GBNews are reporting that Harry and Megan are moving back to the UK at the end of August.

I won't believe it until I hear it on the BBC.

William does potentially have a looming problem when he takes the throne. There may only be him, Kate, Edward and Sophie able to do the bulk of royal duty stuff.

He won't want his kids to be full time royals until they're at least out of their early 20s. The only other options are to widen the pool of active royals or whittle down current patronages, events etc.

I think eventually Harry, on his own, will return to being an active royal via a soft strategy drip feed over the next decade. Depends to some extent what happens in his marriage but I could imagine a 55 year old Harry with a 2nd wife who is a bit more of a Sophie type.

I would be astounded if Harry is ever a working royal again. He has been pretty clear over the past six years how horrible the Royal Family is, how awful it is being a working royal, and how dreadful being in the UK was.
He's made his feelings crystal clear.
Hypocrisy wouldn't describe it.

HelenaWilson · 21/08/2026 19:29

The posters who won't welcome Harry back, would you if he divorced Meghan?

No. He has lied, he has misrepresented, he has whinged, he has dragged private individuals who have no redress into his whingefest. Probably the worst is that he did nothing to refute the slurs on Catherine, supposedly the sister he had always wanted.

Best thing for him would be to go and live a private life somewhere out of public view.

Maybe, but I would have once said Camilla couldn't be rehabilitated and brought into public life and I was wrong about that.

No. He can come back as a private citizen but I just cannot face him as a royal again, or all over the news.

I’m generally miserable that, far from fading into the sunset, which I hoped they’d eventually do, the media, including the BBC are just covered in H&M,

Please make it stop.

In 97/98 no one would imagine Camilla married to Charles & particularly adding such future value.

We can’t know for certain but I think odds are good they do. They allegedly bought off plan in Nov 24 for $4.7 mil - affordable for them.

The talk is of them ‘retaining’ property here too.

I really don’t buy it but we shall see

The issue is trust, not moral judgment. H has shown himself to be treacherous, highly indiscreet, slanderous and libellous and totally untrustworthy. Hes als sown himself to be highly emotionally unstable and not very intelligent.

I don’t think he could ever do official duty with those character flaws. Absolute discretion and confidentiality is needed for that.

Eh? Camilla trashed the RF for money down did she? Complained about the UK, the press, royal hierarchy and generational trauma? Did she write a moany book, have a tv series and do multiple interviews about how horrendous her life was?
I don't think so.

No

Meghan gets blamed for an awful lot, and while a certain amount of that is fair Harry's still responsible for his own choices and actions

If they do split, and should the RF want to rehabilitate Harry, I've not the least doubt they'd use her many faults and hideous behaviours as a tool, but that wouldn't change the fact that Harry was quite prepared to endorse them when it suited

As has been said... very different.

Absolutely 💯

That’s a really good question. I think he would have to do one hell if a lot of apologising first but I really don’t know

Not at all, you’re right.

However her reputation was in gutter & name was mud.

Rehabilitation IS possible. Although, as @CoffeeCantata put it so well, inherent character flaws may be very problematic re: any future comeback & royal role for H.

Edited

Only because of her relationship with Charles. Not because she'd made a personal industry out of trashing the RF and the UK for money.
You're right about her rehabilitation, it was possible because she'd retained dignity, self control and rose above the criticisms. She's proven herself to be a good consort who people can respect

HelenaWilson · 21/08/2026 19:52

The only other options are to widen the pool of active royals or whittle down current patronages, events etc.

But who is there? Only Lady Louise and James Wessex, really, and they may have their own career plans. (I think Lady Louise has just graduated, but I don't think we know what she's planning to do next.)

Zara and Mike are personable and outgoing and would probably do a good job, but they'd have to give up their own interests, which they probably wouldn't want to do.

The issue is trust, not moral judgment.
Camilla has never whinged, has never been indiscreet and has never made it All About Her. Her conduct in public life can't be faulted.

I imagine the King will have been advised not to allow H any access to confidential or sensitive information, whether personal or otherwise.

I agree, and your last point is spot on.

Supersimkin7 · 21/08/2026 20:12

I think the RF should start looking for celebrity ambassadors for causes and events they can send instead of themselves.

A couple of elder statesman sports champions eg Andy Murray, to open events and do the speech, grand old actors eg Ken Branagh for the showbiz stuff (admittedly the royals love this themselves) and some health types for hospital visits etc..

You’d have to avoid politicians but that’s no loss.

The thing is, when it comes down to it, the only real 'royal duty stuff' is done by the Monarch. The practice of various members of the royal family doing charity visits and the like is a relatively recent invention, but it's not integral to a monarchy.

These days, there isn't the same interest in the wider royal family as there was a generation ago. Nobody is going to turn up to see someone open a community centre just because they are the nephew or cousin of the King. So it's very likely that going forward, the only active royals will be the Monarch and Consort, plus Heir and their spouse. The peripheral 'royal duty stuff' will be phased out. I think this is already happening.

Yes, I was going to say something similar. It's interesting that William wants to focus on fewer causes, but be more involved and support them in the long term, eg climate change and homelessness.
Therefore I think that it'll be different in the future, and not so many royals are needed, really.

Supersimkin7 · 21/08/2026 20:19

W&K have made it clear they’re not busting a gut ‘expectations will have to change’.

Yes, that's how it looks.

Personally, I kind of like the 'visiting a sheep farm in Yorkshire' thing, but then I'm old. It probably seems rather quaint to younger folk. Probably some of those kinds of engagements will remain, but fewer than in recent years, and they won't need to recruit various peripheral royals to undertake them. Times change, and so do expectations of royals and their role.

Anyone feel it’s rude - like they should have asked us all first 😀
