Massive warning at the start of this thread. I'm not a qualified meteorologist, just a very keen amateur. I do frequently get things wrong and sometimes I miss things when life gets very busy (which it is rather atm) But, I'll do my best to give people a heads up to snow forecasts as we get them, as long as you all promise not to sue/hate me when it all goes horribly wrong.

So first area to highlight is the western side of Scotland including the highlands and part of central Scotland. Met office have warnings Sunday/into Monday

Also very worth being aware that towards the end of this week, hilly parts of northern England including the Pennines (and perhaps welsh hills too?) may well get some snow by the end of the working week.

I'd take OYBBK's forecasts over the Daily Records any day :)

Ooh tell us more about thundersnow please!

HighHeidYin · 12/12/2011 15:41

Thundersnow is lightening storms in the snow. Had thundersnow last winter in Stirling.

Not ready to deal with -10 again. Better go stock up on salt Sad

HighHeidYin · 12/12/2011 15:41

Sorry, 'are' lightening storms.

HighHeidYin · 12/12/2011 15:43

Actually that's not right. Ignore me. Tired and worried about my dad.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 12/12/2011 15:53

looks pretty rough wind wise tomorrow evening for the NW and southern Scotland. low pressure looks pretty deep (940hpa!) with a tight pressure gradient.

I remember that HighHeidYin!

brawhen · 12/12/2011 17:48

Me too - thundersnow. It was quite eerie!

midnightexpress · 12/12/2011 18:48

Just been to check my barometer and it's right down at the bottom (950). Oooooh!

mankyscotslass · 12/12/2011 19:22

Mine says 972 at the moment....but I am in the North West.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 12/12/2011 19:38

I think you need to calibrate your barometer midnight! shouldnt be lower than about 970.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 12/12/2011 19:56

It's definitely breezy here, but I thin we are due to get it worse Thursday, and not be too bad tonight.

midnightexpress · 12/12/2011 20:08

How do you do that, I wonder? I only know about tapping it Grin. Just checked again and it's even dropped below 950.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 12/12/2011 20:09

I have no idea with a tip tappy sort! What sort of altitude are you at? Standard readings are corrected to sea level pressure and the higher up you are the lower the actual pressure reading you'll get (cos as you can imagine you have less air sitting on top of you.)

OP posts:
midnightexpress · 12/12/2011 20:12

Ah, that makes sense. It's probably the barometer then. We're up a hill, but not a very high one, just a sort of big city hill iykwim!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 13/12/2011 13:18

Could be some snow over the moors in the SW tomorrow for a time. Coupled with strong winds perhaps not thebest day to go for a nice walk.

I have to laugh at the latest model outputs. The nasty storm for thurs/fri has gone! It is being modelled either as an unremarkable low pressure across southen England or its not there at all. However, it does bring in the possibility of snow for a short time even down to low levels across southern counties in the early hours of Friday.

snow warnings over a large area for today and tomorrow.

laughalot · 13/12/2011 13:50

it shows snow for us east midlands - nottinghamshire but bbc weather dosent say anything and it dosent look very snowy boo.

MistleTobyLeWolef · 13/12/2011 14:03

This morning on local weather (Kent) it looked like they'd basically thrown all the little pictures at the map. We had strong winds, rain, hail and snow.

The sky outside is bright blue with a few wispy clouds.

redlac · 13/12/2011 14:45

Central Scotland and taysides yellow warning for snow has been upgraded to amber - its wild out there now with driving winds and sleet

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 13/12/2011 15:08

It looks pretty brutal tbh! Quite grateful for our breezy rather ordinary day.

odated warnings for snow

morning all - as you can see by the warnings the west is particularly vulnerable to snow showers. As for others - well Friday Saturday could provide a little white surprise as heavy rain gives way to some snow showers. Even in the south a little snow may be seen temporarily.

Next week the trend is for it to become much milder and Christmas looks...... green for most.

mankyscotslass · 14/12/2011 08:11

Snow warnings have moved away from us. Sad
