Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

Why can't he? Why did it take 30 years for him to come up with this one? Is it because he's only just made it up in order to make money?

What are his finances like. Does anyone know if he has money or if he is broke? I can't see much about it online

I think he looked grim faced because he thought everyone would blame him/ he was going to get bad press again.

Paul Burrell (Diana's butler) wrote in his book that when diana died, prince Charles rang him and said 'everyone is going to blame me aren't they'

Edited

He could be feeling plenty of grief and still say this in the course of that conversation.

At the time Charles never appeared anything either than very shocked and grieving. He's not that good an actor so no, I don't believe Spencer's version. It's fairly obvious that he has his own agenda, and the fact that he's still trying to make money out of his deceased sister is deeply distasteful.

This is a good point. Regardless of whether you like KC or not, no one could accuse him of being the type to play to the crowd. He is consistently authentic in character; not always to his credit. His state of shock following Diana's death was palpable. Giddy is simply not a state you could imagine KC being in, in any circumstance at any time!

I believe it too.

And he's completely self centered.

At the time it was plain that actually he was centred on his grieving children and on protecting them, apart from his own grief. By all contemporaneous accounts, he and Diana had actually been getting on pretty well at that point. It just isn't credible that he would have said what Spencer claims he said. On the other hand, it's easy to imagine Spencer saying precisely this about his exes if they died, given his attitude towards them, so maybe it's just wishful thinking on his part.

Yes he could. All the 'he said she said' don't make me feel much different about prince Charles or early Spencer to be honest. We can't know exactly what happens.

I always thought that prince Charles was slightly cruel and selfish. But many people are.

He's not so bad as to be involved in huge scandal or to be criminally bad so thats just how it is.

After four failed marriages, and with all the expenses of Althorp, they're not good.

How was he centred on his grieving children when Prince Harry wrote in his book that he was expected to move on two weeks after his mothers death, and no one mentioned her again.

Harry wrote that this led to him having huge trauma over his mothers death for many many years

King Charles - A thoughtful, considerate and kind man?

Paul Burrell, the Butler of Prince Charles said that Prince Charles was demanding, bad tempered and very impatient. He wrote that Charles called him into the dining room and shouted at him and threw a book at him.

You might say that an employee's memories of their boss can be influenced by them being their boss, but Paul burrell also worked for the queen. He described the queen as being very kind and patient.

Paul Burrell is generally known as an opportunist who repeatedly tried to monetise his former role as Princess Diana’s butler. For a long time there was s succession of "new" sensational details or emotional revelations whenever he was feeling a bit skint.

So I'd take all this with a large pinch of salt; alternatively, maybe if Charles threw things at him he thoroughly deserved it. The fact that he speaks well of the queen simply reflects the fact that he knows his readership wouldn't accept anything else.

I never think that writing a book is a bad thing, to be honest. If he's an oppurtunist, who made money from writing a book, then so is prince Harry who has made money from a book.

Come off it, it's established that "Spare" is full of lies. Remember that vivid account of how Harry was told at school of his grandmother's death, with a whole sob story about how dreadful it was that he was given the news with no support? It's just a tad unfortunate that there was masses of contemporary evidence that actually it happened during the school holidays when he was with his father.

Absolutely. I definitely wouldn't disagree with you about Harry.

After four failed marriages, and with all the expenses of Althorp, they're not good.

I mentioned upthread that he's sold off land recently so could be asset rich but cash poor. But having looked it up, he sold 310 acres from Altorp in July and got 60million for it! So despite another divorce how bad could his cash flow be?

