The royal family

Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful

In the midst of all this, I hope that anyone who reports on or speaks about the matter can refrain from calling her Kate Middleton. She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

Other than that, I sincerely pray that she and the family are offered privacy and respect that they themselves ask for, and deserve.

It’s better than ‘her’

MrsVino · 22/03/2024 18:43

Yeah. Agree. Really really annoys me. She hasn’t been Kate Middleton since 2011.

Roselilly36 · 22/03/2024 18:45

Why is it considered disrespectful to call a woman by her family name?

A shame you need to ask.

I don't remember Diana being called Diana Spencer during her marriage.

Maybe Rishi Sunak could do something about thatHmm

cathyandclaire · 22/03/2024 18:50

I think Diana was often called Lady Di, even after marriage.

Was about to say the same, and even to this day.

She was referred to as Lady Di well beyond her marriage though! Or Princess Di, which was also technically incorrect.

But there was no Internet back then. The reason the media still write about “Kate Middleton” is because of SEO. They know that’s what people are typing into Google and that’s what they have to put in their headlines if they want their articles to be read.

Diana was a princess as soon as she married Prince Charles. Princess Catherine wasn’t a princess until the Queen died so we all got used to her being Kate Middleton

Sashamalia · 22/03/2024 18:55

There is nothing shameful about a woman's original name.

It will always be part of her.

She is kate middleton, and POW

TinkerTiger · 22/03/2024 18:55

She has an identity outside of being a Princess. Kate Middleton is perfectly fine. Stop making it about you and how you feel and find a grip.

CoatesCat · 22/03/2024 18:56

Why do you think we all have to be respectful to her?

Who's this "we"?
I never did - and it has always irked me when she is referred to as Kate Middleton, or - almost worse - (and esp. the DM) - there is no consistency. Mind you, that rag always seems like and adult comic written by the chimps who haven't got to Shakespeare yet.

How awful to have your name reported based on SEO.

OP posts:
TinkerTiger · 22/03/2024 18:58

@LighthouseTheme it's not about you.

Sashamalia · 22/03/2024 18:58

Kate has had a couple of title changes

I keel thinking of her as the duchess of Cambridge, I forget she is pow now.

Kate middleton is how a lot of people think of her

DillDanding · 22/03/2024 18:58

Don’t be daft.

And a shame this needs to be asked as well (and NO, I am not a forelock-tugging peasant).

Correct. It most definitely is not.

But you're making it about you and your feelings. It's unhinged.

CoatesCat · 22/03/2024 19:01

But shes just a person?. The fact she has a cancer diagnosis is sad because shes a person and a mother of young children. Calling her a princess or kate middleton doesnt make a difference to that.

YankSplaining · 22/03/2024 19:01

When someone gets famous, people tend to remember them by the name they had when they first became famous. If her last name had changed at marriage to something else, everyone might have switched to “Kate Jones” or whatever, but we had roughly a decade to get used to her as Kate Middleton.

In the US, I don’t think we ever quite understand what we were “supposed” to call her. Especially after the Queen died and Kate became Princess of Wales - was what we called her supposed to switch now? Also seemed sort of la-dee-dah that Kate was okay for a decade, but now, how dare you! It’s Catherine, you peasant.

DillDanding · 22/03/2024 19:02

They’re calling her Kate on the national news right now. Are you offended by that, OP? Or is it the Middleton bit?

LighthouseTheme · 22/03/2024 19:02

TinkerTiger · 22/03/2024 19:01

But you're making it about you and your feelings. It's unhinged.

Huh?
It's an opinion.

Which is what makes up most or what goes on on Mumsnet.

Be careful with calling someone unhinged though. It makes YOU sound weird.

That is quite literally how SEO works. Best have a word with all the internet users of the world furiously typing “Kate Middleton” into their search engines at this very minute.
