So continuing on from our boycott/flowers we need to continue to defend our profession. This is teacher/school staff chat - if you do not fall into that category please start you own thread elsewhere.

TheHoneyBadger

We became the enemy because we are an easy way to score points with the electorate.

We are an easy target.

As an example a friend of mine was bitching about how shit the teachers were at the school that we went to.
I had to remind him of what an absolute twat he was to the teachers.

I think that most people come out of school thinking that the teachers were wrong about something and various successive governments have found it easy to capitalise in that.

StSaulOfSnacks · 29/04/2020 15:23

Flowers, CanI.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 15:23

Fully agree honey. The most important thing you can do at primary is ignite a love of learning and then the basics of reading, writing and maths. A happy child will
Learn etc.

The bbc is whipping up a lot of anxiety imo.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 15:26

canIThanks

Don't read them. Fuck em. I think you should consider contacting your gp. I'm borderline struggling with 2 kids and one day a week to work (going to have to work this wkend to catch up) and not doing half the other things you're doing.

Research toffee vodka and distract yourself. Your kids need you more I reckon.

Asuitablecat · 29/04/2020 15:26

Dc1 is getting REALLY good at fort nite. And dc2 has nailed 1 handed cartwheels. I can't do cartwheels.

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 15:28

appu we don't have infant schools!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 15:28

ShockThat's really impressive Asuitable. #makingmemories #theresmoretolifethangrades

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2020 15:30

I keep looking at teacher bashing threads almost like a form of self harm and it’s tipped me over the edge today

It’s not you, Can, you’re doing a fab job holding it together in a bloody global pandemic. Everyone who is in the public eye seems to be getting it in the neck right now. There’s a thread slating Captain Tom ffs!

You know how celebrities say that they never read their reviews or google themselves as a form of self protection? That’s what is needed here. Stick to the nice threads, or stay off MN because your mental health is too important not to.

Appuskidu · 29/04/2020 15:32

I guess things would have to be different per area then. Maybe y10/12/6/2 first in areas with infant/junior/secondary?

I can see it being a total nightmare no matter how it’s done, though!

bettybattenburg · 29/04/2020 15:32

Stick to the nice threads,

I was thinking in the wee small hours of the MN threads that are ongoing which are the nice areas of MN, perhaps we should share some of the nice ongoing threads?

CanICelebrate · 29/04/2020 15:34

Thank you @noblegiraffe I’m still crying but feeling less alone.

mnahmnah · 29/04/2020 15:34

I was managing to stay on top of things. But the last couple of days I feel like I’m losing the plot. Just keep remembering something else I should have done.

CanICelebrate · 29/04/2020 15:36

@NeurotrashWarrior thank you. I’ll speak to my gp as I’m on AD following trauma/ anxiety and may be able to increase my dose. No one at work knows though.

CanICelebrate · 29/04/2020 15:37

Sorry to make the thread depressing!! On a positive note I’ve taught some lovely video lessons today and seeing their faces was great

Chosennone · 29/04/2020 15:44

That thread in AIBU is pretty awful.
I've had to comment. I want to boycott but it is becoming horrendous. Why the venom regarding is getting paid when we're not working as much as before! My DH, like many, many others is furloughed and doesn't have to do a stroke!

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2020 15:44

Can do you think your school would be supportive if you did tell them?

It seems like schools are making lots of calls to parents to check how families are getting on, and sending smiley messages about not worrying about the work if you are struggling so they should acknowledge that some teachers might be struggling with the situation too.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/04/2020 15:49

Can I wonder if they should know? Our school are contacting staff to check in well-being.I've found it hard to be honest but I'm coping. It wouldn't take much to tip me over though and I will prioritise my health and mh after trying in the past and burning out badly. Oc health would be very supportive.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 29/04/2020 15:56

@CanICelebrate welcome to the refuge! There is a deliberate typo in the title to throw off the haters. Hope you have got your own mug. @RigaBalsam is already on the 'pop'. There may be some toffee vodka left stashed away at the back of the biscuits.

It is tough as we are doing our best as both teachers and parents. We just need to look out for each other

betty the 50 books thread are nice, aren't we??

Even Telly Addicts is getting a bit argumentative....

An HE thread I used to like has become a fight over why aren't we getting our fees back? What are lecturers actually doing? And they went on strike'. I am having to bite my tongue there, too.

I have a nice David Copperfield thread...

cheesecurdsandgravy · 29/04/2020 17:06

Christ on a bike. I’d enjoyed the last couple of days of calm, but people were REALLY saving it up for THAT thread weren’t they. And then another singular poster with an axe to grind on the thread that answered all the questions so succinctly... if that poster really is so vital for children, perhaps she should get on with her work, eh.

Shit, I’m out of gin.

phlebasconsidered · 29/04/2020 17:07

I can't teach my own kids at all. Dd is in her room because "I'm using that voice and I DON'T WANT YOUR HELP!!!!"

I am making potato, ham and chicken leftover croquettes with ds and ignoring her stamp up every.single.stair.

I also have a very large gin because I've finished my toffee vodka. I went to bed at 1am and got up at 5. I can't sleep - i think i'm so used to being on my feet and mentally doing twenty things at once that i'm just not tired enough, even though i'm exhausted. Plus I think my tyroid meds need upping. I'm just turning worries over and over about my own kids and my class. Finally got my staff mobile today so I can ring each child. And did a TAF meeting remotely. So stuff is still happening but I feel helpless - not least with my own kids!

Piggywaspushed · 29/04/2020 17:12

What thread is that cheese?

cheesecurdsandgravy · 29/04/2020 17:17

Today I used up my call minutes on my monthly phone plan for the first time ever in six years. Every week I telephone all the students with an EHCP, all the LAC and a selection of others from the LS register that require extra care and guidance.

I started at 9:30 and have just finished. I did take an hour for lunch. I’m bloody exhausted, we all know how intense the support these children and their families need, and how much they deserve (and need!) that time and effort.

I bet at least one of my “other” students have told their parents I haven’t yet responded to the question they asked about their work yet. I bloody hope that they are one of the parents that aren’t going to rant about it on mumsnet about “what have I been doing all day” Sad

SHIT and there’s NO WINE!

phlebasconsidered · 29/04/2020 17:18

I'm actually really worried about my relationship with dd. She's so angry and it mostly turns on me. I am letting her hole up in her room . She's such a social girl - we always have so many girls here it's like a busman's holiday for me at home and there's a sleepover more or less every weekend . She's really sad and angry and has gone from being very over anxious about work and completing it all to "What's the point - I probably won't be in the top set anymore now!" She is very high achieving. Plus I am expecting first period any day now and she really needs her first bra all of a sudden but i'm not allowed in her room.

And breathe. Sip gin.

cheesecurdsandgravy · 29/04/2020 17:19

The excellent one started by Sacha on AIBU to collate the responses to alllll the ridiculous questions is the one with the axe to grind poster. Although more have now joined her. Envy
