I heard it reported on TV this morning. I thought they were saying the Queen was annoyed that they said they asked her permission not that she was annoyed about the name. I haven't read it though so I might have misunderstood or they misreported it.

Did they really trademark the Queens nickname?

They bought the domain names ‘www.lilibetdiana.com’ and ‘www.lilidiana.com’ to prevent other people using them.

Something Buckingham Palace has been routinely doing since around 2014 for royal names. Source: The Telegraph

Also trademarked but again, standard practice for royals and other high profile people, to prevent other people using the name for profit.

mamma65432 · 15/01/2024 17:20

It wasn't just Philip and Margaret who called her that, it was also her cousins and her nanny.

Maireas · 15/01/2024 17:20

No, I think you're right, @Iwasafool - it was about them threatening to sue the BBC over the incident. Not the name itself.

That article doesn’t say that the Queen was furious about the name choice. It says she was angry that they went to the press to say that the Queen had been supportive etc. Whatever the Queen’s reaction, it was in a private conversation, which Harry and Meghan then told to the press. Most of the family’s anger seems to be about private conversations being made public. That articles says the same; that the Queen was angry that her reaction in a private conversation was made public, and possibly also that she wasn’t hugely supportive but didn’t say no and it was told to the press with a different spin.

Sorry, I missed this before I posted but this is what I understood.

RiderofRohan · 15/01/2024 17:20

Lilibet is a lovely name. And I doubt the pushing 100 year old queen lost much sleep over it.

Globe22 · 15/01/2024 17:21

Nobody owns a name, not even a Queen!

CurlewKate · 15/01/2024 17:21

The Daily Mail. I seem to remember they were the paper that ran the story about Megan trying to poison Princess Charlotte by having Lily of the Valley in her bridesmaids posies.....

“We’re estranged from our in-laws but planning on naming DD after a highly personal nickname of Nanna’s (whose life we’ve made a living hell) that only 4 people were ever close enough to use, 3 are now dead and 0 are us, oh we’ve already trademarked the name and had commemorative teacosies printed” would be a YABU

Quite.

Desperately crass of them, and clearly not intended as a 'loving tribute'.

Rosejasmine · 15/01/2024 17:22

This is in The Daily Mail you know…

And being reported in other papers .

Personally, i would find it REALLY bizarre if my GRANDKIDS called me by my nickname, as not, you know, grandma. Or whatever grandma term was preferred in the family.

Her children probably didnt call her that, because they called her mother/mom/mommy.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/01/2024 17:27

Nothing to see here, just The Heil stirring up more hatred as per usual.

They called 'Archie' something completely different

Did they though? I found the article, apparently Prince George was calling himself Archie back in January 2019. A bit like how Prince William used to call himself Steve it seems!

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6636903/amp/Im-called-Archie-Playful-Prince-George-reveals-nickname-stunned-dogwalker.html

That's a security measure, isn't it?

TheOnlyOneInTheMNVillage · 15/01/2024 17:27

This is truly the stupidest shit I’ve ever read.

If it’s true, I think a lot less of the Queen for getting her knickers in a twist over it. It’s a fucking name for a baby.

If the Sussexes tried to get the palace to agree with the fact the Queen had given them pher blessing when she apparently hadn’t then they’re daft too. They didn’t need bloody permission, it’s a name, it’s a nice gesture, they didn’t need to give any kind of explanation for it and say they asked permission. All they had to say was ‘we did this thing and we’re happy with our choice’. My DC has the same name as my relative, I didn’t ask their permission I named them that and told them it was in honour of them and they were overjoyed.

This whole thing has gotten out of control and is just embarrassing now for all parties involved.

bombardelli · 15/01/2024 17:28

Sounds like a load of lies. Lilibet is quite an old fashioned name, only people with a deep connection to the name are likely to choose it and with Harry being the late Queen’s favourite, it’s likely he did it with her blessing.

The couple even ordered their aggressive firm of lawyers, Schillings, to write to news broadcasters and publishers - most notably the BBC - saying claims she was not asked for permission were false and defamatory and should not be repeated.

Good on them. It seems the press hate anyone being as aggressive as them.

GrazingSheep · 15/01/2024 17:28

@MaturingCheeseball
Why two “Harry” names, anyway? No Doria, Meghan or any family names from Doria’s side?

You could say the same about Charlotte. 3 ‘William’ names.

That’s you though. My DC call my parents by shortened versions of their actual names. Because that’s what my parents wanted. Everyone involved is happy.

What works for one doesn’t work for all. You don’t like it, others will.

Dead cat to distract from the stuff which came out last week about P Andrew.

They're going to have to have more than one dead cat: the Prince Andrew stuff is going to run like The Mousetrap.

As for naming histrionics, who cares? Don't we already get enough posts on name reserving here without adding more?

Sunnysideupagain · 15/01/2024 17:30

I can’t see an elderly woman getting in a lather at this. Am sure the Queen had her foibles like anyone else, but she seems too level headed to ‘be angry’ about this.

I can see her rolling her eyes at the news and going back to watching the TV.

topnoddy · 15/01/2024 17:30

A it's The Daily Mail
B Who **ing cares

therealcookiemonster · 15/01/2024 17:30

finally, some proper journalism. keeping evil meghan in check. other newspapers distracting people with bullshit stories on goings on in foreign lands when the real problem in this country has always been... pesky women marrying into the royal family and messing things up.

Mikimoto · 15/01/2024 17:32

Which would you prefer, Queenie: to have a grandkid with a quirky name a bit like yours, or to have a son shacking up with the Epsteins?
