You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

I’ve missed loads, this week has been crazy busy. And this term is only going to get busier.

My school is asking for volunteers to do summer school. No mention of how much you get paid. There’s no way, I want to spend some time with my kids.

RigaBalsam · 17/04/2021 08:20

Can any of you suggest a £3 ish keepsake that I could buy my y11 form for when they leave in a few weeks?

I have no idea what I could get them.

Or maybe nothing?

TheHoneyBadger · 17/04/2021 08:20

Mother you have to sign in to any bbc thing. Unless you mean it's on another site?

Don't blame you WhenShe. My flights are booked and I'm just praying they won't be cancelled. I don't drive and live in a village and don't have tons of money and there's just ds and I - staying in England doesn't mean driving all over the country for day trips and going camping and nice little b&bs or weeks in the new forest etc. If I was stuck here I might as well be doing some summer school I guess but still.

I think cards with nice personal messages would be lovely and enough Riga? Maybe with a form photo of them that you've taken?

Ah thanks that could be a good idea. I have one taken at Christmas in y8.
MrsHamlet · 17/04/2021 08:32

I used to get each of my form a suitable mr men book. They were always quite fun :)

TheHoneyBadger · 17/04/2021 08:34

Ooh - I love 'The Places You'll Go' by Dr Seuss.

That's what I gave to niece and nephews when they left for uni.

My year 11 are all getting a card with "screw your courage to the sticking point" on.
Year 13 are getting a mug with two herbal tea bags (because they laugh at mine) and "to thine own self be true" on.

I tend to get them personalised pens with something like ‘I am a Computer Science Star’ from Amazon. A box works out at usually under a £1 per pen.
motherrunner · 17/04/2021 09:05

@TheHoneyBadger I can listen to it through podcasts on my iPhone. No need to subscribe to anything.

RigaBalsam · 17/04/2021 09:15

Thanks some great ideas.

Ooh, that had all gone quiet so I thought it might have been dropped!

is it just a couple of weeks or the whole holiday? How will they get volunteers if they don’t tell you how much it pays??

Great - thanks mother - I've never explored podcasts on my iphone. I guess I just put the title in a search bar...

I'm going to the gym at 12 maybe I will listen whilst on the treadmill.

CallmeHendricks · 17/04/2021 10:02

@WhenSheWasBad, Maybe they mean "voluntary" in the true sense of the word!

motherrunner · 17/04/2021 10:25

I love podcasts. I listen to Women’s Hour religiously.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/04/2021 10:45

Good point Hendricks - or thinking well if people volunteer we won't have to make these paid positions - let's just put it out there and see what happens first.

I'm not good at listening motherrunner - I'm not a believer in learning styles but I do find it hard to just listen and not see anything. Presumably Alexa will deliver me podcasts too when I get round to setting her up? Could be good for when I'm cooking so busy with my hands but brain bored.

Not even my school would expect teachers to work for free (or would they?)

I’m sure it’s paid, but at the basic rate. I don’t get paid enough to do summer school. Not worth it.

motherunner I love a good podcast too. In Our Time is excellent.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/04/2021 10:47

I sometimes read my posts and think, hmm how did you never suspect adhd badger? I read my own words nowadays and go oh yeah, I can't sit still and listen and get really agitated and virtually angry when I have to (long boring inset sessions).

I don't drive so I don't hear the radio in a car so it's just not in my experience of day to day life. Cooking and gym could work.

motherrunner · 17/04/2021 10:53

I love podcasts as I’m a very ‘busy’ person. I just can’t sit, I’m always pottering and doing jobs so having a podcast on the go is lovely to listen to in the background.

Thanks for the recommendation @WhenSheWasBad. I also like to listen to Two Mr Ps in a Podcast. The teacher stories on there are hilarious!

motherrunner · 17/04/2021 10:57

Totally going off topic but can I pick the brains of Yr 2/Maths teachers? DS is struggling to subtract numbers when they’re both greater than 10. He can add easily enough using the ‘bow tie’ method. What’s the method for subtraction? I asked DD but as she just ‘sees’ answers she just shrugged and told me the answer!

noblegiraffe · 17/04/2021 11:00

What on earth is the bow tie method?

motherrunner · 17/04/2021 11:04

Hard to explain. You kind of draw lines under the digits so it looks like a bow tie. I’ll take a pic instead!

Just showed it to my Y3 and she didn't recognise it so I guess they don't do it in her school, just column method.
