Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

CosmicMouse - still being difficult to tell. Your timings I'm afraid arent very helpful - 9am could be in the thick of it but on the positive side it may just turn out to be heavy rain. I still think that he should avoid the Salisbury Plains.

Oxford and Buckingham - dodgy ground there again - could literally go either way. Tis a beastly low pressure this one.

LordFlasheart - Maybe a little but it will be more nuisance value than anything useful really I think.

Hulababy's snow is a prime indicator of how tricky its been. There were snow warnings out on Wednesday but I'm not sure if they covered the Sheffield area - I think they were all to the west of there.

Thanks OYBBR, I know it's really hard to predict - Given he's leaving Cornwall between 8 & 9, I'm hoping he'll be following the bad weather rather than being in the thick of it. But we'll just have to wait and see. He will be doing M4/M5 rather than the A303 in any case.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 20:45

I reckon he will be fine on that route :)

I am hoping that we have had our share now and the next lot will miss us entirely. Have stuff to do once the school holidays start tomorrow - no time for snow.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 21:53

i know the feeling hulababy.

Some thoughts on a weather forum that the track is a little further nE than predicted putting E. Midlands at risk of snow. I dont normally post that kind of 'hearsay' but some may find it helpful.

I think (and I could certainly be wrong) that a little low pressure developed over the North of Scotland bringing this snow to Scotland. I dont recall seeing that in yesterdays charts. Interesting to analyse - a bugger if you werent expecting it and were hoping to do stuff today!!!

Just sitting on my suitcase to close it and checking Stansted-Nottingham A1 tonight-ish is still OK.....

mankyscotslass · 16/12/2011 07:41

Nothing lying here but just had 20 minutes of large wet flakes.

pepperrabbit · 16/12/2011 07:46

The rain here turned to big soggy snowflakes at about 6.30am. Kids very disappointed it's not settling.. (NE Hampshire)
Still, it has motivated them to get out of bed slightly faster than usual Xmas Grin

midnightexpress · 16/12/2011 07:53

WT actual F? There's about 2 inches of snow out there?

This wasn't in the forecast! Gah....

Bucharest · 16/12/2011 07:57

Out where Midnight?

moonmother · 16/12/2011 08:01

A cm or 2 here in South Beds, and still coming down. Fluctuating between light and heavy snow.

Dc's are disgusted the schools appear to be open Grin- they break up for Xmas today you think they wouldn't complain ....

CherrysOnTheNaughtyList · 16/12/2011 08:07

well we were predicted heavy snow overnight and it didnt happen!!! Xmas Sad

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 16/12/2011 08:08

I think you should be ok tonight Bucharest, this should stop by lunchtime/mid afternoon. Mind you it is clearly doing unexpected things in some parts of the UK, so don't take that as gospel!

Ok chaps, wont be around for the rest of today. Back tomorrow. Take care all.

Right come on, which of you buggers asked for snow in Surrey? Xmas Angry. If this sleet gets thicker and settles....

Bucharest · 16/12/2011 08:26

THankyou!

See you on the other side!

MistleTobyLeWolef · 16/12/2011 09:24

We had about 1/2 hour of big snowflakes here in Kent, but interspersed with rain/sleet, and falling onto very wet ground after rain all night.

tak1ngchances · 16/12/2011 09:48

Lots of wet snow falling in Chester this morning but no sticking

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 16/12/2011 10:02

Snowing and settling here (South Cumbria) Xmas Grin

PestoFestivio · 16/12/2011 10:08

Snowing here on outskirts of Brighton too. It's just starting to look like settling too...

DangerousDorothy · 16/12/2011 12:48

Lots of sleet and hail in Sefton (Merseyside) and for the last hour or so lots of big fat snow that is sticking! Yay!
Funnily enough it is exactly a year to the day when we had over a foot of snow.

Still now I've written about it then it will probably stop!
