While both were awesome I have to defend 70's fashion.

Almost anything went in the 70s. Long hair, short hair, curly hair, straight hair. Mini skirts, midi skirts, maxi skirts.

Very true, and a sovereign nation.

Harry seems to be wanting to destabilise the tolerant pluralistic democracies that he pretends to support.

Does he want to be made king of somewhere?

That could be it!

Yes, probably some poor African nation. Before he met Meghan he was always wittering on about going to live in Africa. Probably so he could sit on his arse all day and lord it over the people.

LazyCatLtd · 24/04/2026 22:27

I could see him as a Witch Doctor?

OctopusFriend · 24/04/2026 22:28

Long before he was married I remember an interview with him saying he didn't like being royal and he wanted to "travel round Brazil for a year, like an ordinary bloke".
Yes, millions of ordinary blokes have the money and resources to have a year long jolly in Brazil.

BemusedAmerican · 24/04/2026 23:44

bluegreygreen · 24/04/2026 17:55

Good to see you @BemusedAmerican - thought you hadn't been about for a while

I've been reading and not commenting. I've been sick for much of 2026. Just started to get my energy back. I'm glad the NYC weather is getting warmer. I can't handle extreme cold and snow anymore.

Lunde · 24/04/2026 23:52

CathyorClaire · 24/04/2026 21:48

Huh.

Also just remembered my purple nylon PJ's ( which would undoubtedly comprehensively fail any fire safety test conducted within the last 40 years).

Almost certainly Tesco Delamare but possibly the very close by Brentford Nylons?

Happy days 😎

My mother insisted I wear a homemade blue gingham summer dress to school made of some sort of nylon fabric she had found going (very) cheap in Walthamstow market.

You can imagine how comfortable I was in the hot summer classroom.

Ah - poor Harry - instead of a year in Brazil him and his entourage had to slum it and spend his gap year in
Australia - 3 months in Queensland working as a "jackaroo" (cowboy) on a cattle ranch and then a period in Sydney, playing polo for a team and watching the Rugby World Cup.
Lesotho - volunteered doing those "make work" jobs for rich boys such as helping to build a clinic, and building a road bridge rather than giving jobs to locals with actual practical building skills
Argentina: living on a polo ranch for a while

Such a hard life 🙄🙄

Well they do say in the land of the blind the one eyed man is King.

I think that is endowment him with far too much thought and planning. He thinks he is still a working royal and that his presence and thoughts have a weight they don't in reality hold.

Sorry to hear that - hope you keep improving with spring 💐

Maybe someone should start a thread about clothes..lots of really cool descriptions even of nighties

The 70s started with hippie fashions and ended with sequin boob tubes and black satin jeans. It was the best decade ever for clothes and music - such variety !

I agree he holds no credibility. I don’t see why people are getting so aerated and demanding BRF / government step because it’s giving him too much dignity and credibility. You need to see him as some z-list ‘sleb on the skids and treat him accordingly - ie not relevant.

Any words or actions from BRF / government will inadvertently backfire on them as H&M will use any words / actions as the bullets to shoot them with. Don’t give them the ammunition. Sit tight at a distance and watch the inevitable declining spiral don’t get in its way!

And then, once they're irrelevant and once there is a new king, revise the entire titles thing for the whole gang so H can't claim victimisation (he will).

I loved it.

I always thought it was awful, crumpled etc. Until saw it displayed in an exho in KP, and then I changed my mind.... absolutely gorgeous. OK, yes, the style is now out of fashion, but the impact was amazing. Probably helped by great lighting in the exho, and the fact that all the creases had gone!

corblimeygvnr · 26/04/2026 00:18

I was in California at the time of the wedding of Charles and Diana. There was major interest in it.

thenightsky · 26/04/2026 22:57

I think Diana's dress had to be huge and dramatic to fill that St Paul's cathedral atmosphere. Anything smaller wouldn't have worked.

I was on holiday in Australia. We went out for dinner and I recall one of the waitresses said 'we have the tv on in the kitchen' and pretty much every woman in the place rushed to the kitchen and left their husbands sitting eating their meals in a solitary state at the table.

Ohpleeeease · 27/04/2026 07:57

I loved Diana’s dress at the time, although she had the wrong figure for it, too booby. But it was, and is, iconic. Very few wedding dresses are so unique that everyone remembers them.

SF’s was lovely on the day but unmemorable. The other one that sticks in my mind is Princess Anne’s. It was very fashion forward.

OctopusFriend · 27/04/2026 08:00

Wrong figure? "Too booby"?
Check out Diana's engagement pictures, then her wedding pictures.
The Emanuels were taking the dress in and refitting it every week in the run up to the wedding, she was losing so much weight.
