William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

I do not wish to speculate about a real person’s condition. However I do wonder whether Catherine’s long term prognosis is not as good as we have been led to assume. This would help explain the focus on family time rather than a full calendar.

I do think William will have to start doing more engagements if he wants to keep public opinion from turning against him.

Just to throw in another thought, @ARichtGoodDram, what if he doesn't care?

As things stand there's nothing to stop him doing the very minimum he can get away with while enjoying the endless privileges and money, and with so many either pro monarchy or ambivalent who's going to tell him he can't?

Sadly I agree. People seem to be absolutely blind to his faults, probably partly because of the situation with Harry. In the words of Trump, he could shoot someone and people would still like him so he probably doesn’t care. And we’ll end up paying for a royal family who take the total piss.

I’d love to see them actually do a full 9-5 days work. Or a long shift as a doctor. All that money and education, and what do they do with it?

Have you forgotten that William did a proper job as a rescue helicopter pilot?

Bananafofana · 20/08/2025 12:45

Choosing my words carefully … a close relative was in charge of William and Kate’s tour of another country pre Covid (and pre cancer) times. They were absolutely gobsmacked by how little the couple wanted to do (cancellations to the carefully planned itinerary, numerous rest breaks, no overnights away from main base etc) . My relative had been involved in Royal tours for decades and they had never seen such “work shy” royal representatives. That tour received adoring coverage but my relative’s comments ring in my ears whenever I notice eg William’s many absences.

If he doesn’t care their demise will be swift. We can’t have a country suffering and an indifferent monarchy.

The thing is, the vast majority of people don't follow the royals and aren't really aware of how lazy or otherwise William might be. So long as he has no major scandals he'll be fine, and he knows it.

Conversely I think her prognosis is very good. I think if it were the case that it wasn’t, she and William would step back from active duty entirely. It would avoid a lot of the criticism they’re under now, and any “appearances” at events would be welcomed (“oh isn’t it lovely William has taken the children to the football” etc.), and there would be no criticism.

I have my own speculations as to what happened with her health, having had a friend suffer something very similar.

For how long? Congrats to him for working for what? All of 5 years? I don’t know how on earth he coped!

Violetmouse · 20/08/2025 12:47

On the topic of William taking time off because Kate had cancer.

My daughter had cancer when she was 7. Aggressive chemo and radiotherapy. I was lucky to be able to take some time off when she was ill, had to return to work the week after she finished treatment. We didn't have access to multiple staff to support us with cleaning, household jobs, looking after the kids etc either. Why should the royal family be so much more privileged?

LidlAmaretto · 20/08/2025 12:47

However she was frowned upon by many for leaving Charles as a baby
There is a huge difference between leaving your children with nannies for months on end to the point you barely even know how to interact with them and doing probably 1/4 of what most other parents have to do in terms of workload. In this case even less- take a morning to go to a commemoration service!

Except we know they were on holiday...its not like this is their first holiday of the year that could be used to justify it...

You are assuming they are on holiday. That is not the same as knowing it.

Yeah, he did that for 20 hours a week and then left to become a ‘full time’ royal.
🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for sharing...oh to be a fly on the wall...but this seems to be consistent with what we're hearing and others also say

Yep, William is lazy - and too lazy to hide it!

You are assuming they are on holiday. That is not the same as knowing it.

Only the countless news articles saying they are on a summer break, how they break it to attend a football match...still are on a summer break....is that enough for you or are you calling those journalists liars?

Oh no i made an error in one post...so what its a mistake.

Yes but is a CRUCIAL error - you don't even know who the Head of State is 😂🤷‍♀️

jamnpancakes · 20/08/2025 12:56

And you called him Williams .

Oh no. An apostrophe was missed.

We all know what she meant.

How can you say you had a friend suffer something similar when you have no idea why Kate was in hospital before her cancer diagnosis. It's all speculation.

Emonade · 20/08/2025 13:00

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 08:35

Frankly I find it insulting that they have the ability to turn up to things that relate to their hobbies (football, Wimbledon), but can’t be bothered to turn up to things like this. And I include Catherine in that statement, at this point. She finished chemotherapy nearly a year ago and is in remission. Most normal people would be expected to be back to work at this point.

god I knew this thread would be awful but you’ve really taken the biscuit

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 13:00

I’m confused! Are people actually under the misapprehension that the heir to the throne should just work 9to5 in a normal job?
why? , security aside, why? They are rich , they don’t need to work at all and even if the monarchy was abolished they would be rich and not need to work.
people seem very invested in this idea that William and Catherine are lazy !
where does this come from? , we have literally no proof of what they get up to when not in the public eye or if the media doesn’t report on it .
the younger royals use sm unlike the older ones, for all anyone knows he could be working all the time like his father did in the background, or he could be doing nothing.
the whole point is nobody knows .
this whole thread is dripping with delight at sticking the boot in, and as always well timed when Harry is being criticised .

Based on what we do know. I never denied that it was speculation.

This never happened. You’re making it up. The itinerary is publicly available, and every journalist on tour knows in advance where they’ll be and what they’ll do. If something had been canceled, it would have been reported. Nice try, though.

Well i do as per the thread i started. I made a mistake in a post later on. Chill out its just an interesting discussion to have, no need to get so worked up or a an error here or there.

I don't think it is a question of William attending or not. It was left to the older generation who are closer to the events of the War and rightly so. William has had enough over the past year to deal with and needs rest and recuperation. He is not a machine. Our King and Queen are doing a marvellous job and I am certain that William will step in when deemed necessar.

The Wales family have been skiing this year and on a billionaires yacht in Greece. Now they’re off to summer in Scotland. That’s more rest and recuperation than vast swathes of the population will get.
