William must be in bits, he does such a good job of doing his public visits and smiling and showing every sign of enjoying himself (and Catherine) but there must be simmering rage inside. It has occurred to me that with George just starting at Eton, and boarding, being away from home, William is now in the same position as Diana was when bad news came out and she rushed down to Eton to explain it all to William. Now poor William must be in the position that he has had to do the same for George.

It's utterly unforgivable.

I just hope the Wales family, (and KC & C) are able to put it out of their minds and get out for a long walk and a happy family day.

In contrast this is The Guardian's take on the King's statement. I agree it wasnt the master stroke that reflections may vary was, but they are countering more far reaching claims. Better to do one statement that isn't perfect than get sucked into tit for tat on each line.

Charles’s rebuttal of Earl Spencer’s claim about Diana offers rare glimpse into palace thinking https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/sep/17/charles-earl-spencer-diana-royal-statements?CMP=share_btn_url

I think the reaction was too quick. The palace took a couple of days to release the 'recollections may vary' comment.

Had Charles R waited, he might already have seen come of the pushback against Charles S's excerpts, especially given the inaccuracies and the contradictions with previous recorded statements.

I do see that the comment is general enough to cover anything in the book, so there probably won't be another.

PlotTwistPending · 20/09/2026 11:13

@ThedomYou can also hire the Royal Marine Band who perform at public concerts, charity events and official national ceremonies, rather than private individual celebrations. As a side, I have booked them for a charity event, and they were amazing!

Wonder if PH asked them and was politely told to fuck off!! Given his history with them!

Diana did the Bashir interview two months after William started at Eton. He watched it in his housemaster's study.

At this point i don't see it causing the damage Spencer is obviously hoping for.

I've skipped over a few pages.

Breaking news on the BBC, Charles S is saying Harry and Meghan are being treated like Diana by the media. It's beginning to seem less like a serious biography and more like a concerted campaign in which he is clearly Team Sussex rather than Team Truth. The whole focus on Harry in the funeral narrative now makes me sense. He is undermining his credibility.

BBC News - Harry and Meghan's media treatment echoes what happened to Diana, Earl Spencer tells BBC
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwj3d7zrgvk1o

Dear god that's straight out of Harry's own playbook: "I'm afraid of history repeating itself" Hmm

Though a ghastly man I've always believed this doesn't necessarily mean everything he says is wrong, but it really is starting to look like a concerted campaign, and frankly they both must be mad to choose the other

Also a book about your distant uncle attacking a much loved Grand parent isn't the same as your mum accusing your dad of adultery on camera.

There is obviously some truth in his book, but even if every word was 100% accurate, which it obviously isn't, i doubt that Charles S will achieve whatever it is he was hoping too. Too much water under the bridge, too much known already.

The book Charles Spencer has written about Diana and Charles marriage is called Swan Song.

Meghan added a Swan emoji it’s a totally irrelevant text, it’s another one of her cryptic messages, clearly showing her and Harry’s alliance and support for CS book.

Edited

Not that cryptic really though.

AliceandOscar · 20/09/2026 11:27

Having watched the funeral, one thing that stuck out to me was when they passed thought Horseguards Parade and disappeared for a min or so, was KC putting his arm around H’s shoulders. I notice in the clip published in the DM today about the boys walking, CS managed to make it all about him and nothing about the support KC offered and I bet that H won’t be mentioning it either.

Thedom · 20/09/2026 11:32

Reading Richard Kay’s article this jumped out at me, remind you of anyone, does this explain the ‘my husbands father, ‘my husband’s brother’

“She relayed her bitterness at what she once described as her ‘inhuman’ treatment from what she always scornfully called ‘my husband’s family’.

bluegreygreen · 20/09/2026 11:32

The vast majority of comments I've seen online seem to be critical of Charles S - apart from the obvious Sussex supporters.
The line for them is that Charles S is the only person who has truly supported Harry.

One exception who seems to be swallowing everything from Charles S is Shauna (TheVintageRead).
She is posting multiple (several times/hr) attacks on Charles R on TwiX.
I stopped checking her stuff some time ago (when she took up with Lownie) so don't know if this is new since the book.

