Just for fun Xmas Smile

GFS had Christmas Day in sight now. Of course it's massively a long way off in forecast terms and it can't even make its mind up what is going to happen on Friday yet!

disclaimer: am only an amateur and this is my hobby. Please don't rely on it for any crucial decisions - I don't want you to get into pickles cos I got it wrong!

And now for the forecast......

Thanks for your forecasts, Kitten.

Any sign of cooling down in the SE this year?

SingingTunelessly · 24/12/2012 22:31

Happy Christmas Kitten! Thank you for your far more accurate than Met Office/BBC reports. Honestly how do they get it so wrong so often? Or this is just where I am? Xmas Grin and Grrr.

Please make it stop raining though. Xmas Sad

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 25/12/2012 07:51

Singingtunelessely, you are very kind! However I am very Blush as I had no idea it was going to thunder through the night!

happy Christmas everyone!!!!!

No cool down showing but Friday night looks concerning in terms of severe gales, perhaps storm force winds, at the moment looking to affect Scotland the most. Models all develop the storm but the degree to which it depends and the position varies.

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2012 09:27

Not looking so concentrated I don't think this morning. Instead widespread gales across the UK starting Friday afternoon and going through into Saturday. Gusts of up to 60 mph in exposed parts.
I'm afraid the rain keeps coming though. Some parts of central England and northern Wales may have a fairly dry pleasant day tomorrow.

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 27/12/2012 21:22

wind warnings for nw scotland and of course more rain warnings.....

headfairy · 27/12/2012 21:26

OMG, how much longer can this go on? The rain just doesn't drain away now. All the drains are full, it just sits on the road. There's one road near to us that has been permenantly flooded for the past three weeks. I feel really sorry for those poor residents who have to walk through two foot of water to get to their houses every day. Luckily the houses are raised so I don't think they're flooded.

CheeryCherry · 27/12/2012 21:27

Love your reports! Do you think the UK will get the tail end of America's snowstorm?

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 27/12/2012 21:35

Cheery, sadly anything that comes over the Atlantic will just be more rain.
There does happily look like there will be some respite from the rain next week for the south, with the rain moving north for a bit, to even clear much of scotland eventually. Hooray! But.... It doesn't look set to last so make the most of it.

wind warnings up to amber

Some interest in NYEve weather. Looking very wet, but the cold front could be a rather active squally one (with potential for thunderstorms etc)

TheSkiingGardener · 28/12/2012 19:04

Wet, wet and more wet! With wind thrown in. Thanks OYBBK, will take extra care driving, it doesn't sound nice

SingingTunelessly · 28/12/2012 22:40

Kitten, I can't get that link to load. Please, please, please tell me there's no more rain for central England? I know that compared to the poor South West, in particular, we really can't complain but ENOUGH IS A ENOUGH. Xmas Angry. The ground is sodden here. Ooh, think I might have complained before about the power outage. boring myself- now-- Sad

Xmas Grin. Apologies for self pity trying to see the light hearted side of NO light or heating looming.

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 29/12/2012 11:01

Seems there are snow warnings out for a good part of Scotland. Missed that one! Sorry folks!

Singingtunlessly, it should get better from Tuesday for a few days. Perhaps lasting into the weekend.

Wallace · 29/12/2012 11:16

Thanks. I wonder if it will get cold enough. Apparently it was 10 degrees in the night. No wonder I was sweating!

oricella · 29/12/2012 21:35

there was a wee sprinkling on Slochd as we passed just now... blooming gales and bucketing down further west plenty of Apres Ski'ers in the winking owl though

Wallace · 30/12/2012 07:40

oricella - you should have waved as you passed! Wink

Been snowing here but not settling.

Wallace · 30/12/2012 08:51

Now it is little I can see we do have a wee skiff of snow - literally just flakes settled.

It has just started snowing properly.

Wallace · 30/12/2012 08:51

light not little!

GentleOtter · 30/12/2012 10:08

There was a smattering of snow here just before Christmas which melted but it is snowing heavily and lying on the ground. Very stormy here last night, lots of flooding and very icy roads. Mind how you go if you are travelling on the A9 or on some of the rural back roads.

oricella · 30/12/2012 10:28

Waves to Wallace

We travelled just ahead of the bad weather... A9 certainly doesn't look like much fun today; we now have 3 flakes on the roof and sleet throws another log onto the fire

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 30/12/2012 10:52

Well, tomorrow looks like a rather nasty day, strong winds, especially in the far SE with gusts to around 60mph. A cold front goes through and I think there's the possibility of squalls around it and perhaps some thunderstorms too. Lots and lots of heavy rain.

Then New Year's Day it will be as though someone switched the Atlantic off. Much colder, dry for most and a lovely winters day. After that it gets much milder again and, thank goodness drier for at least a time, more so in the south with the nw. In particular not being so lucky. (Note drier, not dry)

OP posts:
GloriaSnow · 30/12/2012 13:24

Looking at the forecast on News24, I think the cold front is supposed to clear quite a lot of the country during the day/evening. It might still hang on in the SE so midnight in London might be quite a wet event.

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 30/12/2012 14:20

Sounds like a fair assessment :)

OP posts:
fatsatsuma · 30/12/2012 17:42

Kitten, can you see any sign of a cool down in January? The Met Office long range forecast is very non-commital, but seems to hint at the possibility of it getting towards the end of the month.

Thanks for your stirling work on the MN weather desk Xmas Grin

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel · 30/12/2012 17:49

Managed to get out in the garden this afternoon and it's absolutely sodden Shock
I mean, I know it's been raining almost non stop forever, but the shed has a moat, my 2 veg patches are literally underwater. We've been here 8 years or so and I've not seen the ground this saturated before.
What I'd really like is a cold/dry spell or proper snow.
Pretty please! Xmas Smile
(You do do requests, don't you OYBBK Wink)
