Looks like William took George and Charlotte to see Taylor Swift for his birthday. Looks like Taylor was just as happy to meet them as they were to meet her.

How do the RF costs compare to elected Heads of State?

If there's not much difference then it doesn't matter financially. After all there does need to be a HoS.

In the USA I think every ex-president gets state security? That must be pricey. How many ex-presidents are still alive? 5?

No royals to protect> police employed to protect switched to other role= more police officers OR money saved on police no longer required> money returned to public purse.

There will still be a Head of State to protect though. And their families. And past heads of State once a new incumbent has been installed. So you’ll have more people to protect, not fewer.

There's no reason, in theory, why they'd have more costs than the current PM and ex PMs etc. We could just call the PM a President instead and keep the costs for them as they are.

Sorry, don't have time to go back and read the whole thread, but where is this figure of £345,000,000 coming from? Are posters just using it because it sounds like a big, scary number?

I wonder if this indicates William is ready to crack on with some actual work. He has only done 9 engagements so far in June, according to the Court Circular, yet he has the time/energy/fitness to leverage his position as Prince of Wales to get prime tickets to an England football match and now Taylor Swift (so crowds clearly not an issue with Kates treatment and exposure risk). William is next in line to the throne, when will we demand more of him? It's time for him to step up, the King (who is battling cancer at 70+) is doing more than him. Wheeling his cute kids out for a photo op to make us forget his laziness is becoming wearing.

William has a wife undergoing cancer treatment as well as three young children. Give him a break.

I was neutral about Taylor until her three nights performing in Melbourne where I live. There was such a vibe of giddy happiness in the streets led by young women and girls. Many tales of kindness among the swifties, singing on the trams, looking out for fans with special needs. The police were amazed that there were no arrests in the huge crowds, no fighting...it was like a sort of female utopia! I loved the photo of the Wales family and hope they had that same feeling.

I've heard that some concert goers have felt she was lip syncing and been disappointed by that, but with such a long show and so many dates I don't think it's unreasonable if she does it sometimes. Maybe better that than her cancelling a gig, IDK.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 22/06/2024 23:34

You don't think that a President would require protection?

Some presidents require more protection. You don't see POTUS driving around in an open carriage - as our royals have been doing for the past week.

And apparently Macron kicked up a fuss about being taken to the Queen's funeral by bus with a lot of other heads of state. He thought it was beneath him, especially when he learned that Biden had his own car.

You have done nothing but derail this thread, feel free to discuss the picture but I’m sick of you banging on about fucking taxes, start your own thread or request a republican board you are boring some of us into a coma.

This 100%!!!

I'm happy that they did something nice and enjoyed themselves. I just think he could've picked something that didn't risk encouraging them in moral turpitude.

Oh dear jesus!!!!!

I actually read this comment and didn’t have to scroll up and read your username to know this was something you’d posted. I just knew it would be the same person that said something about death and wishing people well in the same post. I’ve not encountered you before today, so that’s saying something.

This is just such an incredibly draining way of thinking. Are you ok? I hate when people ask that to be unkind, but I do mean it sincerely.

It was calculated by the organization Republic what they claim the royals cost to each year - no one else has ever verified those figures.

She randomly talks during her songs, especially if she sees someone in trouble, she probably has a backing track for certain areas but she definitely not lip syncing the whole songs. I’m full circle from taking my DD to red and reputation to DD taking me in August

I think you misunderstood. WTF are you on about , "moral turpitude"!!?? That's frankly bonkers!

I do have children, three of them in fact, who are adults and all doing well in life. I would have been happy for them to go to a TS concert. In fact the elder two did aged 14 and 12. I think the 1950s is missing you.

Hey everyone, I'm commuting home from work and just saw this thread. Our former HOS, Trump, encouraged an uprising against our Capitol. People died. At least one person killed himself. Expensive trials are now going on about voter interference, bringing the January 6th people to justice, various Trump charges, etc. Plus we had to fix what the rioters destroyed. Lots of public money there.

When I look at my local electeds (last two mayors) I see a billion dollars wasted on ThriveNYC

https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/city-hall/story/2019/02/27/with-opaque-budget-and-elusive-metrics-850m-thrivenyc-program-attempts-a-reset-873945

Vespanest · 23/06/2024 00:06

Anyone that thinks that the money saved if the monarchy was abolished would make any difference in the short term is deluded. It would take years if not decades to sort out ownership, there would still be security costs and hefty legal fees and a chunk of compensation. Experts disagree on who owns what and times and legal laws have changed since when Greece abolished their monarchy.

BemusedAmerican · 23/06/2024 00:08

All these investigations funded by my tax dollars.
As far as I can tell, PW hasn't been accused of corruption and isn't suing anyone or in court, unlike your DOS, who is costing me money whoever he sets foot in NYC, and you because of his unending legal battles.
