Snow potential for eastern coastal counties tomorrow and Thursday. Possibly big snow fest on Friday (note office warnings) for either some or many and continuing into Saturday.

I think that covers about everyone? Grin

Hello DamnDeDoubtance, wow that sounds cool. I did see that there was snow on the tip of Kent. Did it say it was coming further in towards London?

The forecasts are still all over the place.

Can't wait for Kitten to fill us in on what is the most likely scenario.

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 16:09

And there you are kitten. Cross posted with you sorry.

Lees mum, happy birthday to you and our DS2!

wewereherefirst · 15/01/2013 16:11

OYBBK you're a diamond! Thank you

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2013 16:11

It took me forever to create that summary! Sometimes the weather is easy to say 'its going to blah blah and then blah blah' but for snow there are so many different charts to look at!

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 16:17

Oh bottom!!!

Looks like we'll be missing out again. I am in serious danger of throwing all my toys out of the pram. < goes off mumbling to find chocolate and then remembers I'm on a new way of eating>

For those of you that get some, enjoy!!!! Grin

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 16:26

Thank you Kitten. How is it going to be in your neck of the woods? :)

mankyscotslass · 15/01/2013 16:35

Thanks for the report OYBBK. Thanks
