When I first read that the Harkles had named their child Lilibet I did have an instinctive sense of cringe. I can't explain why, but it felt wrong.

@MerryMarigold

Because it's polite to ask someone if you plan to name a child after them, my mother asked my grandmother and she said don't, I consequently have a different name to the one they originally chose

I'm going to disagree with you there, I'll call my dc what I want to call them. I've made them, i get to name them

Ohwhatadag · 15/01/2024 16:38

Isn't this one of those situations in life where no-one is right?

Of course, M and H shouldn't have used a highly personal nickname for their child (although I can imagine them thinking it would be a lovely surprise compliment to the grandmother - without thinking it through).

And on the other hand, the Queen may have owned a lot but it's only a name.

The fact that it was such (supposedly) a huge thing shows how bad communication and/or feelings were between them.

I reckon it shows that the Queen was sick of them by then. Or that the Queen wasn't a loveable old lady, but a bit of a pain in arse herself. We will never know. Why it drives certain people mad.

thefallen · 15/01/2024 16:39

It did feel a very personal and private name to be choosing, and not a choice the Queen herself would have made. A bit of 'we're using a nickname to show how close and intimate we are with her'.

FuckBalledTwattyPiss · 15/01/2024 16:39

Well, she didn't have a monopoly on the name and the couple weren't even living in the UK at the time.

I have heard of people discussing name choices with relatives, but asking, as in asking for permission? That's weird. Nobody owns a name. Naming a child is so personal, I can't imagine a relative forbidding another from using a name. How bizarre.

Noseyoldcow · 15/01/2024 16:41

Poor kid. Lillibet Diana with all that history behind it. And the Princess title as well.
I know your parents eff you up, don't they, but most parents try not to. But along with picture of Granny Diana in the nursery that they all talk to, this kid is going to need therapy.......or will the kerching be enough?

If you intend it as a loving tribute though you’re hardly going to go “I’ll name my kid whatever I please, you don’t own a name”

Bibbidybobbidyroo · 15/01/2024 16:42

Anything to deflect from the raging allegations going on in their own house, no?

Leave them alone for chrissakes. Bigger fish to fry within that bloody family.

Samcro · 15/01/2024 16:03

good grief. wasn't that years ago

2 and a bit?
Don't think Lili's had her 3rd birthday yet, but I could be wrong.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 15/01/2024 16:42

She didn't have the monopoly on the name, when she was the only person to have ever been called it, and it was based on her own childhood difficulty saying her name.

Maybe someone should tell the BBC they are the new DM. They reported back in June 2021 that the Queen had not given permission. The Sussexes threatened them with libel. The article is still there.

Comedycook · 15/01/2024 16:44

I'd always assumed that the Queen would have been upset by them using that name.

GlitchStitch · 15/01/2024 16:44

Let's be honest, they didn't name her this so that people wouldn't talk about it so it's bizarre when people appear to get defensive of them being discussed. I felt it was tacky at the time, it was known to be a personal pet name that Philip called her. To me it was along the same lines as when Harry talked about how he was "making sure the Queen was protected" or whatever. It was trying to imply extra close links to her when frankly that didn't seem to be the case at all.

HobnobsChoice · 15/01/2024 16:45

Perhaps the Queen applied the Mumsnet test of can you imagine a Barrister or politician or Doctor called this first name and felt they should have given her a "traditional" name

AfterTheSummer · 15/01/2024 16:47

Given Harry's ongoing court case with the Mail, I wouldn't put any weight whatsoever on anything they say that relates to him, especially unattributed quotes. I'm not a Harry fan especially but it's pretty obvious that the tabs are deliberately targeting him with negative stories as part of an attempt to intimidate him into pulling back.

“We’re estranged from our in-laws but planning on naming DD after a highly personal nickname of Nanna’s (whose life we’ve made a living hell) that only 4 people were ever close enough to use, 3 are now dead and 0 are us, oh we’ve already trademarked the name and had commemorative teacosies printed” would be a YABU

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/01/2024 16:51

The DM are merely quoting from the new book by Robert Hardnan.

Fulshaw · 15/01/2024 16:52

Mylovelygreendress · 15/01/2024 16:28

The DM is printing excerpts from Robert Hardman’s new book .

Right. So it’s not even their own ‘source’ but in fact third hand information yet they have still chosen to put it on the front page of their newspaper.

EncantoSpice · 15/01/2024 16:53

Fulshaw · 15/01/2024 16:52

They’re serialising his new book, it’s a fairly standard practice. Not just something the Daily Mail do and not a practice that has been invented for Meghan and Harry. I promise this is not a conspiracy.

MaturingCheeseball · 15/01/2024 16:54

i don’t think for one second would I have called a child after the head of a family I had trashed and claimed I had escaped from to find freedom.

Sadly I think it was, if not a commercial move (the name was domained/trademarked ahead of the birth and before telling the Queen) then definitely a way to maintain a “royal relevance”.

Why two “Harry” names, anyway? No Doria, Meghan or any family names from Doria’s side?

letsbepositive2024 · 15/01/2024 16:54

Fulshaw · 15/01/2024 16:12

Ah, The Daily Mail. So reliable and truthful and unbiased in its reporting of people who are bringing extremely damaging lawsuits against them.

Exactly

GlitchStitch · 15/01/2024 16:56

It's not a false story that they called her Lilibet though is it! Rather than jumping to criticise the source I'm interested in what those defending them think of the original decision. Do you think it was a lovely tribute or tone deaf and disrespectful?

MaturingCheeseball · 15/01/2024 17:00

Supporters usually snap “they can name her what they like” as if it were any old name. Or they claim that Harry was especially close to the Queen.

The fact of the family row is waved away as is the domain registering and presenting the Queen with a fait accompli.

Samcro · 15/01/2024 17:00

What is concerning is that the unnamed aide! Says that was the angriest he had seen her.
so paying out millions to a victim, didn’t make her as angry
good thing is bull shit

LlynTegid · 15/01/2024 17:00

It is pure speculation as to what the late Queen thought. I assume the Paper that Supported the Blackshirts would have preferred Diana, after the wife of Oswald Mosley.
