Meghan is still using the strategies that worked to get her attention as a D-list celeb... setting up pap strolls in car parks or "date nights" arriving/leaving restaurants

She has done this a lot since she moved back to the US - often released to grab attention from the RF events OR Harry's solo events that she wasn't invited to Amazing how often her security makes her walk right across the car park/along the pavement 😉😉😉

I can't figure out what's coming next - she must be bored rigid?!?

Obviously I am not saying country life is boring, but it's a very different lifestyle from sunny California, especially if you are on the outside of your desired social scene desperately looking in.

If she's using the time to get through her TBR (to be read) pile and go for a brisk country walk to see the cows with the DC (other livestock is available) then fair play to her, but W, C, KC3 all are much more countrylifey with quite substantial links to rural and agricultural activities.

I can't work out if her plan was spatula PH from a frying pan to a royal fire, then ghost him back to the US

Or if this is his brainchild, back to the fold (or not!!) and start again, again.

Or if neither one has a bloody plan

I'm so type A I just can't fathom it 😂

Most likely no plans involved.

Either the move back was driven by H or it lends credence to the rumours that it was down to issues over his US visa.

Either way the lack of direction seems typical of them.

Something has come to me while reading this informative and entertaining thread and before I say what, I was a Harry fan, I felt Meghan and he would be a lovely breath of fresh air and watched the wedding, with an increasingly incredulous air.

Having said that, why isn't anyone questioning that she is being controlling and potentially abusive towards Harry?

Lunde · Yesterday 15:05

Oh - and what was Meghan doing while Harry was at the Coronation"

.... getting papped "hiking" in a tarmac car park with Marcus - while wearing $157,000 worth of jewellery - including the (alleged) Diana watch and pulling Diana poses.

I believed that was the intent from the very beginning. Harry was clearly unhappy in the RF, she picked up on that and encouraged his grievances and the plan was to decamp to Cali and monetise his links with the RF and his connections to make money independently of the RF. All well and good, except monetising your links with the RF depends on actually having some, and as the years passed those got weaker and weaker - not helped by Spare and the OW interview.
Turns out that doing a flounce and pissing off the fam wasn't a good idea after all.

There’s a difference between life as a Royal and life in the Royal family, which I suppose he never picked apart and if she did vaguely understand that she worked it to her advantage.
What I mean is they are his FAMILY, and he generally seemed quite happy with his relations (or most of them anyway). Lots of cousins his age that he got on with etc. But he didn’t like Royal life, living in a goldfish bowl, having duties to perform, having his life mapped out for him. Which is quite understandable really.

Now if he had married the right woman I’m sure his family would have supported him in taking a step back. He could have retired to a Cotswold estate doing country stuff and just the minimum of Royal stuff. In short living a life not that different from his cousins Zara and Peter Phillips.
Or he could possibly have gone off to Africa like Earl Spencer did, though security and so on might have been a bit more problematic for him.

Anyway, unfortunately he married the wrong woman, who stoked his resentments, played on his deep fears of losing her like he lost his mother and isolated him from his family while convincing him they could do so much better without the RF, living in California.

Perhaps some of the counselling he supposedly had back in the day, before Meghan, could have helped him work out some of his contradictory emotions but that ship sailed a long time ago. Now we are left with a bitter husk of resentment, blaming everyone for his problems, unable to see or acknowledge where he has gone wrong and stuck in a sunk cost spiral.

The official story was that she didn’t want to leave Archie on his birthday . So she went out “ hiking”.
I am sure if she had been allowed a robe and tiara and a front row seat she would have been there !

I am wondering if H's vulnerability is why KCIII is working out what to do. He may think needs rescuing but there are also the children to consider.

With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder that QEII agreed to the marriage. The early examples of Meghan's character, the way she must have come across to courtiers and the family, and whatever the intelligence services unearthed about her were all red flags. As with Andrew, sentiment over-ruling judgement, perhaps.

How weird. The security guy is wearing big standard lace up shoes. Marcus is wearing trainers with either no socks or trainer socks. And Meghan, despite being bare armed, is wearing thick woolly socks and her hiking boots!

Even moving past how it would fly in the modern day if a fully grown (not even young for marriage) man was told by his grandma that he wasn’t allowed to marry someone, can you imagine the furore and cries of racism if it had been refused?

We are living in a different world between the likes of Charles & Andrew being told who they couldn’t marry to Harry’s era.

I’ve been involved in selling books online for nearly 20 years, my instincts tell me that the listing looked genuine.
It gave pretty extensive descriptions of the condition and damage using terminology used in the secondhand book trade about the bumping, rubbing, DJ and spine etc. It wasn’t written by a layman, but I guess it is possible the seller’s page was hacked.
The condition was only really fair for a book of this age, I’m not convinced a casual fraudster would have had the guile to deliberately age a book in this way - although a professional might have.
Although the price was excessive - the price was odd ending a high value book in 99p but this is the pricing convention used by the seller for their other books. I’m not sure they are a particularly experienced or specialist seller maybe they were just hoping for extra traffic to their selling page - they seem to specialise in signed modern first editions. It was an odd choice to put on their eBay page, the more obvious choice would have been to pass on to a specialist seller or an auction house.
I can imagine that they accidentally acquired the book as a job lot with others, sold on to them without anyone realising what the inscription said at the time. That may explain the damaged condition of the book; outsized and boxed up with normal sized books it would have got bashed about a bit.
I can see the journey of this book from a clear out of Frogmore when Eugenie moved, maybe then stored at her parents house at Royal Lodge for a while before being cleared out when AMB and Fergie left. Possibly sold on with other gifted lower value first editions.
i expect there has been quite a furere behind the scenes.

