Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful

In the midst of all this, I hope that anyone who reports on or speaks about the matter can refrain from calling her Kate Middleton. She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

Other than that, I sincerely pray that she and the family are offered privacy and respect that they themselves ask for, and deserve.

Everyone spent the 90s saying Sarah Ferguson and Lady Diana Spencer. Calling them by their family names isn’t new.

EmilyPlay · 22/03/2024 19:24

I'm pretty sure she doesn't give a fuck at the minute. Or ever really. So stop being obsessive, OP. She won't invite you to the palace.

jellytotsparkles · 22/03/2024 19:24

As far as I’m aware her actual name with title is currently……. Catherine, The Princess of Wales. She prefers to be called Catherine since it is her actual name & Kate is her nickname I believe.

In most of their official announcements she is also referenced as Catherine usually as opposed to Kate & I think it’s about time the media and public moved toward calling her by her preferred name & title.

Respect of one human being to (for) another. Nothing to do with rank or status.

Maybe I am twitchy about it, as my name has been mispronounced all my life.

But her name is still Kate, or Catherine. She signs off her Insta account with Catherine.

But you haven't answered the question as to why we have to respect her (beyond the same respect we'd give any human being)

She never was Diana Spencer, her correct address was Lady Diana because her father was an Earl.

He wasn't an earl when she was born. She became "Lady" Diana when her father succeeded to the earldom when she was 14 or so. Until then she was the Honourable Diana Spencer, and would have used the title "Miss."

Yes, sorry, I meant always from when she was in the public eye/news.

The idea that everyone is disrespectful to Kate and we're all fawning over others is weird.

Meghan, Fergie, Sophie......nearly all called by their names in most cases.

Crabble · 22/03/2024 19:25

What a perfectly ridiculous thread.

Of all of the ills that have fallen upon Kate Middleton over the past week, people calling her by her name is not among them.

ConJob · 22/03/2024 19:27

Isn't it about time that a woman being referred to by her own name rather than her husband's isn't seen as disrespectful?

To be honest I think that's the least of her worries right now.

Sashamalia · 22/03/2024 19:28

Her family name is important too

Yeah, I’m not understanding the “disrespectful” thing tbh.

LiterallyOnFire · 22/03/2024 19:36

Diana was a princess as soon as she married Prince Charles. Princess Catherine wasn’t a princess until the Queen died so we all got used to her being Kate Middleton

There is no such person as Princess Catherine. "Kate Middleton" is an infinitely more legitimate way to refer to her than "Princess Catherine".

In England and wales, adopting a spouse's name on marriage does not mean you've forsaken or relinquished your own name.

Calling a Princess of Wales (one who came on the title via marriage anyway) "Princess first name" is some made-up fairytale nonsense.

Hear bloody hear.

The chorus of dowager matrons bleating on about birth names being "disrespectful" is so embarrassing. It's 2024.

"Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful"

Are you for real? 😄😄😄😄😄

I sincerely hope I never become so boring that something like this would upset me. She is Kate Middleton 🤷 or K midi as we call her

ColleenDonaghy · 22/03/2024 19:39

I don't use any of their titles, it just doesn't sit right. Kate isn't an unusual enough name to make it clear by itself who I mean, so if it's not clear from context I use Kate Middleton. If she had a married surname I'd probably be using that by now but she doesn't. Likewise if she was Princess Kate I'd probably come round to that eventually even though Princess is a bit urgh.

Roselilly36 · 22/03/2024 18:45

Why is it considered disrespectful to call a woman by her family name?

It's disrespectful to anyone who chose to change their name for any reason surely

GingerScallop · 22/03/2024 19:40

LighthouseTheme · 22/03/2024 18:46

A shame you need to ask.

I don't remember Diana being called Diana Spencer during her marriage.

Edited

things have been changing for women. their family names are equally as good as their married names and titles

SabreIsMyFave · 22/03/2024 19:41

I am a huge fan of the Royals, and am very fond of Kate, but I do think you need to get out more @LighthouseTheme It's really not that bad that people still call her Kate Middleton.

What do you call her??? Do let us know so we can feign disgust and disdain at your preferred name for her. Wink

musthorse · 22/03/2024 19:41

In many countries women are still known by their maiden names after marriage.

LighthouseTheme · 22/03/2024 18:57

Who's this "we"?
I never did - and it has always irked me when she is referred to as Kate Middleton, or - almost worse - (and esp. the DM) - there is no consistency. Mind you, that rag always seems like and adult comic written by the chimps who haven't got to Shakespeare yet.

How awful to have your name reported based on SEO.

She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

If you don’t like being lumped with others then why are you trying to enforce what people can say?

SnowFrogJelly · 22/03/2024 19:44

It's her name!
Not disrespectful at all

I'm pretty sure most people calling her Kate Middleton aren't doing it for feminist reasons.

You're Irish aren't you? (Saw you making a lot of sense on the "aitch", thread.)

That in itself is a good point. Why should anyone from Ireland, France - or any country that doesn't have our royals as theirs - have to go along with this title folderol?

I don't care much for the titles, either and I'm English. As long as everyone knows who we mean, what's the problem?

CassandraWebb · 22/03/2024 19:50

Was it ok before today? I mean she was clearly seriously and devastatingly I'll whatever the condition in January.