Earl Spencer sells 310 acres for homes after fly-tipping nightmare

Lampzade · Today 01:43

Yes, I do believe that KC said this . As to whether he was ‘ giddy or elated’ I am not quite sure . That may have been Earl Spencer’s interpretation
Obviously , we were not there, but I would have thought that KC was simply referring to the fact that she would be forgotten in the sense that people die , there is an outpouring of grief and then people get on with their lives .However, I do think that Princess Diana was a thorn in KC’s side and made it more difficult for him to publicly conduct a relationship with Camilla
I think both men are highly flawed individuals and terrible husbands /fathers
Don’t have time for either of them tbh

Ohdearnotthisagain · Today 01:59

Charles Spencer is a deeply flawed individual, the product of an awful childhood (like Diana). He also has three failed marriages, children with no contact, and a book to sell. No, I don’t believe him.

askmenow · Today 02:01

No! He’s a whining misogynist twat of whom 4 wives are well rid. He’s earning to pay off the latest sufferer.
More fool anyone who pays him any notice.

Crwysmam · Today 02:11

The Royal family have never commented on anything written about them until this. Even Harry’s sensational memoir was treated with silence. It does seem odd that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted the first official comment.

I found his eulogy at Diana's funeral uncomfortable, a funeral is never the place to air your personal thoughts or point the finger. Dianna knew full well that once out of the firm she could say whatever she liked and the firm would never deny or confirm. But I think that Charles S assumed he could do the same. I wouldn’t be surprised if William has taken the lead on this one after Harry’s outburst. Charles S is his uncle and this may be a glimpse of how he will deal with potential memoirs in the future.

MeghanAndTheSeals · Today 02:40

Do I think KC3 has got a number of things wrong in life - yes
Do I think KC3 said those words - no
Do I think CS has had very difficult circumstances in his life - yes
Do I believe CS - no

CS is not in a position to throw stones. I’d be very interested to hear what his THREE ex wives think of him, let alone the children who have effectively gone NC with him. I gather there is childhood trauma there, and that is bloody awful, but it can’t be ignored that this is then dealt outwards to others. Who will therefore be feeling their own trauma. It’s an awful cycle.

This book is not about his sister, it’s about him. It will do nothing for her memory. Let alone for her sons.

Onthemaintrunkline · Today 02:46

Charles has been surrounded by sycophants since day one, of course Courtiers are going to deny/rearrange/window dress, what he said, hells bells he’s the King🙄. I’ve always felt KC was a two-faced, self-indulgent, temperamental lying individual. That’s why Camilla suits him so well, she panders, agrees, soothes his fevered brow.

Yes I do believe Charles Spencer.

Girlking · Today 02:48

Paquitavariation · Yesterday 22:18

No. I don’t believe for one second that if he had said it, that Charles Spencer would have kept quiet about it all these years. He’d have taken every opportunity to shout it from the rooftops every chance he got. He’s said it to sell his book.

This ☝🏻

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · Today 03:04

Daygloboo · Yesterday 23:45

Oh do you know him.

Do you? Persoanlly and not through gossip or a book written by a drunken old man who has never done a thing in his life except spend money, treat his wives like crap and cheat on them, and refuse to let his sister come back to the family home to get sorted and rest? Or a book written by the spoiled son who wore a Nazi uniform and then blamed everyone else but himself for wearing it?

I don't know King Charles, so I haven't a clue if he's a good man, but I certainly wouldn't go by people trying to make a buck off denigrating him either.

Phelicity · Today 03:11

I wonder if the context of the conversation was actually the likely long-term impact of Diana’s death on her sons - the unrealistic assertion that they would soon forget her? I can imagine that from Charles at the time, and we know Spencer was critical of the way the boys were exposed to public scrutiny at the funeral.

MarchionessVonSausage · Today 03:16

As for the thinly veiled allegation that KC had a sexual relationship with his valet... that is pure shit stirring.

Yes Michael Fawcett (aka Fawcett the Fence or Flog-it Fawcett) was well trusted by CW when he was PoW. And yes, perhaps Diana was pissed off that her husband was so reliant on him whilst not caring much for.

But suggesting that KC3 is bisexual? What on earth is CS thinking & what does he hope to achieve with that??

ETA- sorry if this is derailing the topic but I can't keep up with all the threads

ENormaStitts · Today 03:37

No one other than Spencer and Charles know what was in that conversation, and that's assuming they can remember what they said nearly 30 years ago.
So Spencer could make anything up, perhaps to increase sales of his book.

  • I 100% believe he would say something like that.
