Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

OP posts:
bananaobama · Today 06:58

Writing the book was an awful move. If he needs the money, sell a painting or go on Strictly

LBFseBrom · Today 07:04

There would be no reason for him to lie but I do think it is mean to repeat something that was said in.a phone call at a time when feelings were running high.

I'm pretty sure Charles wouldn't have meant it.

Unfortunately it is the sort of thing people latch on to. They home in on one sentence and practically disregard the rest of the book.

I’m sure this is the image he wants to present. But only the people in his life know who he really is.

I voted yes. I think either could be true, that he is his image but it was a difficult time and he said things one wouldn’t normally say. Or he’s not his image and said something heartless to a man who had just lost his sister.

But only the people in his life know who he really is.

And yet here everyone is, on a thread speculating about who said what and who believes what. Pointless.

the fact is, Charles Spencer has been married several times and must be paying a lot of money in alimony to his various ex's so it's a question of "he would say that, wouldn't he" if it means he gets a few million to continue with the upkeep of the family pile (Althorp Estate, where Diana is buried).

Percythepollingstationcat · Today 07:12

I am puzzled as to why Earl Spencer has brought all this up 30+ years later ? It seems to me that something has happened to make him feel he needs to write a "tell-all" book. Maybe something more is going to come out later?
It's not as if he's short of a bob or two is it?

WingnutSOS · Today 07:15

Don’t believe Spencer at all. This is a cynical last grab at some cash off Diana’s memory. this is the guy who sells signed copies of the funeral eulogy at his stately pile. Grim.

The Markles will punt out her memory next in a Netflix doc.

I feel for William who has stated in the past that he would like his memory to be quietly and privately respected. His brother and uncle actively disrespect his wishes.

MrsLeonFarrell · Today 07:16

No. I do believe they had a row full of grief and anger and I do believe there were tensions between the families over the funeral. I do not believe Charles S is remembering with perfect accuracy what Charles said and I believe he is probably embroidering the actual words that were said. I'm not sure whether he is doing that deliberately though, it is more likely his memory has been affected by the grief and anger he has carried through the years. So we are left with two men who both believe their truth.

Wadsworthy · Today 07:17

They’re both bounders, but I find it quite credible that Charles Windsor would have said that.

Most of his public statements sound self-obsessed, particularly about his own status. And he was carrying on an adulterous affair with a married woman for the whole time of his marriage. While seeing fit to lecture us - people he sees as beneath him - on how we should live.

Tvradiorentals · Today 07:17

I don’t think the king’s statement did him any favours. It was highly unusual for him to make any response to Spencer’s accusation. So, I think if he was going to comment it should have been an unequivocal denial that he’d said it. Instead, what he said was just waffle. His statement sounded like it came from the same “recollections may vary” palace script writing team .

TokyoSushi · Today 07:20

I don’t think it’s impossible, Charles Windsor seemed to be a very different person back then and it had been a fraught few years. We’ll never know though.

SweetcornFritter · Today 07:21

Spencer has apparently sold some land recently to the tune of £60m so I don’t think he wrote the book for the money. He appeared entirely sincere in the interview with Laura Kuensberg. I believe he is being truthful.

Ellie1015 · Today 07:22

Maybe he thought it who knows (Personally think unlikely).
He would be stupid to say it out loud to anyone, especially her brother. It just isnt plausible for me.

Charles Spencer would not be the first to lie in an interview with Laura Kuennsberg and not be challenged enough. Several members of Reform and the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson come to mind.

Richard Kay addressed this last night when he was interviewed during Palace Confidential:

~it’s twenty-nine years since Diana died and many commentators and journalists will be marking the 30th anniversary with a book, so CS wanted to speak up first from
Diana’s and his own family’s perspective.

~ a lot of the main players have died, such as his godmother the late QE2, Prince Philip, and most importantly Robert Fellowes who was in a very difficult position married to CS’s sister and also a senior courtier to the late QE2 , so he could write more freely and not cause them or his sister distress.

~CS has a sense that time is running out and both of his parents didn’t make it to seventy, and if not this year, when?

~ nearly thirty years on he feels able to address what has been a simmering feud between him and King Charles and, as the saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold.

HareBrewery · Today 07:28

I think this has been timed to perfection to make the maximum amount of money and inflict the maximum amount of damage on Charles before he dies.

Once William is King this media stunt would not have worked as well.

