Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

It's not gonna make Sussex is it Sad

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 04/12/2011 21:24

We have just had some sleet in the NW England.Xmas Smile

bilblio · 04/12/2011 23:32

Lots of hail & sleet on the M61 around Chorley & Bolton earlier. A really grim drive. Made worse by a lane closed due to a car fire, then 7wo DS waking and screaming for food, which woke DD who was crying about earache.

I'm east of Manchester yet just before you climb the Pennines. No snow here yet but it's turned very cold. The Snake Pass & Cat & Fiddle are closed due to ice.

bilblio · 04/12/2011 23:33

My gmail seems to think it's thundering? Xmas Confused

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/12/2011 23:42

It's snowing here in Belfast and starting to lie.

HarrietJones · 05/12/2011 07:54

Snow on my doorstep :(

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 05/12/2011 08:13

Really running behind this morning so just time for updated warnings
looks like some sleet showers will hit the east coast today around EA and the NE
Conditions will settle down a little bit tomorrow afternoon and looking better for all wednesday before heavy rain (and perhaps snow for higher parts of Scotland) sweeps the much of the UK accompanied by strong winds on thursday.

more later.

HarrietJones Are you north or south Cumbria?

We are near the sea so no snow here yet.Xmas Smile

mankyscotslass · 05/12/2011 09:54

A little snow on car windscreens this morning, but only squally hail and sleet since then.

TobyLeWolef · 05/12/2011 14:05

Lots of snow for Kent, please!

OrmIrian · 05/12/2011 14:13

Well we had a smattering of hail.

Hmm Which is bit pathetic after last year. Please try harder weather!

ThighsTheLimit · 05/12/2011 14:19

Well you were spot on! Went to bed about 10ish last night and woke up to about 4 inches of snow this morning in Lanarkshire.
Trains disrupted and roads in and out of our town were a nightmare.
Main roads in and around Glasgow seem OK.
The clouds are gathering again, so we might be in for another dumping of the white stuff.

SantasStrapon · 05/12/2011 14:35

We have had sleet here in Louth.

I'm all ready for Christmas, so I'll make an order for deep snow any time from now onwards, please.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 05/12/2011 15:47

Oh cripes Thighs - welcome to December!

We had another dump at pick-up time this afternoon, much to the DC's delight. Big fat flakes of snow. Just in from clearing the road in front of the house, and DC drinking hot choc with rosy faces. Smile [motherly glow emoticon]. The main roads round here aren't too bad. The snow is lying, but it's quite wet, so if it freezes tonight it'll be worse tomorrow than today, I suspect. And I haven't seen as many gritters as usual out (in fact, I haven't seen any, though I think they must have been out) - no doubt summat to do with yer Austerity.

The blizzardy winds at the end of the week look rather less inviting though. Erk.

HarrietJones · 05/12/2011 19:47

South Cumbria.

Had bits of snow all day. Good flurry at lunch time ( when I was putting a new bulb in the headlight [grr]

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 05/12/2011 20:53

midnight, you have it spot on re blizzards. The models are at the moment showing genuine blizzards for Scotland (some may get heavy rain instead of snow) with severe gale force winds thursday night. Bloody nasty and I would advise anyone in the warning area to strongly consider not travelling thursday night/friday morning if the forecast doesnt change.

My DM travelled back from Manchester to Scotland on the train this afternoon - she said travelling through Dumfries and Galloway and Lanarkshire was like stepping into Narnia.

The streets in her hometown were lethal. It has to be really bad before snow lies where she lives (she is on the riverside), but it was lying enough to worry her and make her cautious when walking. (She has mobility issues)

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 05/12/2011 21:15

Harriet me too. although I guess you are further inland as we have no snow here. They said on the local radio that it is on the higher ground and in the lake district.

HarrietJones · 05/12/2011 21:24

I work inland but live nearer the coast.

Hulababy · 05/12/2011 21:26

We had snow overnight in Sheffield. Had to clear my windows and roof this morning. Three miles down the hill near work and there was pretty much no sign of any snow!

It has been snow/sleet/hail type snow/rain on and off near home all day but it is currently much lighter and wetter than earlier.

Bunbaker · 06/12/2011 06:48

I work in Sheffield and haven't seen a flake.

Ambi · 06/12/2011 06:55

Snow in Penrith yesterday, was lovely driving up the M6 and seeing the hills covered with snow. Bit sleety now though

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 06/12/2011 06:59

Hula and BB just shows how fickle snow can be (and how on the edge the conditions are for it in some areas)
Plenty of warnings for ice today.

Calmer today in terms of snow - some still in Central and perhaps parts of Western Scotland. Rain moving east from Wales this afternoon but it will be patchy. Still got my eyes on the very nasty low pressure Thursday night.

No snow here in central Sheffield which sucks as I have an exam this morning and was hoping for a snow day, Bart Simpson style :(