That’s fascinating, I looked it up because I found it hard to believe they can be hired privately and it’s true

“Yes, you can hire the Band of the Irish Guards (or small ensembles from it) for private and commercial events, provided the booking does not conflict with their official royal and state duties”

Invictus have a lot to answer for !

That's the band, Thedom, but if you can hire some I suppose it's not beyond the bounds of possibility to hire others

It interests me that this event happened after the letter went out about consulting the palace if those approached wanted to check on what would be appropriate re H&M. Did they do that, I wonder, and was the saluting and so forth the result?

Finally just wanted to add it's so goood to hear you're on the mend, @BigWillyLittleTodger and @AristocraticAutumnCrowFight Flowers

That’s a salient point Bluegreygreen. How awful must that have been? I also think William must have been at school for some of the many other tabloid revelations, phone recordings etc. Contrasted with Harry, who although only just over 2 years younger, was 3 school years behind and didn’t start at Eton until a year after Diana’s death, when Saint Diana was the established narrative. It doesn’t excuse Harry’s behaviour, but I can see why he perhaps has a different perspective to his brother.

Karma2023 · 20/09/2026 11:36

Heat not a furnace for your foe so hot / That it do singe yourself.

HAM & CS should have learnt this.

Would CS have been able to veto any selection of the publisher serialisation? Would CS have been negotiating this deal before the ANL judgement? Perhaps CS is donating his royalties to pay Harry's legal bill to the Daily Mail 😀

Harry & CS are just hypocrites, taking money from the press whilst complaining of press intrusion. CS has continually sold assets from the family estate since he inheirted it and Diana memory was just seen by him as another asset to flog.

Thedom · 20/09/2026 11:41

The Richard Kay article also levels the closeness between Diana and her brother, Charles had to quiz a Daily Mail journalist about Diana and Dodi, what was their relationship like, what was Dodi like, was she in love. Diana had given him no insight into her private life, he knew nothing.

Charles himself has said he saw Diana on average 6 times per year, (100 times in 15years) one of, those was when they crossed paths for a few minutes at an event a month or two before she died. They wrote letters to each other, pretty formal too, going by ones which have been made public, he wanted to charge his sister rent.

If you look at it dispassionately they were not that close at all by most standards.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/09/2026 11:46

If people lose support for the RF then that's them too

I've no problem with the RF losing support, @fridaynightzzz, though I'd rather it was on the basis of what they actually do than unprovable claims, but since H&M now seem in manic crash and burn mode I doubt they've thought of this

Either way they enjoy no respect, so can really only rely on notoriety and hope that still keeps the money coming in, and I'm thinking of the "400 pages" which allegedly didn't make it into the final version of Spare

Are we going to see a second version ... ?

I expect it was ready to go. There was every reason to think CS would have a go at KC3 in some way or another, so a generic statement was prepped.

UncleColm · 20/09/2026 11:53

The way that CS is talking about Harry echoes the 'concerns' Harry expressed about William's children.

My mother died when I was 8... I have a large family and it effected everyone differently. I would absolutely hate if an Uncle said that I was more mature or composed than others or whatever. Nobody has a right to comment or judge on someone else's grief....it's ignorant in the extreme.

heatdome · 20/09/2026 11:53

On the one hand I think if CS really is Team Sussex then surely he’s in touch with Harry and HAM would have known about the book and possibly its contents months ago, so if they were really co-ordinating why was their exit and arrival such a mess if they had months or even a year to plan? Why the last-minute entry into schools? Then I remember that even if this was planned at the end of the day they’re still HAM so…

In a way I’m glad Meghan’s stayed away from Harry’s recent events. I think Harry needs to know he is also unpopular and it’s not just Meghan. He can’t say oh it’s misogyny, it’s just racism as to why it’s not going down well.

Yes, it was the members of the Irish Guards band who Harry was photographed with. They were playing as the guests arrived.

notimagain · 20/09/2026 12:02

Band booked, band played...no mystery there.

The saluting has been covered by somebody upthread who has access to what looks like the current drill manual - H is still a member of the Royal Family, so he gets a salute, the letter didn't change anything with regard to that.

Karma2023 · 20/09/2026 12:02

Very true. He will struggle to claim any victim status as a white, highly privileged man. H does look dire these days, he doesn't look professional or remotely attractive and he must have previously benefitted from the RF image team.

Do we believe the rumors M has taken herself back to the USA?
