The royal family

Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful

In the midst of all this, I hope that anyone who reports on or speaks about the matter can refrain from calling her Kate Middleton. She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

Other than that, I sincerely pray that she and the family are offered privacy and respect that they themselves ask for, and deserve.

Kate Middleton is the first name we knew her by, and all the others are titles which have been shared by others.

Her husband’s family name isn’t very transparent- is it William Windsor? Cambridge? William of Wales?

Kate Middleton is a good solid name, and belongs to her regardless of the more recent temporary names she’s been given.

SpeedyDrama · 22/03/2024 19:07

Prince and Princess of Wales titles given to English people just because they’re posh seems a bit more offensive to me. They have nothing to do with Wales, it’s people, culture, language, it’s not their title to appropriate.

ladykale · 22/03/2024 19:07

@LighthouseTheme why is it a shame that it needs to be asked.

The British public are absolutely crazy. Why are people gathering outside Kensington palace releasing balloons as if people don't get cancer everyday.

Why can't people call her by her name if they want?

If someone gets an OBE or knighthood do you only refer to them by their name or with Sir?

For a country obsessed with taxing any middle earners who earn a little more than average to the death, it sure does love and idolise the most privileged country in the world.

Next she will be called "brave" for simply existing and having cancer!

I agree "princess of wales" is a very transient temporary name. She's had it for a year.
.
When I think of her, I don't think of that royal title , princess of wales, at all

You could say that a person is much more their human name

than they are a royal title anyway

There is no difference in this Kate Middleton /Duchess of York/Princess of Wales discussion, than the normal issue of some people becoming incandescent when women CHOOSE to take a different name on marriage.

Isn't CHOICE what we all want as women. Catherine, Princess of Wales CHOSE to be known as this. She did not CHOOSE to keep her former family name.

I did the exact same. I thought about it as an adult human female and made MY CHOICE. I didn't want to keep my family name as it was just plain ugly. I preferred my first husbands surname and then when I remarried CHOSE to take my new husbands surname whilst in complete control of my mental faculties. I expect people to respect MY CHOICE . IF I had chosen to keep my fathers surname (not sure how that is any less patriarchal) I would expect people to respect that choice.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 22/03/2024 19:12

Diana was a princess as soon as she married Prince Charles. Princess Catherine wasn’t a princess until the Queen died so we all got used to her being Kate Middleton

Not precisely accurate. Kate became a princess when she married William. She was Princess William, but because William was granted a royal dukedom, she used that title.

On her children's birth certificates, her occupation is listed as "Princess of the United Kingdom."

A shame you need to ask.

I don't remember Diana being called Diana Spencer during her marriage.

Edited

She never was Diana Spencer, her correct address was Lady Diana because her father was an Earl.

And I recall she frequently was referred to as Lady Di/ana in the press even after she was married.

Are you sure that Catherine had a choice ti be known as princess as wales?

I doubt it.

I doubt that she has any avenue, when charles became king to say "hey I don't want to be known as princess as wales"

It's not her making one choice like married women can make for themselves.

Kate would have to stand up to centuries of tradition, Palace officials etc

Sashamalia · 22/03/2024 19:14

I think rhat she is more Kate middleton, than she is princess of wales.

Royal titles are so old fashioned.

And that was equally disrespectful, although she did have the title itself, or A title, from birth, as a member of the British Aristocracy. (Or, as would seem to be the case sometimes, there is some level of stubbornness over following general protocol.)
It has been said that she prefers the name Catherine, so even on that basic fact, people calling her Kate are ignoring her wishes.

I didn’t know she preferred Catherine. I’ve always read Kate.

PreeningPopinjay · 22/03/2024 19:17

I like the name Kate Middleton. It suits her. I'll continue to use it.

Sashamalia · 22/03/2024 19:17

Kate middleton does suit her

CarolinaInTheMorning · 22/03/2024 19:17

He wasn't an earl when she was born. She became "Lady" Diana when her father succeeded to the earldom when she was 14 or so. Until then she was the Honourable Diana Spencer, and would have used the title "Miss."

LighthouseTheme · 22/03/2024 19:18

Newsenmum · 22/03/2024 19:16

I’m pretty sure she was!

Well, me not recalling it doesn't mean it didn't happen, so fair enough.
But there was not 24-hour news and SM in the same way "back then" - and I was certainly not following every detail of her life, so can stand partly corrected.

PreeningPopinjay · 22/03/2024 19:18

William calls her Kate, or did publicly prior to their marriage, so I'm dubious about claims that she dislikes it.

LilyofftheValley · 22/03/2024 19:18

CoatesCat · 22/03/2024 18:56

Why do you think we all have to be respectful to her?

This.

Very sad for what she is going through but respect is earned not just given through birthright or marriage.

I agree. He called her Kate in the engagement interview.

MariaLuna · 22/03/2024 19:20

She has a name, Kate Middleton, and a title, Princess of Wales.

So?

Respect of one human being to (for) another. Nothing to do with rank or status.

Maybe I am twitchy about it, as my name has been mispronounced all my life.

I didn't make any comment on whether either was disrespectful (I don't care), but you said you don't remember Diana being called by her maiden name, and I pointed out that she was (and I gave the correct name which you, disrespectfully, did not). You now do seem to recall it and say it was disrespectful. Make your mind up - you either remember that it happened or you don't.

But either way, it did. So your comment that it didn't is simply wrong.

HebburnPokemon · 22/03/2024 19:22

She’s both?

Cockapoopoopoo · 22/03/2024 19:22

Absolute fucking nutters coming out of the woodwork over this Kate stuff. Embarrassing
