There was an absolutely epic "lottery fail" story in the DM once.

They won something ridiculous like 2.4m, and IIRC, they:

  • bought a 1m house
  • sent their kids private
  • opened a beauty salon
  • husband set up a studio for his garage band
  • husband got multiple sports cars
  • wife got a fair bit of plastic surgery

And most expensively of all, they then got divorced.

I can't find the story, but is comedy gold, and basically what HAM have done.

I remember that couple, they went on Location Location Location!

I agree, if someone on here won Harry’s estimated 30 million on the lottery and announced they were buying a 16 bathroomed mansion in, California for occasional use, a holiday house in Portugal and a twelve million pound country estate in the Cotswolds plus all the staff and grounds people and personal security costs which run into millions we would tell them you don’t have enough money for that lifestyle. There is no way Harry has that type of money, Daddy Warbucks is helping them out.

I agree Bank of Pa is helping H out.

And it follows, then, that the house in he Cotswolds was bought for him by Pa.

So Pa wasn't "blindsided" by the recent move back (if he was, the UK intelligence services aren't doing their job).

So, BP sources are lying about this. Why?!

This is either Project Thaw or the next step in a slow process of extraction. Let's hope BP/Pa have put leverage in place to stop the attacks on the RF in general and W & C in particular.

How come The Queen Mother had so much money? Daughter of an Earl i know but she had a lot of siblings.

People constantly refer to a big inheritance from the Queen Mother but I understood she had a massive overdraft (underwritten by The Queen) and left a pile of debt. I honestly think it’s a sort of urban legend that she left all these generous bequests.

It was said to be a 4 million pound overdraft and that the late Queen had long since stopped trying to reign in her mums spending.

LaMarschallin · 28/08/2026 10:47

I think that many people just don't understand how much money is a lot and what you can buy with it.
I've read things on MN like "King Charles could fund the NHS" or "If they gave up the royal residences there'd be no homeless people".

Some people's money sounds like a huge amount when all assets are taken into account. Some people I know would be multi-millionaires if all their assets were taken into account, but they'd have no house, no transport, so savings...

A nurse I worked with became engaged to a salaried GP. She kept telling us how she planned to have the "best of everything", she was going to have more children and they'd all go to private school, obviously she'd give up her job...
In her viewpoint doctors were extremely wealthy because they earned more than a nurse at her grade. It was a bit of a rude awakening, but she loves him and stuck around. Still working though.

I know: world's tiniest violin, people are struggling to buy food etc
However, despite not ever having to worry about food or heating and I do know what that's like*, it doesn't mean that rich people have millions easily available for court costs or another house.

Eta
*Having to worry about it, not never having to worry about it.
Realised that was ambiguous.

bluegreygreen · 28/08/2026 10:50

Two comments

Do you know the house is bought rather than rented? (The journalists on Palace Confidential didn't.)

The UK intelligence services do not report to the Royal Family.

ETA Sorry, that was supposed to quote @Rhaidimiddim's post

Justdancevance · 28/08/2026 11:00

i hope the kids new school is sensible and doesn’t pander to ridiculous demands creating resentment eg handing out NDA’s to other parents and having threatening looking security roaming the corridors which will upset all kids

I just can’t imagine them making a bigger success in the Cotswolds than they did in the US. They have a true gift for pissing people off and people who could have helped smooth the transition won’t feel like doing so.

Who buys properties in cash? Most people take out mortgages, especially wealthy people who perhaps could pay in cash but would prefer to take out a mortgage and invest the money because the return on the investment is very likely to be much more than the interest they would have to pay out. Harry also owns half of Diana's jewellery collection, which could be used as collateral for huge mortgages.

We also don't know just what wealth Harry has and how much his properties cost or what his expenses are, so all these guesses about this amount and that amount are just assumptions piled on top of other assumptions.

The way inherited wealth or even great wealth made through business is managed and invested is very different from someone winning a lottery and suddenly coming into a lot of money.

Up until Harry left the UK he didn't even have to dip into these investments because he was getting an allowance or however it's arranged from the Duchy of Cornwall.

I watched Palace Confidential last night, the first time I ever have (thanks to @bluegreygreen for the link) and it was really good!

Alison Boshoff is of the view that the very public arrival and HAM letting the press know is Harry basically daring the govt not to give him security.

AB thinks that while financially it's very unfair, he will get RAVEC security because he needs it due to his position and having been in the military. I agree. I don't like it at all, but I think now he's back there's a case to be made and he'll get it.

@Starryfifty tbf, no one on Palace Confidential suggested that HAM had leaked the school, they made it clear they knew that because people in Cornwall obviously knew what school and they talked. Rebecca English said they wouldn't publish it because the children have a right to a private life and HAM have said they don't want it leaked.

I agree. I’m furious that he has behaved the way he has, and now expects to swan back in and be treated as if nothing had changed, at our expense.
However I do believe he needs security. We live in difficult times and there are possible threats from a range of participants.
If you look at the murders of three MPs -
Jo Cox : Right wing neo nazi type nutter.
David Amess : Islamist supporter of ISIS.
Anne Widdecombe : TBC but probably hard left nutter.

Then there are the everyday nutters and people with fixations.

All MPs’ security is now being beefed up, rightly. Our politicians need to be able to be unpopular/support unpopular views (of whichever cause) without getting murdered for it.

But who else is entitled to tax payer funded security?

