Hello
I just wondered if anyone has heard about it being really cold next week with snow showers?
Ooh I do hope so (fingers crossed for a snow day).

Claimedbyme, what makes you say that? Cold start to December with below average temps predicted for at least the first couple of weeks.
I'm not saying you are wrong, just wondering what you are basing your prediction on?

Well, it's the battle of GFS v UKMO!

Both fairly comfy for this week, things cooling down and generally settling down. Some wintry showers later this week for northern hilly areas, esp in the east.

Then Sunday.

GFS has milder air coming in from the west Maybe a bit of a snow battle between cold and warm air. Don't get excited though.

UKMO keeps a cold block, drier air but perhaps some snow in the east. Sadly that's as far as the model goes.

Now ECMWF follows the GFS pattern but does then reintroduce cold air.

Something to ponder. The wettest November on record across the UK was in Nov 2009. We all know what winter 2009-2010 was like!
Don't judge a winter by its November!

Nothing scientific, just feeling I suppose, if we get a bad winter it's usually bad by now, we have only had a few frosty days here and there. I still haven't got the wintery feeling and this is Scotland, we are normally slipping and landing on our bums by now!

Claimed, I think that you will find this link about nov 2009 in Scotland interesting :)

I have no idea how this winter will pan out. There were a few pointers to a colder winter earlier this autumn including the record low sea ice this summer.

Met office models suggest colder than average but not likely to be as severe as 2010
And
enhanced levels of snow compared to last year, even though the winter may be drier than average (with very high uncertainty on precip levels)

All fascinating stuff but only time will tell!

The metoffice have issued a Cold weather Level 2 Alert for some regions, Friday am-Saturday am, for frost, ice and fog.

Happy Birthday, redlac!
And what a nice 'birthday present' that was (if you like snow, that is!)

Oh bloody hell - DD couldn't get to school this morning because of the bloody rain - took her 2 hours to get half way through what would normally be a 1 hour journey before having to turn back - she will never bloody go to school if it snows!

redlac · 27/11/2012 11:57

thank you! It was a nice birthday present for a couple of days but after I had cleared the drive for the 40th time it kind of took the shine of it :)

Redlac I remember that (I'm in C Scotland too). We have brilliant photos of the kids on a pile of cleared snow in our garden that was about 8ft tall and it didn't entirely melt till towards the end of Jan. I was able to ski down our street!

That's an early Level 2!

Happy Birthday Redlac!!!

Models are falling in with a cold scenario for at least the first half of December. GFS is starting to agree with UKMO I think. Just looked at the charts and oh boy, they look like proper winter. For instance by the end of next week they are showing wide spread max daytime temps of around 0C with showers coming a long way inland from the east.

  • crashing straight from autumn to winter again.

south devon. it's cold!!

mild part of the world. showing 1 degree for a xmas fair on the 8th dec.

bollocky cold. that'll be the heating on then!

Report
OhYoubadbadKitten · 27/11/2012 21:44

Yup to the heating, we've hardly needed ours so far!

One proviso is that the models have been all over the place til this evening, so they will still need watching to make sure they don't change their minds.

So snow showers more and more in north eastern hilly areas this week. Then. Monday?? Maybe very wet, maybe ermm... White in places. Will keep a very close eye on that one.

Can people please keep an eye on the weather in Skegness at the weekend?

I am going to Butlins to British Folk Festival and I need to know what to wear and if I will get back home!!

Weather man on Points West said there was the possibility of snow round these parts next week.

Yay - I can defrost my freezer before Christmas, it's getting really desperate now. Boo, my joints are playing up and I get scared trying to get around on slipperyness.

We might have to brush off our rulers for measuring snow depth and buy emergency supplies of hot chocolate and squirty cream (like last year/last time we had snow!)

Aargh, just lost the post I was tryopomg and Internet playing up.

Will try to keep an eye on Skegness. At the moment I'd say that wintry showers are quite likely. Certainly going to be cold. Wrap up warm!

Freezing fog could be a nasty issue this weekend. Will try and catch up with the details of that this afternoon.

Oldsilver, these are brilliant. I have a couple of pairs which I need to dig out. They really do make a difference. You can also get similar ones on amazon, and I noticed some were on prime so you could get them before the week is out.

OYBBK what do you think the chance of snow in West Sussex for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week? I'm moving from Lancashire on Monday and the removal team are delivering our stuff on Tuesday & Wednesday.

I trust you more than the Met Office Grin

Well Monday now looks wet and quite mild in the south! Positively disgusting day. (That Has to change, else I'll be very cross as I've something going on myself). Tuesday, you could catch some showers,, but cooling down. Wednesday similar.

In fact, GFS has things a fair bit warmer next week, unsettled and perhaps very wet indeed on Thursday. Bastard weather. Scotland looks more wintry and could have quite a snowy time of it in hilly areas.

Stupid models. Stupid weather.

Report
OhYoubadbadKitten · 28/11/2012 20:59

And when I say mild I don't mean comfortably mild but single digit raw wet yuk.
Colder the further north you go, so sleet into the mix further north and then maybe snow even further north. Not going to attempt details, cos that would be impossible at this stage.
