I saw some canned banana blossom today. Anyone tried it?

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 26/09/2020 14:23

@SerenityNowwwww I've eaten it at a Brighton restaurant this summer, cooked as 'fish' and chips, I think with some nori or similar cooked with it. There's a recipe in my new Bosh book that uses it, think it might be a Goan style curry. I've had a tin for a while, but think I'm likely to start with the Bosh curry

BinkyandBunty · 28/09/2020 10:18

After lurking forever for inspiration - thank you @PartTimeDomesticGoddess for the sticky rice tray bake, it's delicious! - I'm going to start posting to keep myself honest.

Trying to eat well and lose some iso-kgs. I'm in Aus so will be posting at weird times.

L: leftovers from yesterday's Sri Lankan cooking class (potato curry, dahl, coconut sambal)

S: carrot with hommus, apple, leftover cold veg sausage (yuck)

D. Bagel with toasted mexicana cheese and beans. Blueberry soya yoghurt with banana and flaked almonds.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 28/09/2020 19:14

@ppeatfruit I've never cooked a pumpkin that way. Do you do anything to it, and how do you/did you eat it?
@Breathmiller are you back from your holiday? If you haven't bought a sandwich toaster yet, I can heartily recommend a grilled cheese sandwich (US style, done in a frying pan). You do need to press it down regularly while the cheese is melting, but we all prefer those to the ones from the cheap sandwich toaster we had. It might make a difference if you buy a more expensive one, but try a frying pan (I have a non stick frying pan, so butter the outside of the sandwich the same as for a machine and put into a hot pan, no oil)
@BinkyandBunty welcome Smile

Yesterday started feeling a bit shabby after drinking too much tequila and staying up late on Saturday night
B: 4 x vegan American style pancakes with lots of maple syrup
L: hm roasted cauliflower soup with crusty bread and flora block butter. Mince pie. Another vegan huggs recipe, was nice but not a strong cauliflower flavour, but I didn't have a whole head of cauliflower to use
D: traybake from the guardian on Saturday which was roasted kale, carrot, chickpeas and tomatoes with a couple of Richmond sausages
S: hula hoops, nakd bar, bowl of ice cream, ombar pistachio chocolate bar

Ooooh @PartTimeDomesticGoddess
Thank you for that tip. I am back from my holiday and have been eyeing up sandwich toastie machines with my birthday money. But I'm a sucker for something that can be done without a special gadget.

I could eat grilled Mexicana every day at the moment

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 29/09/2020 05:45

Literally the best thing about moving to the US was learning about grilled cheese sandwiches! Bloody genius

footprintsintheslow · 29/09/2020 05:57

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess

Yesterday was

B: spiced porridge with sultanas, soya milk and seeds
L: crackers, 2 with white bean spread from a jar and 2 with violife cream cheese. Mango and plums.
D: large salad, Sainsbury's plant burger in a bun with sweet potato fries, half a corn on the cob and M&S plant kitchen coleslaw
S: family size bag of sweet and salty popcorn...

This sounds yummy
ppeatfruit · 29/09/2020 08:52

PartTime The beauty of it is that you just make a few holes in it (no peeling) then brush with a tiny amount of oil. You choose how long you bake it for (if you want to slice and fry it later) then don't let it cook for too long just until you can get a sharpish knife into it.

Obviously you leave it longer if you want to slice and eat it immediately. I warmed mine up the day after for supper too. I eat the peel but it's easy to peel when cooked this way.

B. HM Apple and pear smoothie
L. Sandwich with cucumber, lettuce, onion, and beetroot slices.
S. Leftover pumpkin and yeast flakes with quinoa

BinkyandBunty · 29/09/2020 09:54

L: air fried vegies with pine nuts and leftover tomato sauce from the kids' pasta

S: cashews, dried seaweed, homegrown celery with hommus

D: almond milk, coconut yoghurt and protein powder smoothie

I am loving my new air fryer to quickly roast a serve of veg or crisp up anything I'd usually cook in the oven. My oven is huge and takes forever to heat up, air fryer cooks in 10-15 mins.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 29/09/2020 10:17

Yesterday was
B: date/coffee/banana/soya milk/chocolate PB powder smoothie. I can't contemplate a Monday morning without one now
L: veg and tofu red Thai curry and rice
D: large salad topped with sprouted lentils, pan fried gnocchi with a herb/caper/lemon/olive oil sauce
S: plums, pineapple

@BinkyandBunty an air fryer is the next gadget that I'm very very tempted by

OP posts:
BinkyandBunty · 29/09/2020 10:56

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess I'm borrowing one at the moment to see if it's worth the investment, and so far it's a big yes. They're so big, so really need to earn their place in the kitchen! Especially useful for my teens to heat up snacks.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 29/09/2020 16:39

I really want one too!

Breathmiller · 29/09/2020 18:34

B. Granola and oat milk
L. What else but toasted Mexicana on bagel? I had tomatoes too to mix it up a bit. I will get sick of at it some point , I'm sure. I bought bread today to do the toasted sandwich in a frying pan tomorrow. Just for a bit of variety Grin
D. Pasta and vegan pesto with loads of veggies and salad.
S. 2 packets salted crisps.