Billie Piper has had a dreadful time with a stalker who has recently been jailed for all of 12 months (?out in six?)
Holly Willoughby has had death threats.
Do/did they get tax payer funded security?

And what about all the many other women with stalkers or violent ex partners? So many repeatedly contact police and get no meaningful help until Whoops sorry, she’s dead but we can arrest him now.

Harry is at risk, probably more so thanks to putting a big fat target on his back with his stupid revelations.
He’s the son of the King.
But is he so much more deserving than Hollie or Billie or any other victim of a deranged stalker?

Justdancevance · 28/08/2026 11:03

I was in London a few weeks ago, and saw
that ‘President snow’ in the hunger games out in Canary Wharf was prerecorded

Meghan isn’t a great actress, I nearly choked on my coffee when the rest is Pr declared she could be the new Julia Roberts 😂😂 or the rest is entertainment said Harlan Coben could write a show for her and Harry could star in ‘Harry’s heroes ‘ 🤯😂 Harry could use injured soldiers to renovate houses for people in need. Liam has been busy in London buttering people up

Starryfifty · 28/08/2026 11:05

Is Harry a target though? I assumed he's just considered a bit of an idiot. He chose to write about killing taliban 🙄

ShamedBySiri · 28/08/2026 11:06

Also in terms of what has changed - well he now has two children at school and a wife flitting between UK and USA.
So security for the home and for Harry and for Meghan when she swans off to London on a shopping trip. Will it accompany her abroad?
Then there are the children. Will they have security in ten years time when Archie is falling out of nightclubs drunk?
Where will it end?

Its sickening.

Justdancevance · 28/08/2026 11:09

The last few years have shown that more money should be going towards protecting Willam and his family as Harry on the throne would destroy the country

I bet the the school principal in the Cotswolds is beginning to wonder if it was the right decision to find those places.

Poor staff, parents and other children.

I was wondering that.
All I've heard is that it's not Beaudesert. Which I hadn't heard of anyway.
I'm not up on private schools in that area (or anywhere really) apart from the one DH and his family's menfolk attended.

mermadeincornwall · 28/08/2026 07:49

I'm curious...if HaM have bought a house at such short notice, how have they managed to furnish it etc.?
I can't imagine M letting a PA choose towels, bedding ,crockery and everything else.

I suspect it will all be product placement / advertising - probs a big tie up with Soho House / Soho Home - so everything will be free and will earn a commission / negotiated a fee for when her insta/Hello/NFs etc shows and links to product for sale. She’s capable of multi-tasking - simultaneously selling the clothes off her back on the Aus tour - so won’t be hard for her to flog a load of furniture, crockery, cutlery, linens whilst filming and promoting their ‘return to UK’ experience. I am sure she has locked down every teaspoon and toilet brush to merch.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 28/08/2026 09:05

I agree and as I have posted previously, the fact of them coming back here makes it a million times worse because their proximity gives credence to their quasi royal roles.

It is one thing to spout nonsense and flog tat under a royal title as an exile, albeit self imposed, but quite another to do so when living just down the road from the King.

We hold our monarchy accountable because they represent our country.

We expect a standard of behaviour which reflects the dignity and integrity of the position.

H&M fall far short of this being proven liars, stupid, vengeful and hypocritical.

Ultimately they are tacky and an embarrassment to our country.

Whilst they were in the US we could tolerate them (whilst still of course being outraged by the racism accusations, breaches of privacy, bullying and cruelty etc) as what had become a quite entertaining spectacle of almost daily disaster and we enjoyed watching them get their just desserts.

However the move here has changed the situation from irrelevant idiocy to dangerous idiocy.

The titles need to go to separate their antics from the monarchy.

I completely agree @Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit but I think that buts up against the fact that KC and presumably others in the family actually believes there is something special about him that makes him king, rather than simply an accident of birth.

Just like lots of very rich people often think they have just worked harder, rather than been lucky with a good education, capital and social connections.

So de-royaling one of his sons, although the obvious thing to do to many outside is much harder to contemplate because of that magical belief.

Same here, not difficult. It will get out and wah wah wha, will be the press at fault. They didn’t have to say they had arrived , or how or where.
Also now the school is known, it will be very easy to identify A&L from the photos that M has put on SM. I am sure I could pick them out.
Also, H&Ms statement about Meta, errr maybe close your instagram accounts? You are the problem.

if she posts them in their school uniform, that would be absolutely shocking tbh. Alas I'm not surprised

rocklivia · 28/08/2026 11:12

That's up to MNHQ essentially.

Personally as I said before, I don't feel it's morally right to do so. Or legally, as the children have a right to privacy and their parents haven't publicly disclosed the school, in fact they have requested privacy around that.

BasiliskStare · 28/08/2026 11:32

I suspect H&M are renting pro tem and looking to buy (at which point KC may step in) But , but I do not know.

Re the school , I don't think anyone should name it. I suspect other parents at the school are not best pleased at the H&M show coming to town. I know M covers her children's faces but she does post photos of them a lot on her instagram which I think could , not unreasonably , be seen as whipping up interest in them. As people have said the likes of Starmer , the Clooneys , no photos at all. & who knows where they went to school or cares. I think M has trodden a very fine line and not sure she's always been on the right side of it.

Thanks for the Palace Confidential link @bluegreygreen - I thought some quiet informed common sense was spoken there.
