Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

Why would Charles Spencer need money or care about book sales ?

He is super rich and probably worth hundreds of millions. Sales of his book don’t add anything to his fortune.

Some people want fame and attention, but I can’t seem him being bothered about that either given his background. People will have been calling him “My Lord” since he was a small child.

I believe KC to be a decent man, however I’m not so sure about the younger Prince Charles.

I think he believes it. I'm not convinced it was what was actually said.

Yes. One of the most reliable findings in psychology is people are unreliable when it comes to remembering events and conversations accurately.

That of course applies to both of them here. In the case of Spencer 1) he might believe it but be wrong; or 2) he's just made it up to sell his book.

Therefore on balance, it was probably not said.

and how much time did william and harry spend with the spencer family in the last 29 years

mumumental · Today 04:35

Charles is known to have a temper.

No. I don’t believe for one second that if he had said it, that Charles Spencer would have kept quiet about it all these years. He’d have taken every opportunity to shout it from the rooftops every chance he got. He’s said it to sell his book.

I don't know and I don't really care tbh. It's a family quarrel and should be kept private.

There's always two sides to every story like this and a whole heap of misunderstanding and miscommunication.

BobMumBobIsMyDog · Today 04:57

No, I vividly remember seeing him with Diana's sisters returning from Paris. Kc looked shell-shocked. No one would have believed that, even on day one.

Iris2020 · Today 04:58

No. I don't believe anything Charles Spencer says. He is a grim character.

cityliving99 · Today 05:03

Didn’t Spencer’s first wife say it was an utterly miserable marriage? She was wasting away and never smiled. I think he is an intolerable waste of space.

So when I first heard it, I dismissed it as someone in shock misunderstanding or misremembering.

But when I saw his interview on the BBC and the way he talked about it - I changed my mind. I do think KC said it.

He also ended his Diana eulogy with the line about her ‘never being extinguished from our minds’…which now could be seen as being a direct rebuttal or attempt to expunge what Charles said.

But most likely the "never be extinguished from our minds" was a reference to the lyrics of candle in the wind, sung at Diana's funeral "your candle burned out long before, your legend ever will".

Nottoobadreally · Today 05:18

I really don't believe Earl Spencer. I think in his grief, he has seen what he wanted. Over the phone, for instance, a trembling, shocked, voice could very much sound like a trembling, excited voice. I know when a close friend of mine died suddenly, in the aftermath, my voice (and, I noticed her mum's voice) sounded very odd. Very wild and high-pitched. It could easily be construed as excitement.

CeciliaMars · Today 06:03

I believe he wasn’t really in love with Diana - it was an arranged marriage under enormous scrutiny. But I’m not sure I believe he was hard hearted enough to be giddily elated that the mother of his two young sons had died in a horrific manner. Royal or not, I find writing tell-all books about your family a horrendous thing to do.

Orangeyoucan · Today 06:13

Charles has neither denied nor admitted it. Which makes me wonder if it’s because he can’t even remember if he said it.

Apparently Spencer says in the book that they (Diana’s family), found it so hard walking behind the coffin and not being able to show any emotion, while spectators all around them were wailing and screaming Diana’s name. I do agree with him that they should never have made those boys walk behind the coffin. Especially Harry. He was so young.

Sweetbeansandmochi · Today 06:14

@Nottoobadreally that was my first thought too - because something similar to me happened when I was told something horrific. I was very heightened which, even to me, sounded excited and I subsequently felt terrible about it. I really wasn’t. Over time, reflecting on my reaction, I decided it must be something to do with the nervous system.

moose62 · Today 06:26

We can all speculate as much as we want.
No one will ever actually know the truth.
I find it hard to believe that if KC had said it, Earl Spencer would not have mentioned it before....especially as there is no love lost between the pair.
I think the timing, the book, his favourite nephews return and the fact that like his mother KC will not refute anything 'recollections may vary' make it easy for Spencer to say anything he likes.

Kirschcherries · Today 06:30

I suspect when we get to read the whole book, like Spare, there will be other memories recalled which can be proved to be untrue and that will cast doubt on everything.

This book is CS’s truth not the truth.

MotherofPufflings · Today 06:33

I don't believe anybody can recall with any degree of accuracy a conversation from 30 years ago. There's loads of evidence that memories are inherently unreliable.

Laiste · Today 06:34

No.
I don't believe anyone in their right mind would say that to a family member. Especially someone who has spent their whole life trained to be guarded about what they say to whom.

Even if Charles hated Diana's guts at the time he wouldn't be so daft/callous/unguarded to say something like that.

Janiie · Today 06:34

This is a man who has talked openly about his booze problems, his failed marriages, we all know his dc didn't invite him to their weddings. So not a great source imo from a reliability point of view.

Like Harry he is someone who seems full of bile, bitterness and resentment which he's spewing forth in this trashy book.

Poor Diana will be turning in her grave the hurt and anguish that this will be causing William.

Laiste · Today 06:42

Good point.
What a lovely uncle Earl Spencer is!! Let's stir up shit from decades ago about my sister and her husband - what fun for her sons and grandchildren ! Let's write another book even - make a few more quid ....

pilates · Today 06:43

Who knows but I do question CS’s poor character (prolific adulterer) and why now? What is there to gain after all this time. Just pain for those close to Diana’s family. And is it a coincidence this has tied in with H&M returning to UK 🤔

mbonfield · Today 06:44

I doubt it look at his personal life it that is anything to go by.

Charles knew how very popular Diana was and for him to have said that it is unthinkable.

lifeisgoodrightnow · Today 06:50

I know people who worked at Althorp at the time. I 100% believe Charles Spencer. There’s no love for Camilla either from Diana’s family.

Joyunlimited · Today 06:55

No.
Why would I believe a serial philanderer, currently on his fourth wife?

BunnyLake · Today 06:57

Charles Spencer was full of shit at the funeral, he comes across as a very unlikeable guy (as all those ex wives and gf’s would probably agree). He was awful to his first wife, he was awful to Diana when she needed his support. I’ve never seen anything likeable or not self-serving about CS. I find it very hard to believe that KC would say those things or act ‘giddy’ in front of CS of all people.
