Was King Charles wrong to take a rose from Charles Spencer's bouquet?

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 01:03

Charles Spencer says as Diana's coffin was lowered into the ground, several people there dropped flowers on the coffin. King Charles took a rose from Charles Spencers bouquet and dropped it on Diana's coffin.

This struck me as it shows a very casual disregard for other people's feelings. This was Charles Spencers flowers, but without a thought, king Charles took mine of the flowers. And remember relationships were extremely strained between the two men.

Sometimes I think the smallest incidents like this can reveal someone's true character. It's like someone being rude to a waiter. The king just acts like no one else matters except what he wants.

Bodies can seep liquid. That's why coffins used to have to have the joints waterproofed, so that nothing nasty would seep out on to the bearers' best Sunday suits' shoulders. Is everyone wrapped in sheets and sheets of polythene nowadays?

Ooh nasty.
I am a paralegal on criminal cases. I am sorry if my legal knowledge means that I knew some posters were spouting rubbish.

I never claimed to be an expert on embalming. I have seen seven embalmed bodies all looked healthy and well. My friend looked as if she was just lying down. My grandmother looked like she looked before she became ill.

Those personally I know who have not been happy when viewing a loved on, viewed them after two weeks, or in one case the embalmer did a very poor job.

Are you in the USA?

Yes it’s a modern miracle.

I know you have accepted you know what I am talking about when you resort to personal insults.

Frances Shand Kydd expressed sadness that she never got to see her two dead children but having looked at her interviews and her book I can’t find evidence that she was denied and the fact that she wasn’t on speaking terms with Diana meant neither Diana private secretary or her daughters asked for her to be included in the party to Paris and she also didn’t ask to come

Sorry @MadeInGrimsbyand @upinaballoon …I didn’t want to go there and was trying to be vague.

I wasn't offended in any way by your vagueness, or by any detail.

jeffgoldblum · Today 13:16

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 13:07

I am not denying that a poor embalming can leave someone not looking like themselves. I have never denied that. I have also heard of people viewing bodies after several weeks and the face did not look right.

But Diana was flown to the UK within hours of her embalming. There were five 24 hour days before her burial. And I have assumed her embalming would have been done properly. So she should have looked fine.

Her mother could have viewed Diana within 48 hours of her daughter's death.

You are missing the point again! It’s the condition of the body that determines how the body will look after embalming, yes poor embalming happens but generally they can only work with what they have and if a body has sustained damage from an accident that can make a difference…..if as the report states that it’s true that the embalming had to happen because the heat was causing rapid decomposition, that would also affect the outcome.

particularly as some of them are not correct.

There are three other sources. I do not have links to a whole book for example. You have to read it. And watch the interview.

I’m afraid I don’t believe they say what you say they do, because if they did, there would be a LOT of press reports that would be easy to source.

As a paralegal, you will understand that without a credible source that documents what you say specifically (and preferably more than one), then there just isn’t the evidence to accept your account of things.

What can be accepted from what you’ve posted and what can be found via Google is that neither Charles nor Diana’s sisters invited Frances to accompany them to Paris to identify the body and repatriate it. Frances didn’t ask to go with them. In subsequent years, she expressed regret and sorrow that she didn’t see the body. She may have strengthened her expression of this as the years went by and developed a feeling that she was ‘prevented’ from seeing the body. Who by, though, is not credibly documented. It is impossible to know for sure if she truly was prevented from seeing the body, or developed this notion over time, possibly from regret or even guilt at not insisting on going to Paris herself. This latter is pure speculation on my part, of course.

You seem very determined to paint Charles as the villain here. Why is that?

MadeInGrimsby · Today 13:20

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 13:13

Nothing bad, just sometimes the way you write and also the term "paralegal", which I know some people call themselves in the UK, but I thought it was more of a US thing.

Exactly. That’s as far as the evidence goes.

Especially when they are taking drastic measures to keep someone alive.

There are so many people who would sell a photo that they probably felt they had to close the coffin as quickly as possible. That would have been done to protect her mother and her kids. It would be terrible if that was the last image of Diana rather than the vibrant photos of her alive

She packed a bag. She was one of her daughter's two executors. Legally she should not have been cut out. She was.
Her daughter had suddenly died in traumatic circumstances.
Charles was informed of Diana's death three hours before her mother.
Charles fought against Elizabeth to use a plane from the queen's flight to bring Diana's body home. He then contacted Diana's sisters to ask them along. The plane flew out that day to fetch Diana's body.

I am not a royalist but all this bashing is making me want to get a union jack t-shirt and stand outside the palace cheering got the king

Spencer has had multiples wives, I think one made a complaint about DV, a daughter who didn't ask him to her wedding, short of money....

The king may not have been perfect but dragging up trivial now is just awful.

And he cheated on his first wife, for the first time (there were several) less than a year after their wedding, while she was pregnant with their eldest child. His wife then suffered from an eating disorder for their entire marriage. Charles Spencer really has no moral higher ground to criticise King Charles on anything.

A closed coffin can be opened again. Yes even a lead lined coffin.

Not normally up , coffins have not changed that much….however there are calls for more modern ones made from (unsuitable) different materials, unfortunately then yes something similar has to be used!! Defeats the eco concept!

One of the reports you linked to said that Frances had packed the bag when she had been told Diana was injured. She was planning to go to Paris to be by her side in hospital. She didn’t pack to go and identify the body or repatriate it.

Why did you provide those links then? Of the other three "sources" - the Daily Express interview is summarised by the BBC - Diana's mother does not say Charles prevented her from seeing Diana's remains, the Operation Paget report also does not mention anything about this and the ITV documentary is not available online that I can find.

Your sources just do not say what you want them to say.

Yes, there really is a lack of evidence in many of these matters, isn't there?

A man whose wife had just died took a flower from a bouquet and dropped it on her coffin. He prob didn’t even know whose bouquet it was.

She wasn't his wife and it wasn't his bouquet.
It's a pity ex husband Chas Windsor had to be at the burial. It was presumably just for his childrens' sake.
