The royal family

Calling her Kate Middleton seems so disrespectful

In the midst of all this, I hope that anyone who reports on or speaks about the matter can refrain from calling her Kate Middleton. She is the Princess of Wales, and that's that.

Other than that, I sincerely pray that she and the family are offered privacy and respect that they themselves ask for, and deserve.

Seems like it, eh?

@musthorse is correct - in Scotland your birth name is your legal name for life, unless you're adopted or change it by deed poll. If you choose to take your husband's name on marriage it's a courtesy name only.

I don't think Kate Middleton had any choice though, as the monarchy is notoriously stuffy and old-fashioned in these matters.

I’m English living in Scotland and I didn’t know this. Thank you.

honeylulu · 22/03/2024 21:51

When people say Princess of Wales I still think of Diana and I expect thanks true for many other people. Kate Middleton may not bestow her correct title but everyone knows who is being referred to.

She doesn't have a married surname as far as I'm aware. Prince William has never gone by the "house" name of Mountbatten-Windsor so Kate Mountbatten-Windsor would be similarly confusing.

I certainly don't think it's disrespectful to refer to her by her birth surname. How insulting to her family to suggest their surname is unworthy of respect! I use my birth surname still (married 23 years) and I don't feel the least bit ashamed of it.

@LighthouseTheme Princess Diana was called "Lady Di" for years after she married Charles. Up to her death by some people.

I always think of this line from 'Whatever Love Means' by David Baddiel when we call Kate Middleton "Kate Middleton". It's not disrespectful, it's just ingrained for a lot of us to call her by what she was called when we first heard of her. Especially, I think, because they've pushed the name "Catherine" since she was married, which isn't the same name she was first introduced to us as.

That is one of my favourite books! I found it in a remainder bookshop when it came out and fictionalising that time still makes me feel a bit odd, for some reason. I’ve never met anyone else who’s read it!

Was about to say the same, and even to this day.

And that makes it right, how?

Her name is Katherine Windsor.

With a K? I don’t think so.

Her name is Katherine Windsor.

Not according to official documents. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23552087

And seeing as her first name is spelt Catherine you haven't even got that bit right.

Prince George's birth officially registered

The Duke and and Duchess of Cambridge formally register the birth of their son, Prince George.

I remember her as being Catherine at first, and only known to us as Kate much later. Like the OP, I hate to hear her referred to as Kate Middleton, because she no longer is - she hasn't been that since she got married and her name became something else. Nothing to do with being ashamed of it. For example, no-one calls Alan Sugar that anymore - it's always Lord Sugar. Same with Sir Elton John - people always use the Sir. So it's only respectful to call her by her title rather than her maiden name.

@OooScotland I lost my first copy in the early noughties after lending it to so many people, I loved it that much. I've only reread it probably four times in 25yrs but it's also one of my favourite books. All of his novels are marvellous; Time for Bed, his very first one is quite different but laugh-out-loud hilarious and The Secret Purposes is different again. But they're all good.

I've also never met anyone who'd read it that I hadn't lent my copy to, so it's lovely to sort of meet you. I remember the cover being what made me buy it- it was so weird. I was 14 and reading it at the dinner table I was so hooked, I remember my Grandad was the first person I gave it to afterwards because he said if it was that good I couldn't put it down to eat, he wanted to read it!

I've got it too. Isn't the cover very plain with just an outline of her doe eyes? Time for Bed is very funny, with his mother and her, "What I like to call..." and isn't someone obsessed with the Hindenberg? But lots of mentions of anal sex iirc?!

Lovely to ‘meet’ you too! Thank you for reminding me about his other books - off to look them up.

25 years ago, is it really? It was the cover that drew me in too. It was in a basket on the pavement outside the bookshop. I recognised those eyes on that strange yellow background and had to pick it up. When I saw the title and remembered that chilling engagement interview I knew it was going to be good.

Why? It is only disrespectful if she absolutely hates her father's name and I don't get that impression at all. After all, when you marry, you sign the certificate in your own birth name not that of your husband!

Candyfloss99 · 22/03/2024 22:31

There is absolutely nothing disrespectful about calling a woman by their actual name.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 22/03/2024 22:38

Well it's either KM or referring to her by the titles or names she has because she married into the Royal family.

Plenty of women choose to keep their name when they marry now rather than going by their husbands, obviously she doesn't get a choice marrying into royalty but I can't see why it's offensive being called her actual name rather than some title or name forced on her because of who she married

How many people called David Beckham's wife Victoria Adams?

LighthouseTheme · 22/03/2024 22:54

I specifically did not mention her illness/announcement becuase that was being tirelessly discussed. It is OF COURSE the prime concern in her life.
My exasperation over her name is more with the media, although there seem to plenty of MN users who want to take offence. Nothing new there.

@Pocketfullofdogtreats - I think you are i a minority in agreeing with me - doesn't make us wrong though.

Whoever said "we can't be expected to type out Princess of Wales" - really?
(PoW is just wrong; it's not about laziness.)

Big difference being we know what her name is. It's Victoria Beckham. The PoW may well still be Kate Middleton. She might be Kate Windsor. Or Mountbatten-Windsor. Or Kate Wales. I don't know what her name is. Her titles are not her name.

Her title is HRH The Princess of Wales. Her name is Catherine.

Never heard anyone call Alan Sugar Lord Sugar, or Elton John Sir. Titles are such a nonsense, and very negative towards women. Why should we be designated according to our our husbands or lack thereof? Calling everyone just by their own name is showing equal respect to all.

That's one of her titles, yes. Do she doesn't have a surname at all now? Given that everyone knows Kate is short for Catherine and nobody seems to know if she has a surname at all anymore and if what it is then using her last known surname seems perfectly reasonable. Not all of us are particularly interested in using titles.

Shall we call her MIL Camilla Parker-Bowles, then?
