"The blood of the Covenant is stronger than the water of the womb" is actually the full saying. In other words, the very opposite to popular usage.
In the case of your post @StillHereLolNow, I'm not sure what your point is?

If PW became king now, I really can't see H included in coronation. Things might be different in a few years time though

If William became King now his actual coronation would still be several months away and would be preceded by Charles' funeral, which I don't think anyone would reasonably oppose Harry attending. So, William and Harry would be seen together at that, just as at their grandmother's funeral. William would now be King, of course, and Harry - and Meghan too, if she's there - would have to sing God Save the King.

@Williaminagingerwig
As Alex said, George would be King, but almost certainly Catherine as Regent. The PM and Ministers also advise.

I am quite sure that Kate cannot be regent because she is not in the line of succession. She could have guardianship of George while he is a minor, which is different from the regency. The regent, sadly, would be Harry 😩

Harry and Andrew would be skipped. It would be Beatrice or Edward.

Yes, Harry would be at his father's funeral, I would imagine. Do you think Meghan would attend? Anyway, if they went to the Coronation, they would have no role. Perhaps seated behind the Princess Royal's plumed hat. Or a large candle 😉

She can most certainly be Regent. It's entirely up to Parliament. Princess Margaret was supposed to be the Regent for the young Prince Charles - that role was legally transferred to Prince Philip, by Parliament.
I am going to add with certainty, that there is no way parliament would ever allow Prince Harry to be Regent!

BunnyBunbunbun · Yesterday 07:06

bluegreygreen · Yesterday 01:17

It would be up to the government.

Parliament could pass an Act to permit Catherine to be Regent for George until he came of age.
They did this for Philip on the accession of the late Queen, when Charles was just 3 years old.

I can't see there being any difficulty in doing the same for Catherine and George if needed.

Exactly. I don't think there is an issue here. If Charles dies before George turns 18, parliament would probably do this for Catherine.

I think Charles has quite a few years left in him, anyway.

Could Princess Anne be Regent? I know she's 75 but she would be excellent as she has so much common sense & experience IMHO

Williaminagingerwig · Yesterday 07:07

The question is, would Harry be able to cope with his brother's Coronation? He might have a flashback to sausages.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that Catherine wouldn't be a good choice. I was just wondering whether PA could be given the role . . . .

I doubt Anne would want to do it. Makes more sense for Catherine, who is George's mother and is closer to him.

I also think this is a very hypothetical question and the situation is extremely unlikely to arise.

Bit also, Andrew was only supposed to escort HMTLQ from the side door to the main aisle, then take his seat. But he carried on and escorted her to her own seat at the front.

Who was going to escort the elderly Queen to get her seat, though?

Yes, she could. It's up to Parliament. The Government will already have contingencies in place.
It's most likely that it's Catherine - the preference being set with Philip, but there could be a Regency Council with Anne and Ministers of State.
Anyway. Harry won't get within miles!

What qualifications do you need to be a Regent?

I hardly think being endorsed by Tom Cruise is anything to brag about. How long is it since he has seen his daughter?

I think an endorsement from Tom Cruise is neither here nor there for W+C beyond a fun night. But since he’s the biggest and most powerful movie star in the world right now, his endorsement would be extremely meaningful for a couple who left the RF, moved to USA and tried to set themselves up as Hollywood A-listers. (Especially when that couple evidently sees nothing wrong with ditching family members.)

I’ve no doubt that Meghan would absolutely love Tom Cruise to say how intelligent and funny she is, how much respect he has for her, and that Harry made a great choice. He never will though.

You need to be appointed by Parliament as someone appropriate to carry out the duties in support of the Head of State.

Blood is thicker than water which is probably worrying most of you on these threads of 44000 + posts. Just saying 🤷‍♀️

It's not worrying any of us that I can see.

And the full quote is 'the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb'

Yes, indeed - I said that's upthread! Not only is the quotation misunderstood and misapplied....it means absolutely nothing in this discussion!

Because if they constantly turned up at black tie galas they would be accused of only attending star-studded events and only attending things in London

The majority of events they go to are ones which the public can relate to ~ e.g. C attending the OAP lunch, W's visit to Wales to visit flood victims etc, their joint visit to Bute

They need a balance of different types of events in different areas and I think they have achieved that

Williaminagingerwig · Yesterday 07:41

Absolutely, @JuniperJumper. Plus I can guarantee that their priorities are with their ongoing charities and initiatives, and spending evenings with their children. I think they could be at glamorous events most nights of the week, if they chose.

MrsLeonFarrell · Yesterday 07:42

I rather doubt anyone will be swearing fealty at William's coronation. I'm expecting it to be a very different event to Charles'. Charles was stuck with the memory of the late Queen's service which seems extremely outdated and strange in the 21st century, which at the time couldn't be altered very much because of the nostalgia swirling around. I'm betting William will have a much freer hand to create a ceremony that is more suitable for a modern monarchy.

I'd like them to keep the anointing but skip the regalia and fealty. Make it about serving the country rather than the monarch.

That's really interesting. I wonder whether it could be changed to something like the Norwegians have which is more a service of dedication
