No met ofice warnings at the moment and the path of the storm is still uncertain, but at the moment I think there is potential for widespread severe gales - just unsure of where atm.

Starry night here - if you have the same then go and admire Jupiter so close and bright to the moon. A little bit stunning

gosh I saw that without knowing! when I locked the front door I could see the moon through the fanlight, & I noticed a very bright star to the South but didn't think anything of it!

you are so educational, kitten Smile

Ponders · 03/01/2012 12:55

btw it is windy here (E Lancs) atm but nothing out of the ordinary - it was worse earlier, apparently, but I wasn't awake for it

Trumpton · 03/01/2012 13:11

Hail is sweeping in HUGE bands past the window. I am not, repeat NOT, getting out of my bed. Bloody frightening here. I think the house is moving altho that might be the windows flexing. Roof tile just flew past the window as well. Glad the boats did not sail today.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/01/2012 13:15

Ok,

what happened today in Scotland was a sting jet - which basically is a zone of very strong winds in a low pressure system that is deepening very rapidly. This 'jet' of winds descends through the atmosphere to ground level - as it does so it accelerates (because as it descends it dries the air it goes through, causing evaporative cooling which makes the air denser and so accelerates the flow downwards)

In the south of England and also Wales the gales were general gales that you get in the warm sector of a deep low pressure, but then a squall line ( a line of severe weather ahead of a cold front) developed and that was the bit when got very windy and very wet all of a sudden.

We had the most hideous morning, torrential rain, huge wind (NE hampshire) AND the school run. I've lost one trellis to a falling branch, the roof felt off my shed and one side of my garden fence is leaning into the neighbours - but is held up by the bit further down leaning the other way into my garden!
NOW, we have glorious sunshine, blue sky and a tiny breeze Confused - but the temperature must have dropped by about 3 degrees in the last hour.

pepperrabbit · 03/01/2012 13:21

In fact, exactly as OYBBK explained... Grin

travellingwilbury · 03/01/2012 13:22

All clear now in Sussex , two fence panels down but we now have blue skies and a tiny breeze , weird .

doradoo · 03/01/2012 13:31

Anyone know what it's being predicted to do - am crossing the channel tomorrow - on my own with 3dcs.... Dover is currently shut and I don't want too bumpy a crossing.

Is tomorrow meant to be calmer?

TobyLeWolef · 03/01/2012 13:34

It's calmed down a lot here in Kent in the last half hour or so. Still a bit breezy but nothing like it was!

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/01/2012 13:50

Tomorrow will be still windy doradoo - could be a bit rough but not stormy.

Ponders · 03/01/2012 13:52

From BBC News site

12.22pm: P&O Ferries said it had had to suspend sailings between Dover and Calais and that at least one UK-bound vessel which had set off from Calais was unable to dock at Dover and was waiting for an improvement in the weather

poor things stuck on that boat Sad

Ponders · 03/01/2012 13:52

Guardian, sorry, not BBC

doradoo · 03/01/2012 14:08

Dover is now open again - lets hope what's left blows itself out overnight and is lovely and calm for me tomorrow!! FIngers crossed et al.

Sad WellHello

TobyLeWolef · 03/01/2012 14:53

Hmmm...it's darkening and getting a bit more breezy again in Kent now.

EduStudent · 03/01/2012 15:04

Bright sunshine here in the Midlands, though the wind's kept up. Looks like we might be getting more cloud soon though.

Doradoo - I've been on the first ferry out after Dover being shut due to gales, they put massive inflatable bumpers on the side of the ferry to help stabilise it. It was okay, more surreal that scary (as someone who is scared of boats, scared of storms and prone to seasickness Blush )

laughalot · 03/01/2012 15:18

ohyoubadkitten it said on east midlands today news that we may get snow the next few days in the midlands do you see much in the way of this happening please ?

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/01/2012 15:27

laughalot - nothing I can see, temps well above zero in the daytime. Maybe some in the pennines this evening...? (but I'm really not sure about that)

laughalot · 03/01/2012 15:33

thankyou x

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 03/01/2012 18:02

Ive seen roumour of torrential rain & more winds for tomorrow - is thsi true? :(

stormyseason · 03/01/2012 18:20

Forth one have said it is a possiblity but not as bad as today. Need to watch Sean (in Scotland) in the next 10 mins for an update.

I hope not as I can't stand another day stuck in doors with a 3 year old.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/01/2012 18:48

For central and northern Scotland, rain will be moving across from the west (maybe snow by tomorrow night???). Gusts to 50mph maybe a bit higher in spots. Thursday still breezy but much nicer.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/01/2012 19:40

Edinburgh had gusts of 102mph. Exceptional (the bad sort).
