Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful

In the midst of all this, I hope that anyone who reports on or speaks about the matter can refrain from calling her Kate Middleton. She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

Other than that, I sincerely pray that she and the family are offered privacy and respect that they themselves ask for, and deserve.

I think her uncle Gary called her Kate.
In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

MyopicBunny · 25/03/2024 13:12

Her family and friends and everyone who knows her personally call her Catherine.

I'm so sick of all this self-righteous crap on MN. She was always known as Kate by William as you can see in their engagement interview.

FMLWTF · 25/03/2024 13:49

She has categorically NOT always been called Catherine. I promise you. This is absurd. I’m sure she doesn’t give a fig. Why on earth are other women taking offence on her behalf? William and Harry both regularly called her Kate. Her friends at St Andrew’s definitely called her Kate. She chose to revert to Catherine for her married life as a future Queen. But there is no way she minds being called Kate.

When the press first realised she was William’s girlfriend, do you think they heard he was seeing a girl called Catherine and decided to nickname her Kate? No. That’s not what happened. They found out who she was, asked around at St Andrew’s and fellow students revealed he was seeing KATE Middleton.

MyopicBunny · 25/03/2024 13:57

The utter nonsense by some people on these threads has reached a ridiculous level of pompous hysteria. Apparently, now if you don't believe that everything in the media was put out by Kate, herself you are a misogynist. Because she is KP. Tell that to Diana, when she was Princess of Wales. What agency did she really have??

DillDanding · 25/03/2024 14:06

Her family and friends and everyone who knows her personally call her Catherine.

This is bullshit.

LighthouseTheme · 25/03/2024 14:52

The engagement was quite some time ago. Maybe preferences have changed?

Titles are temporary. I only just got used to calling her the Duchess of Cambridge. I still slip up sometimes and call them the Cambridges.

William is known as 'Willy'.

I don't really think anyone in the Royal family needs other people to be getting offended on their behalf, it's a bit childish. I remember once watching an interview with Princess Stephanie of Monaco. She was asked what she should be called and she said 'Stephanie because that's my name'.

Samcro · 25/03/2024 16:08

for some reason the princess Catherine stuff is making me itch.
even on the news the other day they called her that. she isn't princess Catherine.

I've said upthread that I don't really care what she's called (as long as it's not unpleasant like "Waity Katie" or, indeed, "Me-gain" for Meghan) on a message board, but I agree that professional reporters should get it right.
The late PoW used to get called "Princess Di/Diana" and I didn't like that either.

areyoutheregod · 25/03/2024 16:35

I don't agree its disrespectful. Do you know what is? Her disgusting Uncle giving that interview just a week ago and published in the weekend. Even if he didn't know her diagnosis, he made comments about their marriage, said Meghan wouldn't be around forever and Carole was cunning and devious. Horrible man.

TeenLifeMum · 25/03/2024 16:38

I agree @LighthouseTheme - I’ve not been called my maiden name for many years and would find it odd if I was now. The media is a weird beast.

Presumably your DH has a permanent surname that you have taken. William didn't have a surname at birth and it's difficult to keep up with whether it's Wales, Cambridge, Windsor, Mountbatten-Windsor...there's no official surname for Kate to have taken upon marriage so arguably she has never lost her maiden name

FMLWTF · 25/03/2024 18:24

She isn’t Princes Catherine, that’s true, but that’s what children want to call her and it’s harmless. The Princess of Wales is hard to explain to a little girl, as I found myself having to do this week.

LighthouseTheme · 25/03/2024 18:48

I used to read a US forum (no longer existing) - just for Below Deck. And many many of the folks on there referred to her as Princess Catherine - before she was even the Duchess of Cambridge! That's probably an American thing.
(In fact I just read a - mildly snide - article on Jezebel (again, US) - and they referred to her as Kate Middleton throughout.)

It's Catherine - not Kate.

Her family and friends and everyone who knows her personally call her Catherine.

(Meghan is the only family member I've heard referring to her as Kate, Meghan also strangely refers to the Dutches of York as Fergie, an old media nickname)

But people who love and respect her, call her Catherine.

Oh good grief what self-righteous fiction.

Rubbish. Her dad Mike calls her Kate. He took a call from her in my husband’s office one Saturday morning when he was buying something from our business. It was a normal dad/daughter conversation about the weekend arrangements.

There's a (big) difference between the terms of address used within a family and the terms used publicly and by the media. So to the public, now in 2024, the once Kate Middleton is now HRH The Princess of Wales. Her dad is still allowed to call her Kate. But I would guess that greeting her in public, he'd go with Palace advice .

Dollenganger333 · 25/03/2024 21:10

How would you know this?

AliceOlive · 25/03/2024 21:51

Privately I call people all kinds of things. Publicly I address them as they wish.

Auroradawn333 · 07/05/2025 21:20

I absolutely agree. It drives me INSANE that people still call her by her maiden name. That is beyond offensive. If people called by my maiden name it would bother me just as much. She is Princess Catherine, or Princess Kate if you must. Period.

She is actually the Princess of Wales not Princess Catherine .
