This article by Tom Peck, the Times parliamentary sketch writer, is quite the kebabing. It’s not as entertaining as the Kevin Maher piece, but it’s piercing in breaking down the claims in the book and drawing together the backstabbing relatives. This is his take on Harry’s court cases.

Highly paid lawyers have gone through thousands of stories over a more than 20-year period, one by one by one. I’ve personally sat in all the court rooms in question, and heard them all. I can’t think of any that were quite as outrageous, as poorly sourced or as journalistically unprofessional as Spencer’s world exclusive about the King and his valet, though no doubt it’ll be, as we in the media like to say, “good for trade”.

Earl Spencer’s swan song: more blast than lament, or proof

Well, err, erm, I’m reporting, every word in this book, I report exactly as I saw and felt it at the time,” said Spencer, sounding less like an eminent historian and more like a fourth former trying to explain away the absence of his homework.

He and Harry are both fond of "their" truth.

Surely if what he is claiming is exactly what was said Richard Kay wouldn't give this vague explanation:

"He said they’d had a ‘furious row’. It was ‘about the boys’, but he was reluctant to go further. Cuttingly he added: ‘He has been utterly pathetic'"

Surely the family members he told at the time would come forward and confirm his words.

If he actually told Harry and William about it, Harry at least would have put it into the public domain before now.

Though as that article says, Charles S has done proper historical work and should know the difference. Harry seems less well informed, let's say

Yes, Spencer should know better than to present conjecture and rumour as fact.

BBC news report says 2nd October is the deadline for launching an appeal. So not too long now.

Do we know when the next communication from the Sentebale court case is due?

Yes I believe that H&M are collaborating with CS to create a documentary. Not sure if it’s just access to artefacts, Althorpe and allegations - in response for them to remain tight lipped or even positive about the book. I doubt CS was stupid enough to tell them the contents ahead of publication.

Is CS done now on the media rounds? It seems he hit the wrong notes and tone. When is the full book due out - I had hoped that CS having recently been thru therapy would be able to reflect and document Diana’s life thru a trauma-informed lens as their childhood was so emotionally bleak. He does have a unique perspective on her character from their dreadful childhood. I can imagine that his relationship with KC then and now was fractious throughout and then volatile at the time or the death - his speech indicated his ire. Even if KC did say something careless privately in the moment I think the general public won’t care or give it him a pass. The giddy comment is only opinion and there is evidence from the time to the contrary.

I think the ball is in H&M court right now about how they show allegiance - a dignified silence might be enough - a collaboration with CS will be disastrous for them from a public perspective as well as a personal private family perspective as well as within then social set they want to be accepted into. No one wants shit stirring, high conflict drama queens around because it’s a ‘when’ not ‘if’ you will be the target in their disruptive behaviours.

The swan though - that sealed the chuckling nasty witch image - she thought she was clever, subtle and smug - but it’s just revealed her to be a vicious, vengeful, bully - As Ever. I wonder if PH knew she would do this?

JSMill · 21/09/2026 08:21

I heard on the radio last night that CS has said there are other things he could have put in the book about KC but he left them out to protect him. Did H say similar about Spare?

Even if he said more to RK at the time it doesn't make the words he has claimed KC said true does it?

Anyone can have a call that leaves them upset & angry & exaggerate or even lie almost immediately about what was said.

Yes, and he said in the interview that he was in Cape Town, alone in the house with 4 young children, there was confusion and chaos. We don't know, 29 years on, what was said. He's admitted to LK that hid interpretation was "a possibility" rather than a fact.

Well well. Someone on X has discovered that Meghan cosied up to Victoria Lockwood whilst they were in South Africa on the tour.

I hadn't realised/remembered that VL attended their wedding, accompanied by various of the children, with ES and his third wife attending separately. Harry appears to have maintained contact with the Spencer cousins, and VL despite them living in South Africa, perhaps there were visits on some of his trips there. All very nice back in the day before he turned into the toxic person he is nowadays. So I guess the introduction would have come from him and be innocent enough. However one can't help feeling that when Meghan seeks out a friendship there's a reason. The interesting thing about that article is the comments. Many readers were onto her already, back then in 2019.

