Just for fun Xmas Smile

GFS had Christmas Day in sight now. Of course it's massively a long way off in forecast terms and it can't even make its mind up what is going to happen on Friday yet!

disclaimer: am only an amateur and this is my hobby. Please don't rely on it for any crucial decisions - I don't want you to get into pickles cos I got it wrong!

And now for the forecast......

ooh a snowy new year would be nice.

tak1ngchances · 20/12/2012 19:28

I am going to a wedding NYE! Hope for the bride's sake that any snow is limited to a pretty, sparkly dusting

headfairy · 20/12/2012 20:47

I was just about to come on here and ask kitten don't we usually have a big freeze after a flood at this time of year?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2012 21:00

It's not a pattern I've noticed headfairy, will be interesting to see what happens.

headfairy · 20/12/2012 21:17

After the most recent bout of flooding someone said a freeze follows a flood, and verily 'twas so (the freeze last month)

Wallace · 20/12/2012 21:22

I've just seen this thread. Will it be a white Christmas up here in the Highlands? I believe it was snowing very heavily up Cairngorm today.

Shakey1500 · 20/12/2012 21:24

Kitten Nothing of any note to add to this thread but just to say, I really enjoy your weather threads and appreciate the time you take Grin

Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas!

peachypips · 20/12/2012 21:32

So worried about rain! Concerned my family won't make it for Christmas. We have been flooded in several times this autumn/winter and I am getting to genuinely hate the rain. And yes, I know some would kill for rain.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2012 22:08

Thank you Shakey :) a very happy Christmas to you too :)

Wallace, I think it is looking quite possible at the moment.

Peachy, I've been watching it on the news. It is really bad once again.

That rain yesterday was quite frightening. Places were floodi g near me that wouldn't usually flood.

I would quite like a big freeze though, enough to kill off the garden bugs that have run rampant this year would be nice.

Wallace · 21/12/2012 07:45

Thank you Xmas Smile

We have pouring rain at the moment, but snow a bit higher up.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 21/12/2012 07:50

Okaydoke. Morning update.

A bit of a mixed bag. Looking at GFS.

in Scotland, particularly northern areas away from coasts a cold day. Cold enough that any showers may well be snow.

England and Wales, showers. The further south you are in general, the more milder. Some places may not see any showers at all and it may feel more like a pleasant early spring day than anything!

Looking at UKMO
Milder than the GFS, but drier and colder. Too warm anywhere for snow really. The difference comes down to the positioning of the low pressure that looks set to dominate.

Looking at ECMWF
Again looking to mild for any showers to be snow.

So onto a brief summary for Christmas travellers.

Today: an English/Scottish divide with rain being mostly confined to north of the border. Quite a pleasant day for some. Rain starts to arrive in the sw around midnight.

Saturday: rain quickly sweeps in across the UK. Expect further road flooding. Some strong winds, perhaps in the NE of Scotland reaching severe gale later in the day.

Sunday: northern half of Scotland seeing rain or showers. Rest of the UK generally drier, but the winds will remain quite strong. Rain begins to arrive in the south that night.

Monday: wet once again in the south, but perhaps not quite as much as we've seen recently. Any strong winds calming down through the day.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the met office warnings page

Will bump occasionally today for travellers :)

headfairy · 21/12/2012 09:24

kitten you are an angel!

I'm supposed to be taking ds to see Father Christmas at Penshurst Place in Kent tomorrow. I know it's going to rain but is there one part of the day when the rain is less likely to be torrential? Would morning or afternoon be better? I would go on Sunday because it looks better, but we have other things already organised.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 21/12/2012 09:56

Headfairy, quite a hard call to make really as it depends on how quickly the front goes through. Either first thing in the morning before it arrives or towards the end of the afternoon as the the back edge goes through.

We have sunshine Xmas Shock

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 21/12/2012 12:17

Tis very nice isn't it :)

OP posts:
headfairy · 21/12/2012 12:53

oh lovely thanks kitten I was thinking of going later in the day so the Christmas lights would be on... so hopefully the front will have swept through by then. The forecast is showing it to be fairly dry on Sunday for us now so they're expecting it to move through quite quickly I guess.

mumat39 · 21/12/2012 18:03

Hi Kitten.

I just linked to the warnings page and Sunday looks the same as Saturday, so does your summary above mean we should be ok to be out and about on Sunday? I think I might be looking at the wrong thing Xmas Confused

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 21/12/2012 18:25

Will have to double check for you as am away from the pc but at the last look Sunday day time should be ok away from Scotland. Check out what time the warnings end for Sunday.

OP posts:
mumat39 · 21/12/2012 18:39

Thanks Kitten. The warning is until 12.00. I didn't know there was text attached to the warnings. We're in SW London btw.

Also, can I just echo what Shakey said above. I love your posts too and appreciate the time you must take updating here.

I've been trying to understand the weather maps but am still clueless so apologies for the silly question.

Xxx

ArielTheBahHumbugMermaid · 21/12/2012 20:43

I am very glad I'm not going anywhere tomorrow, put it that way. How can there be so much rain in the sky?

ArielTheBahHumbugMermaid · 21/12/2012 20:45

Though actually Cornwall's Christmas Day is not looking too bad.

At the moment.......
