Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

Cold, wet and with a thin layer of slush under foot.

It's been sleeting/snowing on and off all morning.

GloriaSmud · 16/12/2011 14:08

Nothing here (Leicester). Looked out at 4.45am and it had started sleeting and thought, "'Ere we go, snowmageddon here we come", and was really expecting to wake up to a Winterwonderland this morning. But there was nothing so major disappointment for DDs and I. DH wasn't disappointed; he didn't think we'd get any snow anyway!

south345 · 16/12/2011 14:09

Nothing here (east yorks)

laughalot · 16/12/2011 14:12

um what happened to the heavy snow predicted in the midlands, not a flake.

midnightexpress · 16/12/2011 14:24

I guess it fell on Glasgow, laughalot (where it wasn't forecast).

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 16/12/2011 18:01

Laughalot, was the nature of todays weather I'm afraid, very hard to forecast but some in the midlands did see snow. I think that the tv forecasts often struggle to state the uncertainty.

Morning all.
A bit of sleet and snow here this am but too warm to settle. Curious as to how the conditions are in the Pennines? Other than perhaps on a higher ground temporarily I dont think snow will settle anywhere other than northern Scotland.

Interesting to see a little snow down some parts of the east coast showing today. Are they settling at all?

Tomorrow we have have a couple of warm fronts cross the country with a resulting heavy rain, perhaps turning wintry over higher ground and in parts of Scotland. Turning mild on Wednesday. Last forecast for a few days from me as I'll be without internet access.

Morning!

We were woken by littlest Manky yelling "It's snowing and it's sticking", at about 7. Followed quickly be a rendition of "Jingle Bells". Xmas Grin

It has snowed a little, enough to give a covering, but it's stopped now, and the snow nearest the patio is beginning to melt, so I'm sure in the next few hours it will have gone.

GloriaSmud · 18/12/2011 08:49

We started off about 20 minutes ago with graupel, then sleet, then big fat flakes of snow, back to sleet and now, we're having big fat flakes again! The children are really excited and sitting at the window, watching it all.

mankyscotslass · 18/12/2011 09:04

Looks like its going to start again.

SiL in Glossp just posted some pics on Facebook - she is going to have to dig the car out. Xmas Shock

Looks like 3 -4 cm of snow there.

GloriaSmud · 18/12/2011 09:09

Still going here. We've probably got all of 1/2cm out there!

bilblio · 18/12/2011 09:16

We've got about 3cm in Stalybridge Manky and it's still coming down.
We need to figure out how to get a turkey now. We were going to go the farmers market today... not that I care, I'm a veggie. :)

mankyscotslass · 18/12/2011 09:43

Biblio, I forgot you were out that way. DN is moaning about having to walk to work - it's only 15 minutes downhill to the town centre - told her to sit on a tea tray and slide. Xmas Grin

Just had some sleet - our covering is not going to last. Xmas Sad

Hulababy · 18/12/2011 10:55

A tiny bit of snow again this morning. Think we might end up with a bit every day for the foreseeable!

SugarAndSpiceMistletoeAndWine · 18/12/2011 11:05

Light dusting on the tops of the houses here in Norfolk. Don't fancy any more though, we are moving house next week!

bilblio · 18/12/2011 11:58

manky we've just been out, me with the pram, it's not slippy really I thought it would be as it was such a hard frost last night. So your DN should be fine with her tray :) It's melting on the roads quickly and we've blue skies now so it might all go and she can walk back up the hill.

mankyscotslass · 18/12/2011 12:54

I can't believe the difference in snowfall locally.

I'm just back from Stockport (hardly any snow), and Ashton (more than us).

And the hills look beautiful.

Sunny and dry here - very cold though so not much melting going on.

Freakyfroggie · 18/12/2011 12:59

OYBBR, I'm on the east coast, Suffolk. Just had a flurry of big flakes but nothing settling.

Hulababy · 18/12/2011 19:20

One big issue here today is the very very slippy paths. Our path to the door and the doorstep are incredibly slippery, dangerously so. No salt in though - hoping it will be better tomorrow. Some of the pavements out and about earlier were too.

mankyscotslass · 18/12/2011 19:46

The pavements here are lethal too.

The council don't have the funds to grit the pavements in our area. The shopping centres and some of the local shops have gritted outside their premises, but what us is that if people can't get out their own homes to get there? Sad

We cleared a fair section of the path outside our house today, and up to the corner so our neighbours could get out too, but we were the only ones on our street that bothered.

GloriaSmud · 18/12/2011 20:05

We have a slippery pavement problem too, I went out this afternoon and despite the sunshine and just above zero temperatures, it was very icy. We've got a frost now but I think it's forecast for a weather front to come in during the night/early tomorrow and for it to warm up, so I'm hoping that there won't be any de-icing of cars for the school run in the morning.

There's a weather warning out for central bits of Scotland for snow as the front moves in but I think as it's so icy out there, that other places could get a few flakes of snow as the milder front moves across (OYBBR could probably give some thoughts on that but know she hasn't got internet access at the moment!)

midnightexpress · 19/12/2011 11:31

Oh the pavement thing makes me Angry. Every year it's the same. The council website says it's 'not practical' for them to grit the pavements, but I really think they ought to set money aside to make it practical, especially on bigger roads. Frankly I'd rather they spent money on that than on Christmas lights. When I was in the school this morning there was a poor wee P1 boy with an enormous bump on his head, clearly from slipping on the pavement on his way in. I guess elderly people are just confined to quarters until it melts. It's just ridiculous. The council don't even grit the pavements outside the school ffs and this morning it's like an ice rink - ice, with frozen rain on top with a little extra unfrozen rain just to make it even more difficult to tell where is slippy. Grrr.