Adding picture from the wedding day.
I wonder how Louis’ relationship is with ES - he’s the heir, so more reason to have regular contact I would think.

Blimey shamed some of those comments are spot on! And they were posted a year before the Freedom Flight!!

PlotTwistPending · 21/09/2026 09:44

Interestingly a comment pointed out that CS was not invited to HaMs kids’ christenings. So I checked!!

Archie’s christening (July 2019): Charles Spencer was not there. Diana’s sisters, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, attended, but Charles Spencer did not. Contemporary reports said he wasn’t invited.

Lilbet’s christening (March 2023): There is no reliable evidence that Charles Spencer attended either. The small California ceremony had about 20–30 guests. Diana’s sisters were reported to have attended, along with Doria Ragland and Tyler Perry, but Charles Spencer isn’t reported among the guests.

So much for a close relationship then!!

HAM are so transactional. This new "closeness" is mutually beneficial. HAM need to build up a network in UK. Once that is done, CS will be dumped.

I get the sentiment, @RepercussionsMayVary, but would say the days of deciding if they're capable of any loyalty or discretion are gone

It must surely be obvious to anyone with sense that any normal behaviour is purely temporary and designed to get whatever's wanted at the time, then quickly replaced by spite if it doesn't happen

As said before I guess monarchists need to hope William will be capable of firmer action than his father, but time will tell

They won't speak out. HAM do not play the long game. They need to merch off Diana while in UK. Documentary in the pipeline and no doubt this is in conjunction with CS. HAM will get the oxygen they need from this but any RF adjacency will be absolutely finished. If KC goes soft on them, I do think William will take a firm hand.

I’ve briefly heard a discussion about them on LBC and someone ringing up about how they need security and how in danger they are blah blah.

I wonder if publicly they were offered round the clock security, but, they have to live on a royal property, shut their mouths, stop doing fake royal visits, can’t fly around the world as they want etc…

In danger from what / who? I would agree they need protection from each other

I’m not sure he is necessarily unwell as such. He seems to be concerned that he will pop off soon because his parents did. Mind you my FiL kept saying that and he is still going strong at 89 😆

The interesting thing about that article is the comments. Many readers were onto her already, back then in 2019.

It was on the S Africa trip in Sept/Oct 2019 that she did the Tom Bradby interview - 'not many people have asked if I'm OK' - which was what I think made people begin to revise their opinion of her.

Long before then there was a stream of threads on here where many posters had come to the same conclusion. Jeff will remember them. We were a community of Penguins in those days.

There were some very unpleasant posters who made it their mission to shut down discussion and get individuals banned and threads deleted. All because a few perceptive posters saw then what many more are seeing now.

ShamedBySiri · 21/09/2026 11:17

I listened to this discussion about security and the cost of it on the Daily T podcast with Camilla Tominey and Victoria Ward.

"Paul Lewis, who has run security operations for royal and high-net-worth individuals for more than 20 years, explains the logistics and eye-watering cost of the security the Duke and Duchess would need as both private citizens and high-profile members of the Royal family."

He talks about the need to scope the school trip every morning before leaving, to change the route and all sorts of other logistics - the sort of level that might be necessary if you are Donald Trump or Putin, attracting lots of attempts on your life and/or the lives of your loved ones. Really this sort of level of protection isn't in anyway sustainable for attempting to bring some normality to the lives of young children. And needless to say the cost is off the scale. He agrees later on that the main risk these days is fixated lone wolves, (which I believe Harry has mentioned), the sort no one knows about until they do something as happened to poor Anne Widdecombe. I'm not sure what the answer is but keeping your whereabouts secret would be a good start.

I think the guy rather undermines himself towards the end by becoming a bit boastful talking about some of his past cases and one he was embarking on later that day. 🙄

He recently celebrated a year off alcohol so that probably has something to do with his weight loss.
