Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

It's looking very weird outside my office window this morning. All grey and yellow.

mankyscotslass · 14/12/2011 10:43

Cold, bright and dry here.

teta · 14/12/2011 11:17

There was a light sprinkling of snow here in the shropshire hills to the great excitement of the dc's.The dog isn't so happy though!.More snow forecast and cold temps.according to the met office up until christmas?.

GloriaSmud · 14/12/2011 11:29

Chilly with sunny spells here in Leicester.
As well as being under a yellow warning for high winds for Thursday/Friday, the metoffice are also forecasting 'light snow' for us for Friday morning. Interesting to see whether that happens or whether the weather system changes direction and we get wind and rain instead.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 12:44

Well, apart from for ice the warnings have gone
I'm not at all surprised - its been a difficult week for forecasting! Still looking for a possible snow event as the top edge of the storm leaves us Friday.

OP posts:
MistleTobyLeWolef · 14/12/2011 12:53

We've still got yellow warnings for wind in the SE.

GloriaSmud · 14/12/2011 12:59

Ooo we're still under a yellow warning for snow! Xmas Grin But I get the feeling it'll only be over the high bits of Leicestershire, which isn't where I am Xmas Sad
(OYBBR ~ How's the cough?)

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 17:28

cough-ish Gloria but thanks for asking :) I did make a fab discovery last night - codeine really does work. No night coughing - yay!!! (had some from a particularly bad spell of arthritis last year but didnt take much cos I dont like the effect. )

Midlands do look quite prone to snow from tomorrow night into Friday. Then Friday looks like the NE of UK (down through Yorkshire) will be most vulnerable.

Still looking like a green Christmas but perhaps dominated by a high pressure.

Wind warnings are back on for southern coastal counties for thurs/fri storm. (worth watching)
Also ice warnings for all.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 20:15

There seems to be some concern as to how much snow this storm may bring on friday to the Midlands area. One to watch.

usualsuspect · 14/12/2011 20:19

Snow in the midlands you say?

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 21:16

Quite possibly - as I said on another thread it entirely dpends on when and how much the storm deepens and which track it takes. bloody nightmare. I keep thinking the models are nailing it then they change prediction again.

laughalot · 14/12/2011 21:18

snow for midlands does a happy nottinghamshire dance Xmas Grin

midnightexpress · 14/12/2011 21:22

If it's any consolation OYBBK, the BBC weather last night also offered 2 possibilities, much the same as yours. 1. Like this: trees blown down, snow yadda yadda 2. Like this: trees not blown down, possibly some rain, yadda yadda. Confused

We seem to be spared this weekend up here (ice aside). Is it me, or after last year's debacle, are there loads more weather warnings than there used to be? We seem to get one almost every day atm, though they also seem to disappear as often as they appear. And the m-ways round here are full of 'low temp forecast' 'high winds' and 'winter weather - take care!' signs too.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 07:28

That's good to hear Midnight!

I really dont understand the warning system at all any more. Warnings when the weather is just being weatherish and none when its blowing down fences.

The BBC says it's going to snow in Sevenoaks tomorrow!!!! (This is exciting as I live in Sevenoaks and am now off work until after Christmas so don't need to worry about the predictable train chaos tomorrow night)

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 14:22

It is possible for a time Lydia - tis very marginal though, most likely to happen when its raining heavily and starts turning to snow - means chaos cos any gritting attempts just gets washed away.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 14:27

Does look like the met office are really going for a snow in the Midlands affair overnight and into tomorrow updated warnings I think it will be a case where one area just sees heavy rain or perhaps slushy rubbish while another area close by ends up with proper snow.

Most likely area seems to be in a south of a line drawn between the Wash and Liverpool and away from the south coast (with perhaps the exception of Kent for a bit)

Worth being aware that Friday night could become very icy as the storm moves away leaving clear skies over night.

Do we have any idea if the snow is likely to settle across the SW?

DH is currently in poxy Cornwall and is due to travel back to Bucks tomorrow morning. Really worried he's going to get stuck somewhere :(

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 15/12/2011 19:36

There is a risk that he will be travelling back through it I'm afraid CosmicMouse, especially around Wiltshire. If I were him I'd go up the M5 and then the M4 to avoid the A303 if there is any hints of snow. M5 is more likely to be clear of snow I think.

OP posts:
CosmicMouse · 15/12/2011 19:48

Thanks OYBBR.

They've stocked up on provisions just in case and are planning on leaving somewhere between 8 and 9. Hoping it'll all have come and gone by the time they get up to Wiltshire

How likely is it to do anything meaningful further North East? Across Oxfordshire and into Bucks?

LordFlasheart · 15/12/2011 19:55

Snow in London? Please?

Hulababy · 15/12/2011 19:57

Hmmm... woke to a fair bit of snow this morning in Sheffield - had more than a couple of inches. Not particularly forecast on the news either, even caught the council out and their gritters according to the BBC site. It's all gone again now and I would like ti to stay that way please!!!

SantasStrapon · 15/12/2011 20:05

Snowed in Skegness today, caused much excitement at DD2's school apparently.

Didn't see any here though Xmas Sad

notnowImreading · 15/12/2011 20:16

We're travelling up to Scarborough from the south coast on Sunday - are we likely to get stuck, do you think? And god forbid, are we likely to get stuck up there?
