well, it looks like winter finally might be arriving!

First indications for snow are for this coming saturday as a low pressure draws in cold air . The met office arent really going for it at the moment, but the potential is certainly there. At the moment I'd say the biggest risk is for the midlands and central England.

After that there seems to be a cold few days but then the models start to disagree. GFS shows a positive snow fest for the 24th! masses of snow, but its a long way off and until we get much closer who knows what really will happen.

Been snowing in East Yorkshire for about two hours! Early finish from school for us Grin

mumat39 · 14/01/2013 14:03

Grauple, not grapple. Oops! Grin

mumat39 · 14/01/2013 14:05

So, DamnDeDoubtance, is there a key to what the colours mean? Is rain the yellows orange stuff and blue, snow?

Thankyou.

StillSlightlyCrumpled · 14/01/2013 14:11

Thankyou OYBBK. Mild & wet is fine by me! Grin X

DamnDeDoubtance · 14/01/2013 14:19

It doesn`t tel you what type of precip it is, just where it is and how heavy.

Light blue is light and the yellows are heavy, pinks and reds are downpours.

The key is at the bottom of the chart.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 14:23

SSW's tend to happen every other year and I think its an emerging area tbh.
Just like the jet stream meanders around and is sometimes strong and sometimes weak so is the polar jet. sometimes it becomes so weak that it actually reverses in direction. The actual explanation of the cause of this is really complex!

The heating is caused by the collapse of stratosphere into the the polar region and as it descends it warms (called adiabatic compression). This whole process of flow reversal etc disrupts things and instead of westerlies we end up with easterlies which brings us the cold weather.

However, not all SSW events bring us cold weather and actually so far I reckon this one has been rather pathetic in its influence on us!

DamnDeDoubtance thanks for that, I'm sure I looked for the key but am on ipad so maybe i didn't school down enough. Thanks.

kitten, it's all really interesting. I can't say I understand it all, but it's better than watching the telly on -most- nights when there's nothing on. Thanks for the explanation again. :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 14:37

Its the explaining of stuff that really makes sure that I understand it, so you are doing me a favour by asking questions!

Hmm, settling well here now :( Am sending everyone home from work!

mankyscotslass · 14/01/2013 14:47

Very grey here now and bitter cold.

Maybe we will get some decent white stuff at the end of the month? Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 15:07

Passed the grass test then. Grin

Dawndonna · 14/01/2013 17:38

Been steady for an hour now, in North Suffolk. Strangely, doesn't appear to be settling.

Molepom · 14/01/2013 17:44

More please!
There hasnt been enough for a snow day but did manage to get a couple of hours sledging, snowman building and the local neighbourhood snowball fight in before tea.

DiamondDoris · 14/01/2013 18:23

OYBBK - when you say far SE for snow Tues early am, could that include Tunbridge Wells? We're on the Sussex border. Sorry for all the questions! Thanks, worried of Tunbridge Wells Smile

Dawndonna · 14/01/2013 19:13

Settling. Got half an inch. Fully expect to be snowed in by morning.

StairsInTheNight · 14/01/2013 19:28

feeling very sad and disillusioned about the sleet. Expect weekend will be the same. Sad not fair. Sad

pigsinmud · 14/01/2013 19:29

Got all excited as bbc said heavy snow now in my village. Looked out the window....heavy rain! The forecast has changed from no snow to snow for me, but no such luck yet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2013 19:30

amber warnings extended further south (which reflects the continued snow risk I talked about earlier) I think the met office must be struggling though as theres no detail on those warnings about timings.

Some snow risk right down to the se over night as the precipitation wraps around the low. Also EA, Lincolnshire and for a time yorkshire. Tomorrow snow showers fizzling out. Friday and Saturday are the next days to watch.
