Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

I want snow!! I am in Northants, is it likely?

mankyscotslass · 04/12/2011 10:29

Heavy squally rain here, we are close to the Pennines, but mostly protected from the snow unless it's very bad, like the last two years.

SIL lives in Glossop, so they usually get it bad there. Looks like she may get snow there this week.

midnightexpress · 04/12/2011 10:31

Snow on the Campsie Fells this morning, but not lying in Glasgow (yet...).

Labradorlover · 04/12/2011 10:32

Just a wee snow shower earlier, Edinburgh. Grin

habbibu · 04/12/2011 11:15

Hi, Otter! you need to put a beacon on your hill so I can see you properly. Looks as though it's melted a bit now.

habbibu · 04/12/2011 11:16

I LOVE these threads, Kitten. You are genuine MN royalty.

serotoninbutterfly · 04/12/2011 11:28

Marking place - I need snow in my life Grin in north oxon please. Whenever you like! Wink

YouCantTeuchThis · 04/12/2011 11:39

I can't believe it - just when the forecast looks set to be less windy, letting me get away for Christmas shopping, the goddamn snow raises its ugly head Sad

I am more than happy for snow once I have made it to civilisation and back!

OYBB...please tell me I will be able to get from inner hebrides to east coast of Scotland and back sometime before Christmas??!!

Last year we had a huge high pressure (created by unusually cold sea temps) that sat over Greenland steering the jet stream much further south than usual. It meant that our usual weather ended up over the med and instead our weather came from the East and the North. you can kind of generalise and say that the jet stream separates the warm air in the south from the cold air in the north.

This year, so far the pattern looks very different. We are ending up on the cold side of the jet stream at the moment (hence the drop in temps over the next few days) but the weather is very much coming from the atlantic as there is no blocking high pressure like there was last year.

Teuch, its not going to be like last year (for the next week or two at least). I'm unsure as to how much 'normal' amounts of snow affect your travel and you will likely experience snow on and off.

Really squally hail here this afternoon too.

VJayJingles · 04/12/2011 14:12

waswondering thanks for the camera link, I'm not too far from one of them and I've forwarded the info to my dad who is up for a visit next week so he can keep an eye on the roads before setting off.

It's snowed on and off so far today.

Bunbaker · 04/12/2011 15:14

"Heavy squally rain here, we are close to the Pennines"

Same here, near Penistone. It is flipping cold as well!

mankyscotslass · 04/12/2011 16:27

I'm the other side of the Pennines, near Hyde. Smile

Really cold and still raining this evening, we are taking the car to MIL's this evening, usually we walk. Brrr

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 04/12/2011 16:56

Looks like the snow will come a little further south over the next couple of days, to include the north west right down to the Pennines (particularly the western side) and higher ground in northern Wales by Tuesday night. Going to be a right mixed bag for those at lower levels in those regions so be aware that ice is going to be a nasty part of the equation.

oh i do hope there's no snow till xmas.
had to cancel plans with the freaky weather last year, and missed out on seeing my friend.
she is planning to visit here on 19th dec-22nd, here being Devon, and i hope the trains from London to here don't get cancelled.

Have left it late to book, and will be doing that tomorow. fingers crossed eh.

brawhen · 04/12/2011 17:22

Snow showers here off & on all day (nr Stirling, Central Scotland). 2yo & 4yo fell down on ice total of 6 times between them on 250yd walk home just now. Both in snow boots but will need kneepads tomorrow!

Hulababy · 04/12/2011 17:37

We had sleet yesterday in Sheffield.

I really don't want snow. I hate driving in it.

laughalot · 04/12/2011 19:16

Do we think the east midlands are due any ?

2gorgeousboys · 04/12/2011 19:51

Snow here in North Yorkshire Grin

GloriaSmud · 04/12/2011 19:54

laughalot ~ According to the Countryfile forecast, I don't think we're due anything in this bout of snow/cold weather for the beginning of this week; just icy roads. Then there's a spell of wet weather midweek/Thursday and then it turns colder again, next weekend. We might see the odd snow flurry next weekend but doesn't look like we're in for any heavy falls of snow yet.

openerofjars · 04/12/2011 20:04

Sleet and hail over the Peaks from Holmfirth to Bakewell this evening. Brr.

HarrietJones · 04/12/2011 20:11
