King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

They’re not seething. All been done in conjunction with them according to the statement.

I suspect that but was a kindness.

Yes, this is what I thought - just like the daily mail. They love to run down Harry and Meghan, even more so after the courts.

Hopefully if they are classed as 'ordinary citizens' they can start suing the daily mail for harassment.

In what way are they being harassed by the DM ?

The Mail. That famous paper of record.

It’s an official statement from KC - in every news outlet .

They’ll be treated like ordinary rich people. That’s a wee bit different. Charles can’t stop people fawning.

He might be able to stop the royal cosplaying and also let charities know that the Sussexes will not receive money from the Crown/taxpayer for expenses or security. hand M have fleeced a few charities in the past with their antics and expense claims.

What they do, they do entirely as private citizens, and I’m glad that’s now been spelled out (AGAIN for H & M, who didn’t seem to quite believe it after the Sandringham Agreement.)

MargoLivebetter · 07/09/2026 16:15

Isn't that what the Sandringham Agreement said?

Not sure, but it always struck me as comical that they termed that an “agreement”. Those two indicated openly that they did not agree.

Has Harry paid off the millions of pounds in costs from the last lawsuit he lost? Does not ANL own the Daily Mail?

I think the wording is “shared with them”? So not consulted but copied in.

Certainly not being harassed. According to some they seek them out for publicity and for their leaks.

CoffeeCantata · 07/09/2026 16:29

Itsthewoluff · 07/09/2026 16:14

They won’t like that. Puts them firmly in their place.

It’s basically reminding them firmly of the Sandringham Agreement which they have flouted repeatedly in the US and elsewhere.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/09/2026 16:31

@NewAgain26 Not working for the Royal Family is in effect, being on their own and private citizens. It’s clarification.

It’s not just the Daily Mail looking at this story! Everyone is carrying it because the letter is open to everyone.

LaMarschallin · 07/09/2026 16:31

Will Meghan be recompensed for the compliments cards she sends out to friends with "HRH The Duchess of Sussex" on or will she just Tippex out the "HRH", I wonder 🤔

Good luck with that.

What legal firm would tangle with H before he’s paid his last gargantuan cost bill?

Gettingbysomehow · 07/09/2026 16:32

ooh...ouch. That certainly spelt it out.

She will save them for we ignorant Americans.

Mr Harry and Mrs Megan Mountbatten-Windsor to see you, your majesty. Show them in Jeeves.

stuffedanimalsandchocolate · 07/09/2026 16:35

This is ridiculous. It's an administrative clarification that they continue not to be working members of the royal family.

It's not some kind of gotcha to Harry and Meghan, it's been issued so that people stop asking the royal family about them

This. They have returned to the UK as private citizens. They are not entitled to police security, publicly funded or otherwise, are not entitled to use HRH, are required to obey the same laws as the rest of us and they do not represent the King in any way.

I'd say that's crystal clear then. Icily so.

Found it:

The King's letter in full:
Following the decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to relocate to the UK, we have received a number of requests for Guidance. To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared.

It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family. This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.

It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.

Any specific questions from official and State organisations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.

All correspondence and administrative questions relating to the couple should be sent directly to their office, which will continue to operate separately from The Royal Household.

The Right Honourable The Lord Benyon GCVO

Ok, and?

Whats the story?

I think it’s more a reminder to them than a notice to the rest of us.

They did seem quite confused with their Royal Tours and monogrammed welcome mats.

Perhaps they can stop making announcements in the press now?
