PLEASE can we wind down the use of the word "adjacent". It's in almost every post.
Royal adjacent I understand, it makes sense.
Cotswolds adjacent?
RAF base adjacent?
Bonkers!
You live near the Cotswolds, or in proximity to.
Ditto RAF base.
It's driving me up the wall.

Why? Did you mean to be so rude? It’s a fairly standard word/phrase. 🤷‍♀️

Lightbulb!

Could this be another move for Prince Hazard?

I'm thinking, more likely for them to find monarchal agnosticism and completely awash with red headed children to camouflage the precious ones in with (no flaming here, a mother of a red head, Irish parentage, the tone here is light hearted)

They could merch their new flounce 3.0 to America. And how cute could the scented candles be. ☘️

Would the Irish tolerate such a pair of gobshites?

The hire company being prepared to divulge details about their customer to a random non-official source on the phone. The hire company asking for the profession of the hirer.

Perhaps they said "Donchernow who our clients are? they're the DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX!" and the van hire co fell over themselves in their attempt to be helpful.

Did the van have a logo? that's a very amateur mistake on the part of these paps if it did.

Not that I believe a word.

You have reminded me of an interaction I witnessed in the early 1980s when I was waiting in a BBC Radio reception with a friend, an academic, who was about to be interviewed. Also in reception was Arthur Scargill, a highly visible figure during those times of industrial unrest. We both ignored him. My friend was called into the studio. Arthur was most put-out, expecting, presumably, to be interviewed before her. He looked at her and said 'Do you know who I am?' She paused on her way to the studio, looked him straight in the face, and said, a little haughtily: 'And do you know who I am?'

This is exactly the response Meghan needs, although the temptation to reply 'No' would be considerable.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 30/09/2026 17:49

I use adjacent when in close proximity is not necessarily the correct description and I don’t particularly want to pad out my post with lengthy descriptions about my exact relationship with RAF personnel and their schooling for a number of privacy reasons.

Yeah, that's never good, being rude back.

A national dislike of notions, it's true.

I’d love a peek at that parents’ WhatsApp group messages today. I wonder if M is still on it, and if she is, if anyone has made any pointed remarks about unwelcome publicity.

Anyway I was nearly run off the road by a white van whilst nearing the end of my regular bike ride through the Cotswold lanes. OK it was a slightly bigger one of those small lorry ones. I guessed he was on his way to the village shop so I looped round and parked my bike in front of the shop and accosted him. He claimed he hadn’t seen me! I naturally told him he should stop driving until he’s had his eyes tested as I wear a bright reflective yellow top and helmet.
Walkers relaxing with a coffee at the table outside were suitably entertained. My white van excitement for the day!

Just out of interest, how is one supposed to address a duchess, even a fake one?!

IdaGlossop · 30/09/2026 17:53

Williaminagingerwig · 30/09/2026 17:50

Yeah, that's never good, being rude back.

It was very good in this case. I enjoyed seeing Arthur Scargill's ego deflate because the previous week I had seen him twice, once marching ahead of a line of miners, the second time speeding along a motorway in a new Jaguar.

Styleinabeyance · 30/09/2026 17:54

It would be the making of the little O'Hamlets though.

Apparently she was with Ellen .

Also , they were maybe seated and someone went over . No idea, just rumours.

I can envisage a scenario where the server brought their plates and said something like "and the burger is for ma'am" and Meghan got all outraged and almost shouted "It's not ma'am! It's Duchess!"

I don't want this to be a derail, but in the interests of political balance, I knew and worked with Arthur Scargill and that is not how he was on a day to day basis.
Quite the opposite.

I’ve just had to read 10 pages really quickly to ensure this hadn’t been posted.
https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/26590089.staff-award-winning-cotswolds-pub-refused-serve-meghan-markle/

It’s odd that it’s just coming up now though as it’s dated 21ts September.
I wondered if it had been covered in a previous thread and that my menopausal brain had missed it.

OCTOBER
Im making a visit to a local independent business tomorrow to examine and discuss their work (getting done framing done) and on a nice day next week I’m highlighting accessibility on a boat trip on the River Tyne (taking paraplegic husband for a trip out)- just to keep you appraised of my local engagements .
I’m also going out for dinner with Rosie and Cath tomorrow and may get slightly pissed

Staff at award-winning Oxfordshire pub 'refused to serve' Meghan Markle

Staff at an award-winning Cotswolds pub in Oxfordshire reportedly "refused to serve" Meghan Markle and Ellen DeGeneres.

I'm pleased to hear it. Also not to derail, I got myself into a good few difficult conversations as a result of supporting the miners' strike in 1984, not least as a result of family links to South Yorkshire police.

It’s not particularly surprising that some of the staff were uncomfortable with her presence.
The pub is owned by the Daylesford group, the owner of which is Lady Bamford. The Bamford’s are very much part of the British Establishment and Lord Bamford is close friends with KC. In 2023 they rode in the King’s carriage procession at Ascot.

Just for ChubbyCheeks benefit - I am, of course, Cotswolds adjacent

I had a hectic end to my September diary.

A cultural excursion, an exclusive fundraising benevolent social engagement and a variety of meet and greets at the local hospital.

Being a socialite and benefactor of the arts is exhausting

(I went to the library, a PTA coffee morning and I had an outpatient appointment, and saw a friend in the out pt dept)

I'm finding it highly unlikely that US service kids would be going to a small private UK school. The US military DoDEA schools are extremely highly rated as far as educational excellence so it wouldn't be a decision based on that if they did. Perhaps if they have a UK parent or the family plans to stay in the UK after the active parent leaves service? I'm not saying they're 'better', just that they're 'just as good' as a highly rated UK school.

The other thing is that all DoDEA schools all follow the same curriculum so that transfers of duty station doesn't unduly disrupt their education. So a child living on a UK base would be following the same curricula as a child attending school on a base in Germany. For a child to attend a 'locality based' educational curricula school could be very disruptive should the parent be transferred to another country.

We have a US air base near us (2 in fact), lots of families opt to live off base and use local schools. There are quite a few at DS’s primary school (state) and a couple at DD’s secondary (independent). The local state schools actively encourage US service families as they get an “armed services premium” from the local council.

If Meg was refused service at a local pub, there would be screams of racism and misogyny. Didn't we have her latest bff thanking the UK for welcoming Meg ??

A good point. Another curiosity about this tale is that the school appears to have turned a blind eye to a vehicle parked outside their premises and a man pacing around their perimeter for two hours.

It isn't really believable in any way.

During covid I was part of a food hub that was set up, by some ex-army people. There was a rather nasty robbery from a foodbank at the beginning and so it was decided that it would be kept very quiet where we were and what we had so not to draw attention to us.

We had various ex-army people on the door and about, but when a white van drew up and the chap got out and started peering through windows, a couple of the army chaps went into combat mode and surrounded him very quickly.
He was a reporter, hoping to do a piece on the local food hub that had appeared out from nothing <his words>. Let's just say he left very thankful that he still was in one piece, showed his camera to prove he'd taken no photos and promising that he wouldn't post anything unless he was given the go ahead - and he didn't!

That would be the response I would expect from their security guys if they were there.

When I was at school now 40 years ago, I can remember the head going out to have a conversation with someone who seemed to be hanging about suspiciously (turned out they couldn't find where to read the water meter or something).

That would be the response from the school... if it happened. Unless of course they're hoping to scare the Hamlets off.