I haven't seen the actual listing, so thanks for that info. I only heard about the ad via Tom Sykes, who's great at royal journalism but knows stuff all about selling old books.

Personally, I wouldn't put up any book on ebay at that price. I was wondering if anyone had looked into the seller- but as you say they seem to specialise in signed modern 1st editions. So, they must be going broke!! (Sorry, but the market for 1st editions died a long time ago). I certainly wouldn't be suggesting it's of interest to museums. If it was, I'd be contacting museums. Here in Australia, we don't have anywhere near as many auction houses or museums as there are in London. And yet they didn't contact an auction house?

I think you could be bang on about the journey of the book from Frogmore to bookseller!

Possibly caught between a rock and a hard place. Refused permission? They would have eloped and told the story of the RF racism which stopped their marriage. They also know how volatile Harry was, maybe they thought with marriage and a good role, they'd settle down and be good.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · Yesterday 15:33

Agree with you Marchioness.
I really can’t quite see any collector with the money being interested in the book at all. There is no significant hook, will not increase in value or have any significance beyond our gossipy interest on a social media thread like this!
I think the biggest embarrassment is for the seller themselves, overpricing such an item takes away any credibility they may have had previously.

I wonder if the short exchange between H and the late Queen was him saying that M was pregnant hence her response ?
Or is that a conspiracy theory too far ?

Prince Harry left baffled by Queen's 'cryptic' reply when he asked to marry Meghan | Royal | News | Express.co.uk

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in Windsor in May 2018, but the Duke of Sussex had to first ask permission from Queen Elizabeth II.

AcrossthePond55 · Yesterday 15:47

As far as M's thoughts on H reconciling with his family, IMHO unless she can finagle a way in which she is sure that she'll be H's 'gatekeeper' with The Family and the MiGS then no, she wants no reconciliation. She certainly doesn't want them to be able to assert any influence over him. And I don't see TRF/MiGS not seeing through any machinations or manipulations to put her in that position. She's simply not as clever as she thinks she is. Not by a long chalk.

Do you think he's ashamed deep down ?

I think he has glimpses of his own shame, but very quickly covers it up with a burst of anger because he can’t face what he’s done, and also I think he gets a kick out of being angry as it gives him an adrenaline buzz. We saw a flash of it when Tom Bradby nearly challenged him on the titles. He’s quite unhinged now within this cycle. He feels his anger’s justified because his sycophantic interviewers do back down, and H thinks this is down to his superiority rather than the terms of the interview in the first place.

I doubt H will change any time soon. Maybe in his sixties when his kids are proper adults and telling him straight what a dreadful human he is.

The point about racism is a good one. Of course you're right that it's ridiculous that in 2027 a grown man had to ask his grandmother's permission to marry but the rule is still in place. She could have tried to persuade him to wait a year or so, but like any grandparent, I suppose she wanted to make him happy.

AcrossthePond55 · Yesterday 15:57

Starryfifty · Yesterday 13:54

I think only way H and hamlets would fit in would be when Meg spits him out and he's given a sanctuary akin to AMW but conditions are he keeps his head down. Which will be a problem as he's incapable

You know, I'm not so sure. I think subconsciously he needs to feel wanted and also to be told what to do, it's what made him such easy prey for M. If KC3 were to tell him directly to 'shut up and do what you're told or you'll be again cast out into the darkness' I think he'd comply. At this point he wouldn't have anywhere or anyone else to go to.

I think he'd end up rather like Prince M of Kent. Sort of on the periphery at certain royal function, but with no real role or official duties.

Puzzledandpissedoff · Yesterday 15:58

I doubt that would have suited Meghan, IdaGlossop, who clearly wanted to get the ring in place before what was always obvious became widely known, and it follows that Harry would have gone nuclear too ... "they're trying to stall the marriage because she's black"

MarchionessVonSausage · Yesterday 16:02

Back in 2018, when HAM came here to Oz and announced Megs was pregnant everyone was fucking thrilled. Until they weren't- it all went south when Megs started her diva shit. Fine- she was pregnant, many allowances were made for her behavior. Until she did too many things that were witnessed by staff and journalists.

I really wanted her to do well, but she fucked it up from the start.

Fast forward to the faux 'Royal' tour earlier this year to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. My DS age 10 has regular treatments there, I know the place very well. I could not believe HAM were allowed to do what they did. I took it up with the hospital PR... it's complicated. Sorry for ranting, but it really was quite shameful of them.

JSMill · Yesterday 16:03

Someone on X pointed out that when the Queen gave her written permission for W to get married C was described as ‘our trusted Catherine’ whereas M was just described as Rachel Meghan Markle. Clear proof HMQ had her doubts about the marriage.

The royals only need the sovereign's permission to marry to keep their place in the line of succession. Harry could have just got married but then they wouldn't have had a splendiferous affair with carriages and flags. And he and the hamlets would be out of the LoS.

And don't forget they're fresh out of LA environs where, as I understand it, everyone drives everywhere and that would be a very 'local' journey length.

You aren't too off the mark. The car is king in Calif.

I was born and raised in So Cal (live in No Cal now) but it isn't unusual for someone to drive 1-2 hours for a meal, usually to a picturesque location or a 'famous' eatery. I can remember my parents loading us up and driving 2 hours to a wonderful seafood place near Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara or a great German restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. They were exciting 'all day' trips for us.

A drive of 20 mins or so would be considered 'local'.

How revolting that he wrote about his private conversation with the late Queen about this. I didn't know this.
As we would say in Scotland " he would sell his Granny" .
