In order to honour Edward’s 59th birthday

There was a Prince John, younger brother to Edward V111 who died very young. Had a sad life IIRC.

Yes.

Sealed away from public view because he was regarded as too shameful to be seen 😡

See Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon if you want to get bang up to date 😡

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 21:56

I'm not sure the RF can be blamed for the choices of the Bowes-Lyon family

The Bowes Lyon sisters was an absolute disgrace. Don't get me started on that one @CathyorClaire

And it was in all our lifetimes.

Nerissa Bowes-Lyon born 1919.
Katherine Bowes-Lyon born 1926

Yes, today they would have been treated very differently. Sadly a very different view a century ago

I worked with people with learning disabilities in the 1990s. The older ones (over about 35) had often been abandoned by their families. One, in his 40s, had been born into an 'asylum' and grown up there. Who knows what he could have achieved if given a 'normal' family upbringing and an education like any 'normal' child?

It was very sad

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:05

But as @CathyorClaire and @Roussette say, bang up to date 😂

FredandAmy · 10/03/2023 22:06

Very well deserved. I like Edward and Sophie, and their lovely DC. I hope we see more of Louise at the coronation, she seems very down-to-earth and another talented horse rider.

Relative born in the 1940’s. Never lived at home once they realised ‘she wasn’t normal’. Think about 3 years old. Their words not mine. I’m glad things are different now but the RF didn’t do much different to most people.

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:12

But the 1910s/1920s are bang up to date 😂

It was so common at the time.

My Nana worked for many years in children’s home - it was basically a home-turned-hospital for children with disabilities and ill health. I remember having a toy clear out when I was 8 or 9 because one of the “disruptive” children had damaged a bundle of toys and there was no money for new ones so the staffs children’s toys all got raided.

It was just the way things were done then. Very sad and thankfully changed.

No, no ,no!

@CathyorClaire and @Roussette are telling us how terrible the RF are, today, for attitudes of the past...

One of the Bowes-Lyons only died in 2014. After being hidden away.

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:20

And being known by the wider family, despite how 'shameful'?

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:22

And listed in Burke's peerage, by their parents, as dying in the 1940s?

Roussette · 10/03/2023 22:22

That's less than 10 years ago by the way. After being erased from the RF. Never acknowledged.

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:24

How/why would the RF be responsible for knowing about relatives in the Bowes-Lyon family recorded as dying in the 1940s?

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:24

And where should the RF record them?

KrasiTime · 10/03/2023 22:26

They weren’t royal were they? Or have I missed something?

saffy9876 · 10/03/2023 22:26

They were the nieces of the Queen Mother - her brothers children.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/03/2023 22:27

I had never heard of the Bowes Lyons girls. Seems they had other cousins on the institution as well.

It is sad that relatives such as their aunt, the Queen Mother, never visited them.

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 22:27

No, they were nieces of the QM, born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

But don't let you be put off from attributing anything to the RF if it discredits them!

It is sad that all too many children were abandoned (with the encouragement of medical professionals) due to disabilities.

I worked with many in the 1990s.

They knew about them.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/03/2023 22:30

As for Prince John... it sounds like he was looked after on family property. If he was severely ill it wouldn't have been in his best interests to be public

They were the Queen's cousins!
