Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

We were woken four or five times in the night by awful hail and sleet battering the windows.

Now very cold and will report back on any ice later!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 06/12/2011 07:16

sounds nasty manky! All peaceful down south!
Good luck journoem :)

Dreadful out on the roads and pavements this morning here in Leicester. We had a frost for most of the night, then we had a light rain shower this morning and that fell on the frozen ground. It was like an ice~rink at DD1's school when I dropped her off.

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 06/12/2011 10:14

The lake district mountains are covered in snow and look very pretty.
We still have no snow but have had hail stones/rain/sleet.

Marne · 06/12/2011 10:21

I want snow Sad

Im in the sw so not much chance off getting any here although Met check say we will get some next week (but they are often wrong).

HarrietJones · 06/12/2011 11:57

We are got loads of hail last night but sunny/cold today,

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 06/12/2011 12:44

updated warnings

Really important to pay attention to these warnings for thursday/friday. I'll talk about the snow aspect first:

blizzard conditions will occur across much of Scotland. Snow is also likely at higher altitudes in northern England and Wales. Perhaps even a little on the SW Moors. Where it doesnt snow, heavy rain is likely.

Wind.
Some models are showing storm force winds across Scotland with this storm. Severe gales are likely as a minimum including across northern and England and down some of the east coast down to include a significant part of EA.

Even if you are out of the warning areas, it is sensible to keep an eye on them because the path of the storm may still vary from that which is forecast. Even in the south the winds will be strong to gale force.

Take care all.

Oh god.

As if two inches of ice on the pavements wasn't enough...

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 06/12/2011 12:57

Ooh, keeping my eye on this now. We are just covered in the Met office warning. Damn. I was going to clean the chickens out on Thursday.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 06/12/2011 13:06

Could be an opportunity for them to get free flying lessons Chickens Xmas Grin

Bunbaker and journoem - head up the hill towards Lodge Moor, we still have some here.

tak1ngchances · 06/12/2011 15:27

Looks like it's going to turn freezing even down in the south east at the weekend

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 06/12/2011 15:51

Looks like Thursday and Friday could be snowy in the north west but don't quote me on that!

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 06/12/2011 16:11

Just looked at the forecast on the telly and they are saying rain on Thursday so will just have to wait and see.

moonmother · 06/12/2011 16:42

Here in South Bedfordshire it's freezing and it's just started raining Shock raining i tell ya ....

I want SNOW !

HarrietJones · 06/12/2011 16:45

No don't want snow thurs/fri. Am in Penrith & lakes both days!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 06/12/2011 17:44

Winds for Scotland look even stronger in the latest model output. Storm force winds showing thurs night/friday.
Blackcat, I think you may well be right.

Everyone in the SE stop asking for snow this minute. If I have to have an unattended home birth I will be highly pissed off. You can have all the snow you want from mid Jan onwards.

midnightexpress · 06/12/2011 20:18

LOL. Strathclyde weather is now just a yellow square for Thurs and Fri. No discernable features beneath all the weather.

It's a hollow lol, BTW.

You lot down south, stop wishing this on yourselves. Inches of untreated ice on the pavements. Puddles of filthy slush, black ice. It's crap. And we have gritters, unlike you lot.

mankyscotslass · 07/12/2011 06:59

Mums in Renfrewshire - the local roads in her town haven't been gritted and the pavements are inches thick in cimpacted snow and ice.

She feels like a prisoner in her own home. (she has balance/mobility issues that make walknig difficult at the best of times)

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 07/12/2011 07:24

Hmmm... I do NOT want to get stuck in Glasgow on Thursday. Sad

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 07/12/2011 07:49

morning update :)

met office warnings

So for today Scotland is still seeing trouble with snow with many of you 'up there' waking to significant amounts (which isnt really a forecast!!) a little more this evening for some in the north of Scotland.

Tomorrows low.
Nasty. Damaging winds from tomorrow afternoon. 80mph+ gusts for western and perhaps central Scotland. Northern England (particularly the NW) will also see strong to severe gales, as will NI and northern Wales.
Currently the met office are showing heavy rain for Scotland over the storm. Treat that forecast with caution. It may well start off as rain but I think that it will turn to snow - especially over northern parts of Scotland and also higher ground. Personally if I were living in in Western or central Scotland I would be preparing for power cuts at this point and certainly wouldnt travel tomorrow evening.

Take care - back later.

Thanks OYBBK.

I'll warn mum to be prepared.

BTW, another lively night here - woken several times by high winds and hail/sleet rattling the windows.

At least there was no thunder and lighning - unlike the night before!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 07/12/2011 08:09

Manky, you are getting all the fun Xmas Wink
