I saw the papers in a shop today and was surprised that was the main headline for some. You wouldn't think that would be the main news.

The event was years ago, but this is the first we've heard of the Queen's reaction - if indeed it was her reaction.

I think historic matters (in the sense of things from the past that only come to light later) are worthy of attention.

But I'm really not too sure how much reliance we can place on the sourcing of this. Trouble is that, like the Rose Hanbury rumours that have been thoroughly disavowed by the originator, once "out there" rumours that people want to believe will probably never quite go away.

A new biography about Charles, then.

Are we to assume that the absence of legal action or palace statements implies a royal endorsement of this new book?

Anyway to quote others, it seems rather vulgar to air laundry like this. It's trivial, to such an extent that you have to wonder about the purpose of sharing such information, especially as it concerns a very young child and a deceased person. As always the sources are anonymous. Sigh. How sad that our head of state operates like this.

I do remember thinking at the time that I was surprised The Queen approved of using the pet name like that.

I'd assumed naming a child after their great grandmother would have been discussed though 😆

Why is it rude? I would be delighted if a relative gave their child a diminutive of my name? I can't see the queen being bothered really.

Because it's polite to ask someone if you plan to name a child after them, my mother asked my grandmother and she said don't, I consequently have a different name to the one they originally chose

H and M claimed the Queen was “ supportive” which I always thought was a strange word to use in that context . When my DD said they were giving one of my DGDs my first name as a middle name, I was thrilled and honoured . Not sure I would have said yes, I support that !

What is completely fascinating really is that when the Duke of Sussex won his phone hacking case against Mirror Group Newspapers, the Daily Mail buried it as far down the headlines as they could. Yet this is the main story today. They obviously know their target audience.

No it's not the earliest report about this. I can remember reading a similar report at the time. It stated that Harry rang the Queen and TOLD her they would be naming their baby after her but apparently she was not asked but told and she originally thought they meant to call her Elizabeth and was shocked when they announced the name as Lillibet.

If they were calling her Elizabeth or Lizzie or something I don’t think it would matter, but it was so personal - Harry himself wasn’t on “Lilibet” terms with the Queen! Plus them not being on good terms made it seem very cynical.

The Daily Mail have reported on this being put in Hardman's new book.
