In order to honour Edward’s 59th birthday

Yes just saw that. Shame he wasn’t 60 this birthday. 59 seems a bit odd but I suppose it’s to get it done before the coronation 😂

Ineedwinenow · 10/03/2023 09:14

Congratulations to the new Duke! Well deserved and nicely timed KC! 😉

Whatthediddlyfeck · 10/03/2023 09:14

I’m glad this is happening, especially as there was talk that it wouldn’t.

Clioma · 10/03/2023 09:21

It was the Queen's gift to Edward when he married, ie that he become Duke of Edinburgh once both Prince Philip and she were no longer with us. I'm glad that Charles has respected his mother's wishes.

Moonicorn · 10/03/2023 09:22

I read that as Andrew for a moment 🤦🏼‍♀️ ah well, rich royal gets title, so what

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 10/03/2023 09:23

That's good news. My ds is on the DoE scheme, so it's good that there is a face to the title again.

Mumsnut · 10/03/2023 09:24

I’m pleased about this. Edward has been the ultimate ‘spare’ - was an Earl for years when Andrew was a Duke, accepted HMQ and Charles” request that his children not use the title prince / Princess , quietly got on with things.

Mumsnut · 10/03/2023 09:26

It will revert back to the crown in Edward’s death, however

GasPanic · 10/03/2023 09:26

There was talk I think of him not getting it, which would not really have been very fair to me.

I think he is doing good work atm with Sophie and deserves the title.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 10/03/2023 09:27

Perfect choice

I thought that as well Grin

Congratulations to the new Duke! Well deserved and nicely timed KC!

i know this is the Royal board and all but what does this mean? Congratulations? what did he do to deserve it apart from be born into the right family?

I mean, it is no skin off my nose what any of them call themselves, or medals and shiny orders they award each other. But why does any of it matter to anyone else? (just trying to get my head round it)

Wasn’t he given an Earldom precisely because the Queen wanted him to have the title Duke of Edinburgh after his father’s death?

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 10/03/2023 09:29

I posted this on another thread, but it’s far more fitting here - I don’t know why there’s been so much speculation over the DofE title.

They tend not to do many big things, other than securing the direct line, in a short space of time after the death of the monarch.

He was never going to make Edward DofE right away. It was always going to be on an occasion after a decent amount of time had passed.

It is, however, interesting that it’s a lifetime title. So won’t pass to James and therefore, unlikely the Kent and Gloucester titles, won’t become a non royal dukedom. I think that will become more common with titles going forward and is certainly more fitting with how E & S have brought their children up.

PacificallyRequested · 10/03/2023 09:30

Wow. I really didn't think this would happen. Interesting that it is no longer hereditary.

JenniferBarkley · 10/03/2023 09:35

Ah lovely, I'm glad it did go ahead.

Hopefully the choice for it to not pass to James was made by Edward and Sophie, which is a sensible one.

Yes, I think the title reverting to the Crown on Edward’s death is a clear message about a slimmed-down monarchy. People love to complain about the “hangers-on” (the Kents and the Gloucesters etc.) - this avoids creating an additional official branch of the Royal family. If James and Louise have children, they can be plain old Master or Miss Windsor/Severn.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 10/03/2023 09:39

The Wessex title is still one that passes on.

It’ll in fact be interesting to see if James stays as VS or begins to use that now.

LadyEloise1 · 10/03/2023 09:42

Why was Andrew a Duke and Edward an Earl for so long ?

Me too. He deserves it.

Why was Andrew a Duke and Edward an Earl for so long ?

Because of this plan for him to be Duke of Edinburgh.

LadyEloise1 · 10/03/2023 09:45

Ah !
Thank you @YetMoreNewBeginnings.

He's chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and heavily involved in that.

LadyEloise1 · 10/03/2023 09:48

If a Marquess is a higher ranking than an Earl how come Edward wasn't the Marquess of X.
Why was he two ranks down from Andrew ?

Ceryneianhind · 10/03/2023 09:48

Why didn't the queen make him doe though? Pp died in June 2021
