Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

So when I first heard it, I dismissed it as someone in shock misunderstanding or misremembering.

But when I saw his interview on the BBC and the way he talked about it - I changed my mind. I do think KC said it.

He also ended his Diana eulogy with the line about her ‘never being extinguished from our minds’…which now could be seen as being a direct rebuttal or attempt to expunge what Charles said.

I don't see any reason to trust or believe either of them.

OneLilacHedgehog · Yesterday 23:06

@Sweetbeansandmochi Charles Spencer pointed out in that interview that Charles Windsor never actually said I didn't say that. Instead he sounded guff about grief and memory.

That statement from the king made me believe Charles Spencer. If it was untrue he would have said I did not say that. He did not. He has never denied actually saying it.

I don’t believe it. Regardless of how he felt about Diana, he knew her global appeal and how adored she was.

WizdomE · Yesterday 23:08

I do not believe that King Charles said that. He is a thoughtful and very considered man and highly unlikely to have uttered any negative comments about Diana after her death. It’s just not reflective of who the man is. He is actually a very kindly human being.

I believe that people say things during difficult times that they wouldn’t day in normal circs. I believe that people hear things in different ways depending on their own emotional wellbeing / what they are experiencing at that time.

I think something was said, I don’t necessarily believe it was said in the way that is being reported. A heat of the moment comment. He was navigating a situation where his sons had lost their mother and where the country was hysterical over the death of his ex wife. Lots of hatred towards the royal family. You can see something being said within this context cant you.

I don’t see any benefit in bringing up things said almost 30 years ago. This is private family business. Just like Harry’s book. Bringing up arguments with his brother. People argue with their siblings every day.

Harry and Earl Spencer are in it for one thing - money.

I’m sure this is the image he wants to present. But only the people in his life know who he really is.

I voted yes. I think either could be true, that he is his image but it was a difficult time and he said things one wouldn’t normally say. Or he’s not his image and said something heartless to a man who had just lost his sister.

If you look at the his eulogy he ends it with ‘never be extinguished from our minds’. It seems like that is a reference to it having been said.

If he’d quoted that particular line in his eulogy to back up his claim he could believably say ‘ I made a guarded reference to it in my eulogy.’

wordler · Yesterday 23:22

At most I believe Charles S thinks that he heard these comments or memories have become clouded. I don’t think he’s out and out lying.

However the comment makes no sense in the context he’s claiming.

Did Charles say something to the extent of the weird grief orgy that was happening would calm down eventually? Possibly.

Or was it an accusation that he thought Charles S hadn’t been that much help to Diana before her death so was accusing Charles S of forgetting her soon enough?

He had two sons - one the spitting image of Diana - no one was forgetting Diana - so such a bizarre thing to say.

Sounds odd grammatically to me in such a conversation too.

I think he misheard.

No, it’s just all drama to sell a book. No one would buy it otherwise.

I think he believes it. I'm not convinced it was what was actually said.

This, I think. Though why he wants to rake it all over again I dont know. Not exactly helping anyone and true or not it must be very hurtful to their sons.

King Charles - A thoughtful, considerate and kind man?

Paul Burrell, the Butler of Prince Charles said that Prince Charles was demanding, bad tempered and very impatient. He wrote that Charles called him into the dining room and shouted at him and threw a book at him.

You might say that an employee's memories of their boss can be influenced by them being their boss, but Paul burrell also worked for the queen. He described the queen as being very kind and patient.

I think its incredibly fortuitous timing that he’s published this book just as he finalises the divorce from his third wife. No one apart from a handful of toffs would even know who Charles Spencer was if his sister hadn’t married who she did.

This. It's all nonsense, and I don't believe a word. According to the poll, and many comments, most people think the same. Charles never said it!

I bet @OneLilacHedgehog didn't expect this! The majority of posters (over 70%) believe King Charles!

Just out of interest what did Paul Burrell have to say about Andrew. ?

I actually know people who’ve worked for both Andrew and Charles and actually they hold Charles in pretty high regard.

CherryKerry · Yesterday 23:42

All of this is obviously just my opinion....

I suspect something was said in anger.

Earl Spencer (ES) openly admits he was having a go at the now King Charles (KC). KC had already had discussions regarding the funeral and if the boys wanted to walk behind the coffin, ultimately they agreed to do it, they weren't forced. It was none of ES business and definitely not for him to dictate what his nephews should do especially as he wasn't particularly close to Diana or the boys. If my children were going through a horrendous bereavement I would be very quick to tell my BIL to butt out if he stuck his nose in.

My suspicion is KC, who was going through the most stressful time of his life, exhausted and devastated for his children etc ended up having a heated argument with ES and both of them said things they shouldn't in the heat of the moment.

If he did say Diana would soon be forgotten about, I would imagine he meant the media frenzy and all the crazy people going bonkers with grief over someone they've never met. I don't think he would think her family would forget her.

It's a while since I read that book, I don't remember Paul Burrell writing much about Prince Andrew as he didn't work for him. Paul Burrell worked as a butler for the Queen, then Paul worked for charles and Diana.

I remember that Paul Burell wrote that all the palace staff referred to Andrew as 'the favourite son' as they all thought that Andrew was the queens favourite son

That's interesting. What do the people you know who worked for Andrew - think about Andrew

I think he looked grim faced because he thought everyone would blame him/ he was going to get bad press again.

Paul Burrell (Diana's butler) wrote in his book that when diana died, prince Charles rang him and said 'everyone is going to blame me aren't they'

Edited

Yes. I too think that is why he was grim faced.
