You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

It didn’t read troll-like. Just a concerned teacher. Not over dramatic or anything

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2021 23:50

Weird. Maybe cold feet about whistle blowing then.

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2021 23:53

Maths teachers: might be worth keeping an eye on this from Mark McCourt who has decided to offer unlimited maths tutoring from £1 per week

“I'm absolutely committed to making supplementary education truly accessible to low income families.

Large surveys show clearly that £1 per week is the limit for the poorest 10% of households. So that's our pricing.

And if a family can't pay, we'll give it to them for free.”

Not sure how he’s going to manage that, but he might be hiring...

Hello all. Haven't had time to catch up with everyone / everything, but I definitely agree with the 'what could you do about that?' for year 3!

As an aside, what would you do if a child in your class snapped a piece off one of their front adult teeth at playtime when falling over?

Not sure if I am being precious because it's my child..... but I don't think 'tell mum when you get home' is good enough really. (They are not in pain btw)

Saucery · 30/04/2021 06:12

Hell, twinkletoes that would be an immediate phone call to parents to inform them at my school! Shock

This happened to my dd in YrR. I had an immediate phone call to collect her and take her to the dentist! She had banged heads with a classmate and damaged the nerve in the tooth.
Beachhuts90 · 30/04/2021 06:30

I'd call home right away for that.

If I went to a book club, I would want to talk about the book, but I wouldn't want to write the answer to things like 'which word tells you that X character was cross in chapter 2?'

This is what's brilliant about Jane Considine. We do book talk 3x a week and it's no writing, just discussing books in small groups (arranged by reading level) looking at the text through different lenses. The lenses are things like, setting and sensed and what is the language like in the book and what do we think about the characters and do I like this book? Some of the kids struggle with it (my 1:1 isn't really there yet socially but that's to be expected) but there are some brilliant discussions at all the levels. It's definitely something I'd like to do as a teacher. The level of engagement compared with when we did guided reading in autumn term is markedly different.

Beachhuts90 · 30/04/2021 06:31

Senses not sensed!

HarrietDVane · 30/04/2021 06:32

Definitely an immediate phone call home for a broken tooth!

Morning all - it's finally Friday! Hope everyone has a good day.

twinkletoesimnot · 30/04/2021 06:38

Thank you!
That's what I would have thought.
It's not massive and it's not hurting her but .... my baby's tooth😢

DreamingofBrie · 30/04/2021 06:49

Had my first jab yesterday and feeling grotty today. I have a similar reaction to the flu jab - headache, joints, temperature up. Thankfully only 2 lessons and I can do some A-level prep in the meantime. Have hardly slept so I feel dreadful!

We barely advertise teaching roles because it is a waste of money. People scrabble around looking for their friend's auntie's niece's friend.

Iamnotthe1 · 30/04/2021 06:53

Rule
Saw something on Twitter this evening where a teacher was doing that show off thing about stuff they do in class. It was getting children to recall information from a specific chapter in a book. WHY? Lots of 'this is amazing' type responses, and I'm just thinking 'I don't get it'.

If I'm honest, I think this about a lot of stuff on EduTwitter. There's a lot of flash but I often question whether it's backed up with substance.

eitak22 · 30/04/2021 07:04

I'd have rang home for a tooth issue like that.

Rule I know what you mean, we don't teach them a love of reading but just to find answers and analyse. Lots of mine can do it so well verbally but when we make them write it looks like they don't know it.

As for the safeguarding thread, I write many a behaviour report and safeguarding report if they put a limit I'd be fuming. That's what leaves to things being missed.

That was me yesterday Dreaming, please take it easy.
MsAwesomeDragon · 30/04/2021 07:14

Our safeguarding lead has always said she'd far rather be told about too many small, trivial things than not be told about something relevant. And seeing as we don't always know when a kid has something big going on, pass everything up to her and her team. I often pass things on like "X has a broken arm, he says he fell off his bike", or "y has a large bruise on his face, he's quite cagey about how it happened". The safeguarding team need to know this stuff if they're going to spot any patterns and notice that a child is at risk.

Cracklefraggle · 30/04/2021 07:15

2nd vac today, back afterwards to teach so hopefully no side effects - don't think any would kick in that fast anyway.

All of our year groups have had the behaviour assembly. Feral at the moment.

LolaSmiles · 30/04/2021 08:17

I suggested the OP report her thread because in addition to the SLT restricting safeguarding issue, the OP subsequently shared about a child's situation that staff had raised with SLT. Although it wasn't detailed, reading her updates could have been very outing to anyone involved.

They might not have been genuine, but if it was then they were very sensible to get it deleted.

A job advertised as ‘science’ will get loads of applicants because there’s a lot of biology teachers. If it had been advertised as ‘chemistry’ there would have been the six applicants they’ve shortlisted. I’m not as impressed as the thread seems to be.
lonelyplanet · 30/04/2021 08:45

Residential cancelled in my school too. We're planning some day trips instead.

How ridiculous is this - I have an outpatient hospital procedure in a few weeks. I was phoned with the appointment and told that I will need to isolate for 3 days beforehand. I asked whether my family needed to as well - the response was not unless they are going shopping or anything like that. I said that my kids go to school (one at a very large 6th form). She said not to worry that was fine!!

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2021 11:29

Yes, but read the thread and there are discussions about oethr subjects.

We advertise as science and get zero applicants.

Head of science just advertised and there were three applicants, one internal...

English regularly gets none!

PE is the only one with a fairly good supply but we'd never have about about 20!

CarrieBlue · 30/04/2021 11:34

I guess the ‘lost my job in the initial pandemic and trained as a teacher but want to stay in London so I can get my old job back as soon as possible’ comes into play. It’s definitely not the case here in the NE, we even get jobs advertised up to ups on occasion!

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2021 14:02

There was someone from the NE on the Twitter thread who insisted they had billions of applicants! And someone from Lincs which I really reeally do not believe is supported by government stats.

HerdyGerdy · 30/04/2021 14:50

That Twitter thread is not helping my, ‘oh holy fuck I need a job, where are they all?!!’

I’m going to admit for once that I have a job interview. Does anyone have any questions tucked away for an English HoD?

BigBobBoots · 30/04/2021 15:14

Good luck Herdy sorry I can't help with Qs.
Who knows where those figs are coming from? Of the teachers leaving our school at the end of term (those who have announced anyway) none are planning to look for another teaching job at the moment. I suspect that says more about our school than the national state of teacher recruitment.
