The royal family

Why does Prince Edward garner less interest from the press and public compared to the other senior royals?

Is it partly because he's QEII's youngest child, and also that he hasn't really done anything controversial during his life? I'm too young to remember his childhood and formative years - did he get more attention back then?

I thought there was a chance he might assume greater prominence as one of the most senior royals, particularly with the events of the last few years - his nephew the Duke of Sussex departing as a working royal, both his parents passing away, KC struggling with cancer, and AMW now completely ostracised from the family. That doesn't appear to have happened though.

It was Duchess of Edinburgh not Duchess of Sussex.
I don't understand why a police outrider has to go between 44mph and 58mph in a 30mph zone whilst escorting Sophie. It's not as if the royals haven't got lots of time, they're hardly rushing between appointments, and even if they are late, people wait for them because they are royal.
It was a tragedy.

He’s the third hardest working Royal, with 313 Royal engagements last year. He keeps his head down and gets on with it.

hahabahbag · 23/03/2026 14:48

I’ve met him, he was pleasant, unassuming and didn’t want special treatment (normal hot drink in a mug) was pleasant to the police who were having issues sweeping the building with a wayward sniffer dog more interested in the smell of the baking cookies. He keeps a quiet life, turns up as required to support his brother or their own projects, charities etc. Was so much easier to deal with than the Lord Mayor who definitely does stand on ceremony!

Respectfully, that’s like saying someone is the ‘third hardest-working sloth’.

I’ve known some very hard working sloths. Having to be upside down all the time and growing moss in their hair means that they can’t achieve much despite the long hours they work….

Oh yes sorry! Edinburgh not Sussex🙈 Wessex not Sussex ! Is she still Wessex? I can’t believe I’ve confused my duchesses!

Interestingly the outriders are allowed to ignore the speed limit if they pose no threat to the public.

The rider was very baffling in his statement in court; summarizing he seems to have said that this tragedy has ruined his life ( 🤔 ) he was there, he did hit the woman who then died of her injuries but that he wasn’t saying that he did anything out of keeping with his duties. He said he suddenly went faster - something to do with a cyclist (??) umm….. and then the pedestrian who he effectively killed, came ‘out of nowhere’ like a suffragette, I guess, throwing herself under an innocent and noble horse.

Also, I think he was 68. Not being ageist but I wouldn’t have thought many police outriders were 68? I thought policeman all retired by about 50 on fantastic gold plated pensions (Sorry I know an ex copper who did).

I bet the family of this very beloved grandmother sit and wonder why Sophie Wessex Duchess of Edinburgh needs a farking police convoy? I mean shes’s not a world leader.

The use of ‘hardest working’ in that sentence makes it vaguely hilarious.

True. I am being unfair to sloths by comparing them to the RF.

Sorry, sloths of the world.

I can never remember which one is duke of what either. Decided when the old queen died that I was sticking to first names instead. And I say the old queen, but my guess is most people still think of Elizabeth II if you say 'the queen'.

Especially with 313 engagements. How long do they take? An hour or two?

wildfellhall · 23/03/2026 18:44

Bagshot Park though - Apparently they only have 120 rooms! How do they manage! It’s like a shoebox!!

RainbowBagels · 23/03/2026 20:41

Peppercorn rent again too

An engagement can be a 20 minute phone call.

This analysis showing a similar figure to yours shows the whole skiving lot clock up the equivalent of six month's full time work with E. contributing around six weeks to the disgraceful total:

The myth of any royal working hard is a masterpiece of spin.

Sophie is brilliant. Her work on raising awareness of sexual violence in conflict zones is genuinely brave and useful. She's travelled to places like Sudan and the Congo.
Camilla has done really important work in supporting rape victims here in the UK too.
I wonder if Montecito ever bothered to see how you could make a different on important women's issues without making it all about yourself...

Montecito are no longer working royals so not sure why they must do something.

Putting them aside, why is it that both Sophie and Camilla stay quiet about that statement issued calling Virginia a liar when we now know she wasn't lying and yet no official apology has been made to her family. They would both know through their work that trying to discredit a victim and the consequences of that can be awful yet here they are part of a family and institution that has done just that...why do they remain silent on it ...what do you think about that?

There have been unequivocal statements about the importance of listening to victims: https://www.royal.uk/news-and-activity/2025-10-30/a-statement-from-buckingham-palace I don't think Camilla and Sophie are reponsible for their idiot brother in law and I think their actions speak for themselves.

Meghan made a lot of noise around the time of their engagement about how she would use the Royal Family as a platform for meaningful activism. Camilla and Sophie (and Kate with her early childhood work) show that there is absolutely a way to do that, but you have to put the issue before yourself and do a lot of the convening work without cameras in the room. What they do is much more meaningful than anything the Sussexes have done since they left the UK.

So they are part of an institution that unequivocally discredit a victim of abuse. Putting out a statement saying sympathies are with victims is not enough an apology is owed and whilst they are responsible for Andrew you cannot be supporting the charities they do whilst turning a blind eye and staying quiet at what has happened at home. Imagine advocating that victims of abuse should be listened to whilst being quiet on how the monarchy they are apart of didn't, hypcrocrisy comes to mind here.

Im not on this thread to talk about Meghan. She has left, what she does as a non working royal is her business she is no longer part of the institution carrying out work on its behalf and therefore it doesn't matter to me if she speaks up or not.

He came to our church for its 800 year anniversary. Came into the vestry afterwards to meet the choir (we'd all had to provide biogs). My son was the organist and was going to Oxford that summer with an organ scholarship. When he was introduced to my son he made the joke about anyone being able to get into Oxford if they played the organ and could write their name in crayon.
Ironic since the Royals wouldn't even have needed to be able to play the organ...
I thought it was inappropriate and just the sort of comment his father would have made.
So yes - dull and a bit socially inept - (but to be fair most people there fawned over him and had a jolly super time 🤣)

Edited

Bit rich considering he was wangled into Cambridge and came out with a 3rd. He was in the Royal Marines for a few months but couldn't hack it and left. There were some rumours that he had to leave but maybe gossip/rumours were just what they were.

Edward was the first person she hugged on finishing the DoE challenge - didn’t appear unfriendly to me!

Oh dear. The children hugging her. I'm welling up.

I think they come across as a pleasant attractive dutiful couple with two nicely-raised children.
He was neither the heir or the spare and didn't court attention.

CathyorClaire · 25/03/2026 20:27

He was neither the heir or the spare and didn't court attention.

Indeed.

He just lives in a 120 room stately pile dwarfing that of his now disgraced big brother (who was the spare for a considerable amount of time) and inveigled the BBC into screening the disastrous 'It's A Royal Knockout' while not at all hoping it might put him on the entertainment map.

I think few people would want to inhabit a 120 room mansion. You'd have to be mega rich to afford the upkeep, plus day to day housekeeping and grounds maintenance.

Sounds more trouble than it's worth.
