Just for fun Xmas Smile

GFS had Christmas Day in sight now. Of course it's massively a long way off in forecast terms and it can't even make its mind up what is going to happen on Friday yet!

disclaimer: am only an amateur and this is my hobby. Please don't rely on it for any crucial decisions - I don't want you to get into pickles cos I got it wrong!

And now for the forecast......

You are very welcome mumat :) and it wasn't a silly question at all.

Morning all. Just a quick update, up against the clock this am.
Well a fine soggy morning we have here!!!! The last of this batch of rain will clear away from the SE in the early hours to leave a dry day in England Wales. Parts of Scotland staying a bit soggy I'm afraid.

Monday the next band of rain moves in from the sw. Not as bad as today thank goodness but there are still met office warnings for the south.

Christmas Day pretty much a fine dry day, maybe one or two showers according to the UKMO but GFS shows more. Also GFS has it a lot colder in Scotland with temps around zero in central areas. Both models are in agreement with it being mild in the south.

Boxing Day perhaps another fine and mild day. Again models disagree about Scotland's temps.

Ok, have a good day all. If travelling today stay safe. Next update tonight.

Thanks kitten. Don't think it's going to get light today either. The ground is so sodden I'm just waiting for the power to click off again

GloriaSnow · 22/12/2012 09:34

We've had 4.9mm of rain in the last 24 hrs, here in Leicester.
Raintoday shows the huge band of rain over the country atm.

ArielTheBahHumbugMermaid · 22/12/2012 10:28

Cheers, Kitten!

GloriaSnow · 22/12/2012 11:29

The metoffice has issued its weather review of the year - am Shock at the rain statistics.

GloriaSnow · 22/12/2012 11:38

Lots of train travel disruption in the SW due to the rain.

mumat39 · 22/12/2012 11:45

Thanks Gloria.

That's really interesting. I love all these stats. I'm surprised at the numer of rain days. It's felt like it's rained alot more than that. Esp. since the drought warnings were issued.

Kitten, thanks again. Looking forward to a dry Christmas Day.

Anyone who is travelling, I hope you all have a safe journey.

Anyone who as been adversely affected by rain, I really hope you're all ok.

Xxx

GloriaSnow · 22/12/2012 11:53

mumat ~ I know what you mean about the amount of rain ~ it does feel like we've had more than that. it's been one very soggy year.

ArielTheBahHumbugMermaid · 22/12/2012 11:56

Age of Aquarius innit?

It's also been incredibly annoyingly inconceivably windy.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 22/12/2012 19:41

Pretty similar picture showing this evening.
Tomorrow better, apart from SCotland where the northern half stays quite wet, with severe gales, perhaps storm force in the NE. However, rain does move into the south in the evening.

Monday, generally a wet day, most especially in the south and south west where there are warnings out.

Christmas day, I'm afraid it looks like there will be some showers around. sorry. Unlikely to be all day though and lots of areas will have reasonable breaks from the rain.

Boxing day, starting off dry and reasonable for most. Rain sodding well looks to move in later. Maybe some snow on high English northern hills as things look to cool down a bit.

Wednesday looking colder in the northern half.

ok, dinner calling.....

Can I just say that in central england where the Met Office say it will be light rain now - NO IT IS PEEING IT DOWN. Xmas Angry

Honestly Kitten you are so much more reliable. How is it that with the wealth of resources the Met Office have open to them they can get it so wrong?!

Anyway, we have power here today so I am grateful for small mercies.

stuffthenonsense · 22/12/2012 23:08

Hi, what news for the Lake District weekend of the 29th? Going away for a 'significant' birthday.... Worth taking a sledge for the children?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2012 07:41

Singingtunelessly, power is good!!!! Nice to appreciate the small things in life!
Stuff, as the models stand, a boat will be far more useful. Saturday itself at the moment looks ok, with heavy rain moving in over night according to GFS. ECMWF shows a similar picture sadly.

Ok, on to the Christmas forecast.....

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2012 07:56

Not a bad day today for England. Rain in the northern half of Britain will gradually pull away to the north through the day leaving an improving picture for those in southern Scotland.

This evening a rain band moves in across the south. It will be very heavy at times over night and although it may ease off for a bit tomorrow it looks like it will come back in strength later in the day. I'm afraid it's only going to add to the flooding problems. Later on tomorrow I'm afraid rain will move in across much of the uk so if you are out and about tomorrow I think the best time of day for most will be in the morning.

Christmas Day a showery day for many. mild too. However that night ice could be a problem further north into Scotland. Take care driving!

Boxing Day, starting off to be a pleasant day really. Sadly rain starts to move in in the evening. Those around the Glasgow area and further north should be aware of the possibility of snow rather than rain, especially away from coasts on higher ground.

I'm not going to be able to a check in quite as much now and over Christmas, but I will make sure I keep updating.

Forgot to mention the high winds in the NE of Scotland, oops!!

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2012 07:59

Likely to stay a bit drizzly in the south today too. Aargh!

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2012 08:15

What a depressing Christmas this has been to forecast weather wise :(
Revolting today. Gloomy and at times wet.
Tomorrow, a bit less gloomy and wet.
boxing day not so bad for a bit. Scotland wet. Then later on everyone wet.
Thursday I reckon the met office will put up more rain warnings in the south.
Ad bloody infinitum!

Been looking ahead at the models to see if it might cool down at all. Ironically gfs shows winter arriving as they go back to school!

Merry Christmas Kitten, thanks somuch for your marvellous forecasting efforts. It has been a rubbish season so far hasn't it? I've been saying to everyone who'll listen that its going to get cold in the new year, 'tis the cyclical nature of these things.

DamnDeDoubtance · 24/12/2012 15:03

Merry Christmas everyone.

Let's hope for lots of snow days in the new year.

It's blowing a hoolie in east kent, really vicious winds.
