Let's hope the snow doesn't reach the south coast this weekend - I'm taking DS on the santa train.

Habbibu · 13/12/2010 12:35

Oh my - there are the snow warnings now for the NW - Highlands 60%. Strathclyde also mentioned. Nothing so far for Perthshire and Fife.

Thundersnow was spooky - we were out sledging in it. Very odd experience.

gibbberish · 13/12/2010 14:41

Oh noooo! We are due to fly to Tenerife from Edinburgh on Thursday! Hopefully will be before too much snow has fallen and the airports will still be operating.

But dh isn't flying out until Saturday... really isn't looking good Sad

ThankyouSanta · 13/12/2010 14:44

Anyone know the forecast for Greater Manchester on Thursady and Friday please??

I have my 20 week scan on Friday and would hate to have to miss it Sad

ThankyouSanta · 13/12/2010 14:44

oops Thursday

SantaClausImWorthIt · 13/12/2010 15:09

We're supposed to be driving from London to Cardiff on Friday, for our Christmas weekend with my in-laws (whom I love very much and will be disappointed to miss - just in case you thought this was another anti-in-laws story!!!).

What are the chances of snow in Cardiff?

And even if we get there, will be able to get back to London on Monday?

(I think I might go and do an extra supermarket shop, just in case!)

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 13/12/2010 15:47

shove her this way dietcoke :)

updated advisories with met office going for up to 20cm in Wales and the southwest. Risk continues into friday.

I'm going to go and have alook at the models in a few mins (just got in from Christmas shopping and need to warm up for a few mins - my fingers are not typing very well (see how dedicated I am Grin )

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 13/12/2010 16:06

Be aware that thursday's cold front may be even trickier than it first appears. It may arrive as heavy rain which would quickly freeze over giving a layer of proper glazed ice before the snow starts.

This would be a really really nasty travel scenario and as it is due to be a daytime event, then please allow loads of extra commuting time home in the evening. If this does happen then you need to be prepared for being stuck.

If you are home with a temp gauge then reported observations would be great, the temp will plummet as it goes through.

Remember though, this is forecasting and the outlook often changes....

moonmother · 13/12/2010 16:14

I'm looking forward to Thursday Grin

Will post obs as and when it happens.

I still have Xmas shopping to do at the weekend, sounds like it could be fun ...

oh wise snowykitten - Am I being reckless to plan a return trip over the north york moors this wednesday afternoon/evening. I've already had to postpone twice...

Deliaskis · 13/12/2010 16:50

I'm really interested in how fast the temps are going to plummet. Looks like it's going to be quite a sudden shift from the current 'relatively' benign weather across much of the UK at least). As you say OYSSK, this could well make for horrendous travel conditions. Hope people who are planning to be out that day are well prepared with proper cold weather kit in the car etc.

headfairy · 13/12/2010 16:56

ouch, sounds nasty. I think we had something similar last winter. I was at the hospital (East Surrey in Redhill) having my last ante natal scan on 21st December and it was raining quite hard when I left home. During the 5 minute drive the temperature dropped from 3 degrees to -3 and the snow started coming down in buckets. I had my five minute appointment and went to leave the hospital and the entire area was gridlocked. What had happened was the entire M25 Surrey section had gone haywire because people who had been driving in rain were suddenly driving in heavy snow with freezing roads. There were shunts galore. Gridlocked the whole of the area for at least 8 hours. My simple 5 minute check up which started at 2pm ended with me getting home at 10pm.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 13/12/2010 17:02

unavailable, I think its the best chance you'll have of making the journey before Christmas.

unavailable · 13/12/2010 17:05

Thanks snowy. I'll take a a shovel and a thermos and hope for a clear run!

SantasMooningArse · 13/12/2010 17:09

SantaBecause- Dh has appointments in Cardiff and is trying to remake them for Wednesday. the pronblem with Cardiff is the whole motorwat grounds to a halt the minute it snows, alst eyar people were stuck for 7 hours- Dh was pretty much last one through (weaving dramtically in his Smart car).

OTOH we had no snow at all last time even though it was predicted (well, dustings- nothing of note) so inclined to disbeleive until I see, frankly.

laughalot · 13/12/2010 18:56

Do we think the east midlands will miss it ?
