King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

seems fair enough.
is strange though how they are treated differently from other non working royals.

How so?

This is ridiculous. It's an administrative clarification that they continue not to be working members of the royal family.

It's not some kind of gotcha to Harry and Meghan, it's been issued so that people stop asking the royal family about them

I don't think it's a gotcha but I do believe that is a reminder, now that the Sussexes are resident in the UK, about the diffrerence between a working and a non working royal. In the past few months Harry is on record as saying he is still a working royal (defined as representing the King so he is incorrect) and has also criticised His Majesty's judiciary on several occasions whilst claiming he is the victim of an "establishment stitch up".

It is obvious that it was felt necessary to give clarification of their status and to give organisations who need guidance some where official to go. It isn't anything new, just a reminder of what was decided at the Sandringham Summit in 2020.

Why do they have to keep a low profile?

They can do what they like, much the same as the rest of us.

If KC or PoW wants to take his title away, he can still do what he likes, but will be known as X formerly known as Prince.

I've read the full press release and though it's nothing 'new', I think the clarification speaks volumes.

There have been lots of articles I've seen suggesting or hinting/implying Harry would be back in with RF in some form - so I think this just clarifies again the agreed position.

Found it:

The King's letter in full:
Following the decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to relocate to the UK, we have received a number of requests for Guidance. To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared.

It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family. This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.

It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.

Any specific questions from official and State organisations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.

All correspondence and administrative questions relating to the couple should be sent directly to their office, which will continue to operate separately from The Royal Household.

The Right Honourable The Lord Benyon GCVO

So what's wrong with that? Nothing. Sums it up perfectly.

No-one has any reason to think that H and M will be put out by this - why would they? - except in the minds of those who think they are able to read their minds.

No-one has any sane reason to be reading the DM which will put their own spin on everything, even something as clear and neutral as this statement.

SereneFinch · 07/09/2026 16:48

I don’t think it means anything other than to clarify that the position hasn’t changed. I don’t actually think anyone was suggesting it would other than malicious newspaper wags who want to stir things up so they can write stories for clicks.

LaMarschallin · 07/09/2026 16:49

So, this is nothing merely a clarification of the Sandringham Agreement, sent out in conjunction with the Sussexes to a few trashy news sources, not news at all, absolutely no reason why the King sent it out and it's not an order from him anyway, just a tiny bit of admin...

Could be summarised as:
Stop talking about it - I don't like hearing it.

AprilMizzel · 07/09/2026 16:53

BBC article https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20lpevv7jlo

It has been sent to Prince Harry's team and to the government, military and Lord Lieutenants, according to Palace sources.
Lord Lieutenants and government staff are involved in royal visits and engagements - and this letter makes clear that any engagements carried out by the Sussexes will be in a private capacity and not representing the Royal Family.

...

The King's message says that any questions from organisations about the reception to be given to the Sussexes, "particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace".

There have been unresolved disputes about Prince Harry and Meghan's security in the UK and the letter spells out: "Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant police authorities."
Palace sources have suggested it was better to make the letter public, in a spirit of transparency, rather than risk it emerging in leaks.

The reporting does make it sound much more pointed - sending it to PH team as well - and the making it public from the off rather than having leaks also seems pointed.

Prince Harry and Meghan

Prince Harry and Meghan not working royals, says King

The letter has been sent to Prince Harry's team, the government, military and Lord Lieutenants, Palace sources say.

Also the recepetion bit - talk to us about it especially when there is public money involved not them.

Does seem to scream lack of trust rather than just a clarification or re-statement of agreeded understood position.

AlonsoMosley · 07/09/2026 16:56

I really do not understand the amount of glee and pleasure that people take from the hope that these two will fail.

With the types that we have running countries, running newspapers, running Social Media and manipulating societies, running around with the Epstein's of this world, and so on - these two are the ones to take aim at? ??

Yes, it’s interesting how many posters are saying things along these lines. Have they not wondered, though, why the Palace would feel it necessary to issue this “clarification”? It couldn’t be because the Sussexes have been sailing close to the wind in terms how they interpreted the Sandringham agreement since they left the UK? Or that they are perceived to be sailing even closer to it now that they are back? There have been so
many rumblings about wanting Met security and wanting to be working royals, none of which have been denied by the Sussexes and so much apparent leaking by them, that even the Palace, that bastion of grey rocking, felt the need to clarify the situation

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 07/09/2026 16:57

I don’t think it’s an order as such, more their move has caused confusion, and they must clearly be getting questions, so he has clarified they are ordinary citizens, he is also saying if there is any requests which involve public money, then that doesn’t go to them, to decide, it goes to the palace.

i suspect Harry and Megan have used their move to try to act like working royals and he’s stepped in and said not happening. As otherwise there would be no need for him to clarify, they’d be doing it themselves.

People have posted to that effect here on MN. This is intended to shut down speculation. (But probably won't.)

I’d love to see them succeed as private citizens but am also pleased to see things clarified by the King.

MaturingCheeseball · 07/09/2026 17:00

I don’t think it’s “nothing to see here” or merely clarification, at all.

It seems very pointed and has been sent to the great and the good and released to the general public. And it was sent to the Sussexes, not issued in collaboration with them.

We don’t know why the “proclamation” was made at this point or why it was deemed necessary to spell things out, but we can have several jolly good ideas why…

This is what the letter is about. Harry and Meghan acting like working royals and wanting to be treated as such. King Charles has spellt it out and made it public. So he obviously thinks a reminder is necessary and so is making it clear.

I wonder if it's because the Wales children will be returning to school soon after the summer break, William and Catherine returning to duties and this puts a stop to any media speculation/questions being asked of them.

It seems a fair way of clarifying things in truth.

A situation which has been confusing and controversial has been made crystal clear. Good!

Where are you getting the “hope that these two fail” from? There’s nothing there that wasn’t in the Sandringham Agreement - it’s just clarifying things now the HAMs have made this dramatic move to the UK. Fair enough.