I think it will actually blow up in Spencer's face in the long term and he'll be on the next marriage soon enough.

He's doing a Harry and capitalising off Diana's death. It's quite sickening how men can use her in death as she was used and abused in life.

Whether it is true or not, we'll never know.

The more interesting question is why now?

TallSturdyGirls · Today 07:29

Flufffluff11 · Yesterday 22:20

Yes they're not worse than a lot of families. I've seen people in my own family be very cold and unemotiobal after people died.

They are definitely on the lowest rung of families I know. So msny affairs, marryimg a virgim for apperances and then continously shagging a married woman, father and son not speaking, pervert uncle involved in sex trafficking and his mum paying off the victims.

Jadedmoorhen · Today 07:29

MellowSubmarine · Yesterday 22:28

I believed it more before reading that Spencer also said that Charles sounded “giddily elated” & “like a lottery winner” in the first phone call they had, just hours after she died - a phone call where Charles told him he’d woken William and Harry up to tell them their mother died.
He sounded elated in a conversation involving talking about telling his sons their mother died?? I don’t think that’s credible. And I doubt his other claims more because of it.

This

perhaps his voice sounded weird and squeaky due to grief/stress - imagine having to have that conversation with your children. To interpret it as excitement/happiness under the circumstances is crazy, and yes, undermines CS credibility

Agree, I think why now might be his finances.

None of that explains or justifies the reason he would inflict more pain on his nephews at this moment in time.

It doesn't justify doing it publicly. He could have done it privately.

I don't think he answered that question honestly.

Sound like publicist spin.

I'm not a royalist but there is something deeply distasteful about doing this now. It's quite vile to do this to a man battling cancer in such a public facing role.

Craftysue · Yesterday 22:23

I just don't know why he's waited for nearly 30 years to announce it. I've got no idea if it's true or not

He has waited 30 years for maximum impact - after Charles became king and long enough after Elizabeth passing and the cancer announcement for sympathy to be waning.

TallSturdyGirls · Today 07:34

Portakalkedi · Yesterday 22:31

No, and even if he thought along those lines I would say he is too well bred to actually say it, and to the brother? Who on earth would say something like that?Sounds like made-up bollocks and a moneygrabbing exercise, clearly inspired by his twat of a nephew Harry. No doubt lots of chat shows, book signings and interviews to follow. Doesn't this guy have enough money (by inheritance, not by actual work or intelligence, again like Harry)?

The same well bred man that told the woman he was having an affair with he wanted to be her tampax. Sure he never says anything vile.

Longtimelurker1980 · Today 07:34

PurpleLovecats · Yesterday 22:18

Yes I think he might have said it in the heat of the moment.

Do I really care though? Not hugely. The royals are just another family with scandals and extra marital affairs. At that time, Charles and Diana were toxic with regards to one another. I imagine that didn’t disappear immediately with her death.

I think this is the point. Remember Diana wasn’t his first choice of wife and had broken all royal traditions by going on TV and giving an emotional, public interview laying the royal family bare. Washing dirty linen in public is distasteful for anyone but I can imagine it was devastating for the royal family. Especially given that she had small children at the time.

so much as I (as a non royalist) can see she did great things with her life, and was dealt a tough hand in marriage, I don’t think she behaved particularly maturely and I think any partner and family would be resentful, let alone the royals whose motto is never complain never explain. None of us should be judged by things we say in the heat of the moment.

I think Charles has found his feet with Camilla and they seem happy and contribute to society in all sorts of ways. If he did say that 30 years ago, genuinely - who cares?

ANNotherWriter · Today 07:36

No.

His behaviour is disgusting.

The King is still being treated for cancer, is clearly not well, and this plus Harry is not going to do him any good at all.

Why now after 30 years did CS do this?
To make money. That's all. To run the heating at Althorp no doubt.

He's a nasty man- onto his 4th marriage - a string of failed relaltionships, and clearly has issues.

His interview reminded me of the one with Andrew.

Yes why would you hurt your nephews for a dime. I think the line is being used for maximum publicity anyway.

This.

Pure spin. Utterly venomous. Charles Spencer is an awful man who treated his wives appallingly. He might help sell a few extra copies of the Daily Mail but I can't see anyone shelling out for his book.

You can surely see making a smutty innuendo about a tampon in what was supposed to be a private conversation, which was hacked, is in a different league to what CS is supposed to recall?

Only one person here is vile and it's not the King.
