The royal family

Why does Prince Edward garner less interest from the press and public compared to the other senior royals?

Is it partly because he's QEII's youngest child, and also that he hasn't really done anything controversial during his life? I'm too young to remember his childhood and formative years - did he get more attention back then?

I thought there was a chance he might assume greater prominence as one of the most senior royals, particularly with the events of the last few years - his nephew the Duke of Sussex departing as a working royal, both his parents passing away, KC struggling with cancer, and AMW now completely ostracised from the family. That doesn't appear to have happened though.

There were some controversies in the past - Knockout for him and Sheikgate for Sophie - but he and Sophie have been a safe pair of hands since.

ACynicalDad · 17/03/2026 08:34

He had an awkward phase when sophie and he were searching for a role, he did tv production using his links to the royal family. That’s long in the past and I think they are quietly competent, read slightly boring, so the press say very little about them. They are supporting cast not main character. If Charles dies before George and Charlotte are ready to step up I think we’ll see a bit more of him, but their roles are dofe award, women in conflict and opening village halls etc.

2chocolateoranges · 17/03/2026 08:35

I think he has learned to keep himself to himself and marrying Sophie they have tried to keep their children under wraps to allow them to have a childhood away from the media.

BananaSkinShoes · 17/03/2026 08:37

I don’t think he ever had attention. There was a brief period where he was thought of as a bit of a twat, around the time of ‘It’s a Royal Knockout’, but apart from that and his 5 minute stint in the marines, he’s remained nicely unremarkable. Sophie too. She had a fall from grace which was swiftly forgotten.

I think the fact they’re both a solid, middle-aged, decidedly unglamorous pair works in their favour. The tabloids aren’t interested.

I wish they were all as low-key.

Leaving the Forces early and his company filming William in his first year at St Andrews when media was banned too.

I’ve met him. He exudes boring middle aged man, grey rock, slightly nice but inoffensive. As a strategy for a man in his position it works and others would do well to take note!

HotBaths · 17/03/2026 08:40

Because their ‘interesting’ (read fuck ups) moments are long in the past?

I met him at my son’s DofE gold presentation. Had a brief chat. He was such a dullard. Very awkward and geeky.

Because he just gets on with job, and doesn't attract controversy. He is exactly what the royals need, and it's said that The King and PoW both think highly of him.
He has made 2 visits to the same venue near to me, in recent years, and staff were impressed by his interest and how relaxed he was.

cramptramp · 17/03/2026 08:45

Because he’s quiet and gets on with his job. I love Sophie. She was at an event I went to and she gave a really nice speech, very natural and warm.

mothersdaywoe · 17/03/2026 08:46

I have met him when he opened my daughter’s school and you could not find a lovelier man, He had no children of his own at the time. He hadn’t been married long and he was so engaging and warm and interested.
And if he wasn’t, he faked it very well and that was good enough for me

He also wanted to make tv about the RF if I remember right he wanted to.do it through "his" p roduction company then he did, It's a knock out and got it out of his system.

CrocusesFlowering · 17/03/2026 08:50

I just think it’s a bit sad that he was left out of the RF Mother’s Day tribute on instagram. There’s a photo of TLQ with Charles and Anne as young children. They obviously can’t have a photo with Andrew in it so Edward has to be left out too.

Lomonald · 17/03/2026 08:51

He was at my then boyfriends now husbands DoE award ceremony gave my DH his gold award. He seemed chatty and interested,

Lomonald · 17/03/2026 08:52

I like Sophie, she seems quietly confident about life.

I don't think edward has ever found public life that easy as he is shy and like you say awkward. That said Sophie is quite extroverted and appears to have good people/comms skills (with her PR background) and I think thas helped Edward come out of his shell a bit.

I really like Sophie, she has coped well with royal life despite her own personal challenges (infertility, giving up her career etc). I thought she was brave marrying into that family on the back of all the divorces in the 90s and Diana's death.

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/03/2026 12:04

He had been at the Paraolympics, he does quite a few foreign visits and a lot of stuff connected to the DofE awards. The problem is that the press rarely convert anything he and Sophue drop do unless you follow the Royal Instagram account it's easy to forget about him.

Holdmybeermoment · 17/03/2026 12:12

They’re boring. And people don’t like them the way they like Anne so no reason for the press to really report much about them.

They had a few scandals and embarrassing mistakes in the early years, so they wisely went quiet and just got on with their royal visits in the background. The royals do thousands of engagements a year; not all that many are reported on, remember.

Andrew courted the press and loved it, and was very scandal full so the press loved him. Obviously the main family (Queen, then Charles and his sons) were the headlines, because their engagements are the main show. And with the Harry stuff, it got very juicy in recent years.

The public really like Anne, so even with her being sandal free, they’ll report on her.

Just… no one really cares about Edward 🤷‍♀️

CrocusesFlowering · 17/03/2026 12:22

This must be the first thread ever started on mn about Edward. There was a recent thread about Sophie’s overseas tour but that only got to a few pages. There is very little interest in either of them.

But safe. I mean, no tabloid is going to be hanging around his events hoping he’ll rock up with coke residue on his nose and a slurred admission that he’s Team Meghan and Harry.

catipuss · 17/03/2026 12:35

They keep their heads down and don't do anything stupid. And they are a long way off the line of inheritance.

He was definitely ‘safe’.

I felt it a shame that he wasn’t good with the youngsters. I was imagining William or Harry would’ve been great and had some banter and a laugh with them. Edward just awkwardly and stiffly asked the same question to each group.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/03/2026 12:50

There was talk with my drama school friends about him being luvvie with Michael Ball, he had a nickname and Michael was nicknamed Lucille. Otherwise he comes across as boring.

CathyorClaire · 19/03/2026 09:28

The most interesting thing about him these days are the terms of the lease he has on the 120 room pile he rattles around in.

I doubt he'll thank MW for turning the spotlight on it and similar deals.

BoxingHare · 21/03/2026 16:51

Unlike Charles and William they don't seem to require a pr team feeding puff pieces to the press to cover up anything else. So they continue to quietly get on with their lives.
