Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

Xmas Confused

Not so sure about the fun - I have just spent half an hour wrestling with tap paper and tacks trying to salvage the play house roof in the rain and wind!

Although I am sure the neighbours were amused!

Had to dodge a flying Santa on the way to school, which freaked youngest DS out a bit!

midnightexpress · 07/12/2011 11:40

Pretty much all our ice and snow melted overnight but the winds are already quite brisk. At least the sun is shining atm

Tomorrow is starting to sound a bit Armageddonish. May have to tether the DC. DS1 in particular is of the 'liable to fly off in high winds' build. DS2's pizza intake should be sufficient to keep him grounded.

SantasStrapon · 07/12/2011 11:53

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee! We have a yellow snow alert for Thursday and Friday.

Xmas Grin
midnightexpress · 07/12/2011 11:54

Yoiks, our weather warning has jus turned RED! Eek

redlac · 07/12/2011 11:54

EEEK! Just read your message and seen the RED warnings on the Met Office site.

I'm off to find lots of candles and torches, dig out the fleecy blankets and camping stove in preparedness!

Red warning here too.....Starting to get breezy already, although beautiful blue sky atm.

miSaltireandwine · 07/12/2011 12:10

OYBK - my mum is menat to be coming to visit on Friday- from near Dumfries down to North Yorkshire. looking at those red warnings I am wondering if i should tell her to stay home, given that they'll be coming across the A66 Hmm

Methe · 07/12/2011 12:11

We have a yellow warning for thurs and fri about snow and gales. I've just walked around the nature reserve with my 2 year old and he almost got blown off his feet! Hope it doesnt get too bad, he'll be blown away completely..

Sparklingbaubles · 07/12/2011 12:39

How far south is the snow coming? I daren't look.

GloriaSmud · 07/12/2011 12:40

I don't think the metoffice warnings mention it but netweather says there could be a possible north sea storm surge and flooding down the east coast, as the storm passes across the country.

Marne · 07/12/2011 12:44

No warning for us down south but its bloody windy today, our road is fll of recycling bins blown around and my rubbish bag has disapeared. The winds bloody cold but no sign of snow for us Sad.

Sparklingbaubles · 07/12/2011 12:47

The DC are getting a sledge each for Christmas. I don't want to have to give them these til Christmas. Grin

GloriaSmud · 07/12/2011 12:57

Sparkling ~ I noticed the sledges in Wilkinsons on Saturday and said to DH if we got one of those for the children, it definitely wouldn't snow!

Sparklingbaubles · 07/12/2011 13:00

But if it does Gloria you won't be able to get one anywhere. Bit of a dilemma. Dad bought me a big snow shovel so it probably won't now. Sad

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 07/12/2011 13:07

yeah just got back and saw the red warnings, I was thinking this morning that they would be appropriate. As they would say in the States this is a dangerous storm. Please all in the relevant areas, really do take heed. Travel will be dangerous, power cuts and damage to buildings is likely. Secure things in your garden and make sure you are prepared.

Gloria, they are right the storm surge could be a real issue with coastal flooding a distinct possibility. I dont know if the EA will post warnings but worth keeping an eye on if you live n the NW coast.

Fed up of snow already and its only day 4! Heavy snow again just now. So pretty but when I work back shifts and DH starts work in the middle of the night its such a worry Sad Did built a fantastic snowman yesterday though! Xmas Smile

We are pretty high up +1000ft in a small village right between Glasgow & Edinburgh.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 07/12/2011 13:14

also met office have issued a cold weather alert

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadReindeer · 07/12/2011 13:15

Puff, you'll have a rough night tomorrow (even by Scottish standards) , please dont travel in it unless it is an utter emergency.

PuffOfSmoke · 07/12/2011 13:18

DH works in Glasgow and leaves here at 2.30am, will see if he will go and stay with his Mum who lives closer on Thursday. He drives for a living so will be out in it - was in his van for 18 hours one day last December!

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 07/12/2011 13:25

I'm in South Derbyshire (very south, think four counties meet up). Do I need to tether the trampoline to the garage?

Lisatheonewhoeatsdrytoast · 07/12/2011 13:26

Hmm im in East Lothian (220 ft above seal level tho) [frgin] So no waves for me, however the red warning for winds and ruddy heavy snow are a bit of a nightmare...knew i should have picked up a snow shovel in tesco this morning Xmas Grin

I hate wind, and we've had snow already this week and i'd prefer no blizzards please :)

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 07/12/2011 13:27

I am a bit worried about this wind! It is very strong today and I hope it's not going to get worse. My DD's pram almost got blown over this morning when we were out and about.( I was hanging on for dear life) I intend to stay home if possible now for the next couple of days but will have to do school run if they stay open.

YaMaYaMa · 07/12/2011 13:49

Gosh it's windy here in the NW. Just told my mum to check with her patients (she's a district nurse) that they have blankets and such downstairs after seeing cold weather alert. I'm a bit worried about elderly people on their own locally, there's nobody vulnerable in my road but I'm not sure how I'd go about helping anyone else.
